More than just chess on steroids!! November 2, 2007 23 out of 23 found this review helpful
This game is AWESOME. It has just the exclusivity that PS3 owners need to differentiate themselves from those other consoles.
I spent a lot of time researching this slowly emerging game and it took me a lot of digging to find the facts,- but it wasnt long before I was compulsed to drive 50 miles & grab a copy.
The aim of the game is to set up the 9 grid board and capture any 5 squares by summoning creatures and spells using your hand of cards which you place on the squares... Your opponent also has the same aim so you have to be very strategical with which units you place and when. Each unit can attack and defend from different directions so you play off your oppenent by exploiting these. Not only this - but each square represents terrain and your placed units get bonuses or penalties based on where you place them as well as each card having it's own abilities. This all adds up to make some mind twistingly great strategy although there is a dash of luck as well. Once you know how to play, you will be thinking very long and hard about your next move and it's great seeing strategies pay off.
What annoys me is: >The marketing is pretty poor so you could easily overlook this box in a store; It is a bluray case with a hefty 70 price tag and nowhere does it say it comes with the camera, but this is not the case as you get the eye toy with it. >The play matt is a lowsy piece of cloth which rucks up when you place the cards (improved by ironing first)unless you are very careful. >The tutorial is the most droning load of drivvle and confused me more than anything so I just learnt how to play myself. >The heavy metal soundtrack becomes a touch repetitive. >US version is half the price but i would still say 60 is well worth it. >Manual only provides the basics so you'll probably find yourself on forums looking to find answers for some of the advanced elements of the game.
Now for the good points: >There is a massive amount to learn once you get to grips with this game which is what makes it so riveting. Ive had it for a week now and im still learning different things about it which make you use a different strategy. >The way the camera reads the cards and puts a 3d character on the screen is fantastic and so so innovative. >You get a starter deck of 30 cards but you can buy random booster packs to get you more units/spells (110 available). Some theme packs are available which give the same as booster packs but are biased towards certain ranges of units. BEWARE!- This can get expensive if you become obsessive about collecting them all! >Free online multiplayer (with ranked option) so you and your friends can all discuss your next move. >You can play a friend or the computer which makes a nice change from vegging in front of the sofa. >Millions of strategies to use which make this a game for life.
Ive never played card games before but Ive got to say this is a fantastic innovation and will hopefully lead to all sorts of expansions. If you are a ps3 owner at a loose end who loves turn based strategy then this is definately for you. I couldnt recommend it more.
Interactive card game with PS3 eye toy September 13, 2007 12 out of 18 found this review helpful
This game looks like it could be the number 1 game on the Christmas list this year. When I saw this game it reminded me of the interactive board game in star wars where the monsters actually battled on the table in front of you. This game is much like that, using the latest technology with the new PS3 eye toy. This game comes with a deck of cards which are laid out in front of you. The eye toy recognises the individual cards and on your TV screen you will see a monster sitting on the card you have in your hand. You can prod the monster with your hand and it will actually react to it. Well worth a pre order I think.

This game is essentially a trading card game. The problems with tcg's is that if you don't go to the tournements you face the same opponents over and over again. With this not so, coupled with an innovative system to stop cheating in the online mode and the depth of strategy involved this is going to be a huge hit, so much so even i've succombed and pre-ordered it. This game is an new and exciting innovative use of todays technologyand it's currently the only way to get the new PSEye, go on pre-order it, you know you won't regret it.
Excellent blast on Christmas Day and beyond December 27, 2007 This is a tremendous game. It takes 3 or 4 hands to understand the game properly (Things like don't put certain card types on fire fields....d'oh .... That mistake cost me a game) and some other subtleties but once you have it sussed there seems to be depths of play that escaped us at first. It's a little like learning chess....once you have the basics you can start thinking of smarter ways of going about winning. My son got a PS3 and various games for his Christmas present but to be honest we've had virtualy nothing but this on. It's a great visual game and even my father my son's grandad got to understand it and join in. It's a great card game and taken to a whole new level with the graphics. Thoroughly recommended. I have only one word of warning or comment though... buy a couple of the pre-made sets of cards and invest in a dozen or so booster pacs for some really great fun.
Brilliant, original, amazing fun. January 8, 2008 This is what owning a PS3 is all about!!
I received this game for Christmas day (with Biolith Scourge theme deck and 4 additional booster packs) and since then I've hardly stopped playing it, and if I'm not playing it I'm trying to improve my decks.
Since getting it I've bought a Fire Crusader theme deck and another 5 booster packs which I should take delivery of any day now :)
Once you get over the initial confusion this game really comes into its own. It's furiously addictive and is a genuinely original and fresh take on the trading card genre. The way the camera reads your cards and generates a 3D creature on screen almost immediately is truly amazing and is a sight to behold. The possibilities of this game are incredible, there's just so much strategy involved and half the fun of this game is getting to know your cards and building your very own deck, then taking it online to battle against the world for never the same game twice.
Graphically the game is fantastic, with loads of cool lighting and magic effects when you place a card on the board and a creature or spell is generated in front of your very eyes.
I recommend this game to anyone that's a fan of trading card games, or anyone that is getting tired of the constant stream or shooters on the market at present. It really is a breath of fresh air and a real treat to find a game that breaks the mould and dares to be different, and it succeeds brilliantly. It's incredibly deep and involving and requires a great deal of time to master, but once you do it is very rewarding.
Get this game. You will not regret it.
