Purposefully held over to take full advantage of next generation PC graphics cards and the new consoles, this latest sequel in the Unreal Tournament series is looking to set new standards for multiplayer first person shoot `em-ups. Considering developer Epic Games' Unreal graphics technology is used by so many other companies you always know a new Unreal Tournament game is going to look good. There's tons of new features beyond just eye candy here though, including a whole new game mode called Warfare, which works like a combination of the existing Assault and Onslaught modes, with more involved mission goals that make team play absolutely essential to success.

As you'd expect there's a hanger full of new vehicles and weapons including some nifty hoverboards for when you're just on-foot and a number of new robot mechs for you to drive; all with varying numbers of legs including tripods and four-legged walkers. The enormous Leviathan tank is particularly impressive, with four independently manned turrets and a giant energy weapon.

Considerable work has also gone into providing the game with a decent single player mode, never one of the series' highlights, with newly improved artificial intelligence that allows you to simulate a multiplayer game properly even when you're playing on your own. User created modifications (mods) will also continue to play a hugely important part in the game's success with the game shipping with a new version of the Unreal Editor for both PCs and consoles. After a quiet 2006, it seems like 2007 is going to be the best year ever for PC gamers.

5 out of 5 stars Great on a good gaming rig, but beware of running on slow hardware   November 27, 2007
 6 out of 7 found this review helpful

UT3 plays much like the previous versions of the game; it is a twitch-shooter.

This means gameplay is fast and furious, with the best strategy being to run and gun (at least, in deathmatch). This is at odds with many other games out there, notably Quake Enemy Territory. The latter is a more thoughtful and strategic game.

Whether you choose one over the other may be dependant on which sort of game you prefer, but for me, neither is better than the other; too much of either becomes boring, but a little of everything is the spice of life.

On to gameplay; Not much to say on this: If you liked UT 2004, but feel that it looks a little old, you'll love UT3.

Graphics and engine: The big thing that UT3 brings to the table is graphics. The game is beautiful on a good system. On the other hand, it can look worse than UT2004 on a low end system.

On my desktop (2.4Ghz Q6600 quad core, 2Gb Heavily overclocked Radeon 1950 pro 512Mb) it looks and feels great. On my laptop 1.8Ghz Core 2, "gb, NVidia 6600 256Mb it looks like a different game - slow and jerky at a decent resolution or low texture and pixelated on a low resolution.

Looking at the resources whilst the game is running, it is obvious that UT3 is a real resource hog; it needs not only a competent graphics card, but also a fast processor; UT3 uses about double the processing power than even Crysis (50 to 60% of the quad core for UT3, compared to a constant 35% for Crysis). Its fair to say that UT3 is unplayable on a slow system - twitch shooters just can't be played on a system with low fps or indistinct/pixilated opponents. For those with systems closer to my laptop spec, it might be worth going for quake ET (or even Call of duty 4, which is particularly fast on a low end system whilst still managing to look really good); that runs well on slower systems and manages to look much better, but UT3 blows it away in terms of graphics and physics on a high end system.

Too end, its worth mentioning one thing that the UT series has that most other multiplayer shooter games don't have; humour.

Most games now can go on about graphics and cool physics, but UT tends to be designed in a way that makes it all funny. UT3 games have a certain tongue in cheek and slapstick quality about them that is just fun to watch and hilarious to play. Can't remember the number of times I stop and just laugh out loud at stuff; a tank that rolls over, killing the players it was trying to protect, shooting someone on a tower, and seeing them unbalance and fall off, or simply the hilarious taunting of the AI bots. Its all just entertaining, and makes you realise that you are having fun rather than competing... and that is really what its all about.

Disclaimer: I reviewed the full game, but could not find many multiplayer games out there, as the game is very new at time of review. Also, the issues with the laptop may be driver related... will add to this review if the situation changes.

5 out of 5 stars THE ABSOLUTE GAME OF THE YEAR!!!   November 19, 2007

Games that are as long awaited as UT3 always bear the inherent danger of becoming over-hyped and to inevitably disappoint in the end. Well, this is NOT the case with this game. UT3 ROCKS!

Graphically you have not seen anything that beautiful this year! Surfaces, shadows and explosions are just GORGEOUS! Yes, I liked the graphics even more than those in CRYSIS (and I gave CRYSIS a raving review - check it out if you like): they are crisper and more atmospheric.

