From the creator of The Sims comes the most ambitious video game ever made: here you don't just control a single family or city but control an entire species from a single cell organism to a galactic conqueror. As impossibly complex as that might sound, the most impressive thing about Spore is just how accessible and fun it all is. The game is split into six evolutionary phases, starting with almost action-style gameplay at the microscopic level. From there you move to the creature phase on dry land, before going on to the tribal phase and the beginnings of society and technology. From there it's onto the city phase, which plays a bit like SimCity, and from there to the Civilisation phase which plays something like, you guessed it, Civilization. The final phase takes part in outer space where by hook or by crock your species must reign triumphant.Each phase has its own editing tools associated with it for things like vehicles and buildings. By far the most fun though is the creature tool, which allows you to create your own fully animated lifeform from scratch using a huge range of limbs, facial features and colourings. What's also interesting is that the other planets in the galaxy aren't all pre-populated by the game. Instead, by connecting online you can upload your races, and download those from other people, to fill the galaxy with civilizations from other players around the world. Any one of the six phases would normally be enough for any one game on its own, but this looks like it's going to turn out to be the world's first everything simulator.

Spore is a really great game. Sure it is not perfect, but it will provide hours of fun. There is something really satisfying about creating a creature from nothing and getting it into space. The Cell and Creature parts of the game provide an interesting backdrop in which to evolve your creature. And it is the creature editor which is the star of the show there.
The tribal and civilization parts of the game are two different strategy "lite" games which were not as strong. You can still add personality to your creatures there but I would have liked to have seen a bit more depth. The final space stage is engrossing with plenty to do if you want to.
Warning: This is not a hard-core game. If you are looking for a pre-baked story, or a tricky puzzle game this is not it. If you want lots of action and explosions, look elsewhere. On the other hand if you have enjoyed Maxis previous titles like Sim-City or The Sims you will have a blast with this game. If you are looking for a great game to give as a present for someone who doesn't play many games then you can't really go wrong with Spore.
The game overall allows you to make the story for yourself. You feel really connected to your creatures in a way few games do. Overall it is a fun game that makes you want to keep playing to see what happens. I don't know how long the charm will continue, but I do know it has a lot more replay value than most games out there. And it makes a great change from the hard-core games I normally play.

Apparently this is a horrible game because of the internet thing that only allows 3 installations. Okay fair point.
Apparently this isn't that great of a game because its to simple and easy to play. Again fair point.
Now here's why I disagree; firstly the internet thing is annoying, but to be honest who buys a game to install it than take it off??? I don't and can't for the life of me understand why anyone would want to. Except maybe hard-drive space for the computer. Which leads to my next point.
This game is clearly not for hardcore gamers, in the same way playing football at the park with mates is not going to earn you 250,000 a week, the reason i don't mind the difficulty is simple, I play games for fun. This game is aimed at those who want FUN, when or where does it say this is for the veteran gamers. I mean look at it, listen to the theme tune, is all colourful and bright. the game is aimed at people who will buy the game and actually play it, rather than those who buy lots of games, spend 2-3 hours on it, Judge, uninstall it and buy a new game etc.
The aspects that interested me the most was creating everything from creatures to spaceships. That was the challenging part of the game. The game is fun and entertaining as a whole, i think if each phase (5 phases in the game to develop your creature) were sold separately it would have floped. But this game is fully deserving of praise just for the epic scale it sets, the way it can integrate many bits of genre like strategy, role-playing, action etc. the ability to share content is intriguing and its interesting to see the endless ways to customize your animal.
So to say this is a bad game is to be greatly short sighted and grossly wrong. I love this game and urge you to purchase this seriously underrated

This is a beautiful, well conceived, well executed game. So rarely is something so simple to play, compelling, and well designed. If you're the sort of gamer who exclusively conducts ding/gratz MMO PvP in phat end game epix, or won't budge out of their hardcore FPS niche, then mayhap this game is not you. However, if you're a gamer slightly more flexible in their tastes, then whether hardcore or casual, it's an experience you at least should consider trying.
As a pretty hardcore gamer myself, I found it hard to not be dazzled by the sheer experience that is Spore. I haven't played a single player game until 4am for a long, long while now.
Yes there is DRM, for those of us who know and care what that means. However, once you stop playing Spore, an uninstall should get rid of it. Experts predict that EA will soon patch it away anyway. And for once, it gave me zero problems (64-bit Vista).
Yes, I wouldn't buy it from EA by direct download, as their downloadable games have some tricky built in expiry dates for redownloading and reinstalls: get yourself a boxed copy. This will also give you a printed manual, though to be honest I haven't yet had course to refer to it.
But if you enjoy gaming as much as I do, don't be misled by the negative hype drummed up by the anti-DRM community. DRM is bad, m'kay, yes, agreed, message received. However, don't confuse anti-piracy tactics employed by the publishing company with the actual game created by its developers. The people who created this game are not evil corporate suits. This is the result of real creativity, dedication and extremely hard work by some very, very talented people. Don't miss out. It's awfully good.

Ok, let me get one thing out of the way, yes the DRM can only be described as offensive, and when I do use up my three installs I will be on the phone swearing at EA.
But that is the way it is. You knew it was there, so dont buy it if you think it is going to cause a problem. Eventually the game industry (like the music industry is starting to) will relaise that DRM is not the way to stop illegal downloading, and that all it does in fact is drive potential legimate customers to illegal DRM free sources.
This is no reason not to give the game itself a good review. I personally enjoyed every stage of the game (although space stage did get a little annoying after a bit). Yes, each stage in itself is not that hard or even that compelex, however they are all fun. And when all 5 stages are blended togther they do make one good (if not great) game. The transitions between stages are handled well I couldn't help feel a small jolt of pride when my creature first picked up a stick and banged it on a rock.
This is not a game if you want something challanging, it is a game for you to be creative with, and the creators in it make it so easy to do this.
Overall I would highly reccomend this game, and cannot stress enough how much I have actually enjoyed playing it, despite it's lack of complex gameplay.

Firstly, i am disgusted at how many people have complained about the DRM on this game...
Amazon.co.uk have done a great job of keeping the reviews section clean, but i went on to Amazon.com today, and there are over 920 1 star reviews, all of which are based on a DRM issue.
Seriously, WHY ARE YOU PEOPLE ACTING SO SURPRISED?!?!
Its not the first game with strict DRM and it wont be the last, and EA far from tried to hide it, so why is everyone acting like EA have robbed them of their money?
If you refuse to buy the game because of the DRM, then you have no right to review the game in my opinion, since you have not played it, therefore you have nothing to actually review.
But the fact is people - the game delivers on all fronts.
The gameplay is utterly fantastic, from the Cell Stage to the Space stage...the customisation is extensive, i spent over 2 hours just fiddling with my first creation.
The graphics are definitely up to scratch...sure, its not Gears of War quality, but its still great, and for me, suits the style of the game.
Thanks to the community factor of being able to integrate other peoples creations, this game has marvellous replayability, since you will very rarely see the same creatures over and over, and you will most probably play differently every time yourself anyways.
I really cant recommend this game enough, and i am sure once people get over the DRM issue, the quality will really shine through and this game will become a classic in time.
