Product Description Roll up, roll up! The carnival is in town and it's time to party! Join Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, DK and more of your favourite Nintendo characters as they compete across five brand new game boards and more than 60 new minigames to win the coveted prize: a year's supply of candy! But Bowser isn't about to let them get away with it... For the first Mario Party on Wii, up to four players roll virtual dice and move around the game boards (ranging from a haunted house to a moving train and a treasure island) before competing in crazy minigames that make full use of the Wii Remote; such as tightrope walking, skipping, snowboarding, boat rowing, lassoing and even cake decorating. As well as the main, madcap multiplayer game, Mario Party 8 also features a special single-player only mode, a minigame-only mode, a bazaar where you can unlock new minigames and goodies, and a mode made specifically for playing as Mii characters!
Amazon.co.uk Preview Although they love their sequels as much as any company, Nintendo aren't usually ones to go in for yearly updates. The Mario Party series, developed by Bomberman creators Hudson, is their only example of the phenomena. As such, the series was always guaranteed to make an early appearance on the Wii - and with good reason too since its mix of board game antics and multiplayer mini-games are perfectly suited to the motion control of the Wii remote. Whereas some of the previous sequels have seemed a little unnecessary, this one actually feels like a brand new game. There are six new boards and fourteen different playable characters from amongst the usual Mushroom Kingdom pantheon. There's also a new power-up system replacing the "orbs" of previous games with "candy". These allow characters to transform into different forms to avoid traps and nobble other players, ranging from an airplane, to a bowling ball and a vampire.Of course what's most anticipated about the game is the 70 plus different mini-games, as usual ordered into 1 vs. 3, 2 vs. 2 and free-for-all games. These involve such activities as using the Wii remote to ride a water ski, tightrope walking, lassoing barrels, paddling a rowing boat with a partner, shooting on a target range and being the first to give your pet Chomp a wash. The games and presentation may all seem very cute but as ever the game is an expert at tempting you to cheat and conspire against your fellow players at every opportunity, making this the one family board game you won't mind having an argument over. I LOVE IT! January 2, 2008 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
This game is practically the BEST multiplayer game for many reasons.
Firstly, it is EASY to play for ANYONE of ANY AGE whether they have played video games before or not!
Secondly, it takes out the COMPETITIVE side inside anyone who plays it, especially when there are 4 people playing.
Thirdly, you cannot be that much "better" than others in this game as most mini games are decided on chance, and the final results depend on randomly chosen factors that you only know once the gameplay is over - meaning it really does not matter what strategy you opt for at the beginning! An example could be: it was how many times you "shopped for sweets" that counts instead of how many times you stepped on the green blocks... or how many coins you collected!
What this means is that, ultimately, the SUSPENSE IS ENORMOUS because the results of the winner depend on factors that are revealed only at the very end!
Finally, there are DIFFERENT BOARD GAMES! Yes! Unlike some of the previous MARIO PARTY games, this one enables you to enjoy different game plays where the objective of the game varies from buying hotels (similiar to the world's best ever board game MONOPOLY) to finding BOO the GHOST in a haunted mansion to obtain stars!
Nintendo has managed to pull out a CLASSIC game thanks to their focus on MULTIPLAYER GAMEPLAY instead of hardcore graphics! Overall, highly enjoyable and will go on and on and on!!!
Minigames Galore! August 2, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I'd been looking forward to this game for ages and it doesn't disappoint. There's the main boardgame, a one player challenge game which isn't particularly taxing to complete and a load of extras. The best thing is the huge amount of minigames which all use the wiimote very well, looks like there are:
27 Duel 18 4 Player 10 2 vs 2 9 1 vs 3 5 Battle 3 Challenge
The perfect game to get a few mates round, have a few beers and laugh at games such as Tightrope walking, lasso-ing, 2 player boat rowing & spinning giant eyeballs (needs to be seen to be believed!) to name but a few. I can't believe who dreams this stuff up, but it's genius!
Only nag is that for some reason gameplay on mine is in 4-3 aspect rather than all the start and menus which appear in 16-9 on my widescreen telly. Checked all the settings are widescreen so not sure why this is the case.
Excellent but you need more than one player January 15, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is an excellent game but only If there are more than one of you, It's pretty boring as a one player.
The game is made of lots of mini games and you compete against up to 4 players, which is why it is fun with more than one, otherwise you basically watch the Wii computer playing against it self.
First time I set it up for my little boy I could not make it out and thought the people at Nintendo must have been on some hallucinogenic drug as It just didn't make sense. When I purchased a second controller and we tried again then I understood the game, I have as much fun watching my little boy play it with his friends. I would suggest that you don't buy If your only going to play as a one player, snap it up If you are going to use as a multiplayer.
Mario Party September 23, 2007 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I really enjoy mario party (still) I am only 9yrs old and i am using my dads name and stuff. I still find it greatly enjoyable, some people say that it is boring but i can only HALF agree maybe it does but at the moment every second of it is great. I love how you have all the new characters toadette, boo ............... i love love love how you fight against other characters and take the challenge on, move each space quickly and then eat sweets on the game and become SUPER. I enjoy all the minigames too! At first i had know idea what to do but i picked up in 10mins easy peasy, though the challenges are hard (on the game you have 3 files) Sasha x x
Unfair 'Official' Reviews September 12, 2007 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I was unsure about this game due to 'official' magazine reviews being pretty poor but having rented it initially I have to say that official reviews seem to have missed the point. Being new to Nintendo products with the WII (as I'm sure many people are) this served as my introduction to the party style of game and for me it was innovative and entertaining. There's a wide variety of mini games using the more traditional sideways remote control and new wiimote style actions.
What's more this is great fun in multiplayer OR single player modes and the considerable amount of extras and minigames will keep you interested for ages.
If you fancy something light to pick up and play now and then you could do a lot worse than this title.