Fans of the UT-series will meet again all our old ...friends: the Bio Rifle, the Link Gun, the Shock Rifle, the Flak Cannon (my favorite!), the Rocket Launcher and the Sniper Rifle. New additions are the Enforcer (to replace the under-used Assault rifle) and the Impact Hammer (replacing the shield gun). An interesting twist: hitting an enhanced target with the Impact Hammer's alternative fire will drop his power-up for you to grab!
SuperWeapons are also at our disposal, both the Redeamer and the new Target Painter.

The number of available vehicles has been enriched as well. Besides the Axon vehicles from UT2004 (which have been renovated), a new Necris set is available: vehicles that demonstrate novel behaviors, yet are beautifully balanced with the Axon set.

What is really impressive once more are the environments. You have to see them to believe them...! And the skies...! I have not seen more breathtaking skies ever since, well, the original UNREAL.

Since this is a pretty demanding game, once the rockets start flying do not trust that by meeting the Minimum requirements your system can handle this. So, here are the official RECOMMENDED requirements:
* 2.4GHz Dual-Core Processor
* 1GB of RAM
* nVIDIA 7800GTX OR ATI x1300 GFX-card
* 8 GB of free HDD space
(on either WinXp (SP2) or WinVISTA)

I cannot imagine anyone not enjoying this...

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

5 out of 5 stars Damn, it's good ;-)   December 6, 2007

Like every other FPS-head across the world, I was waiting with bated breath for UT3. I played the demo, and to be frank, wasn't impressed. The full game, on the other hand, is a wowzah!

The gameplay is fantastic, the motion fluid and the physics nothing short of superb. The introduction of the Necris vehicles, their alien control and methods of operation is inspired - the Axon vehicles are improved, being far more 'solid' and just looking and handling in a more 'real' way.

I'd agree with others that the selection of maps 'out of the box' is pretty poor, especially considering how long we've all been waiting for this game to be completed. I am confident that Epic will provide more maps in the near future, hopefully as free downloads. The expansion potential of the game is unlimited and I just know that in darkened rooms lit only by flickering screens all over the world, mappers are cooking up mindblowing maps, just as they have for the other UTs.

Criticisms I read here and elsewhere of the graphics and speed of response (in the menus) must be down to sub-spec machines, or PCs that are poorly implemented. Mine has been rock-solid from Day One, the waiting-to-load times are impressively low, almost non-existent in many instances - better than previous iterations, certainly.

I built my machine deliberately anticipating UT3 and Vista, working with the recommended specs rather than minimums: 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 2Gb RAM, NVidia 7900GS graphics card and SATA HDDs. Running at 1024x768 on my 19" LCD monitor, the thing looks just incredible, with no jerkiness, dropouts or stalling while getting a regular 30fps. This is not a top-spec machine by any means, the most important bits cost less than 300 quid all in, so it isn't difficult to make this game run as it was intended to.

In conclusion - well worth the wait, providing your PC can hack the pace.

Iv been playing the demo non-stop for about a week now and MY GOD i love it!! Its a fast-paced, over the top gore fest, the weapons look sexy and the AI is perfect. The best bit has to be the vehciles though, my favourite is the Darkwraith, just think a War of the Worlds stridder thing with twin plasma cannons of pure death.
All in all this game in fantastic, singleplayer or multiplayer, so what are you waiting for! Go get it! I have a rocket launcher and i'm not afraid to use it!!

Having followed the Unreal Tournament series right up until now I have been blown away at the sheer scale of mass destruction and death that trademarks these games.

This latest instalment has been yet another success. Never before have I actually considered the fact that the PC may actually be capable of realistic graphics, having been an extreme Xbox 360 gamer for a good year an a half until a few weeks ago when I made that big push and bought a 2,000 PC to run the latest games. This game came with the PC and I can say it was worth every penny just to play this game.

The graphics are beyond what I expected. I made a comparison between this and Call of Duty 4 (the leading game in `realistic graphics'). I got my mate to play CoD 4 (Xbox 360 version) on a TV next to my PC monitor while I played Unreal Tournament III at its highest setting. We both decided that UT III looks better by a long shot, even believing the gameplay to be more engaging than CoD 4.

I can't say a lot more without repeating what the other reviewers have already said, but I thought the graphical capability of this game should be clearly stated. I have a system where I compare graphics to real life and base it on a percentage. This theory works by analysing human faces and texture quality. I rate this game as having a 62% Realism Factor, which is the most I have given a game in a long time. Call of Duty 4 earned a respectable 54%.
