Amazon.co.uk Review
You might not see the supporting merchandise so much nowadays but Pokemon is still the most successful games franchise in history. Diamond and Pearl sold 5 million copies in Japan in under three months and 1 million in America in just one month, breaking all records for the year and the series. At first sight though this looks disappointingly similar to the existing games, with only a subtle 3D effect for the game world and largely static 2D battles. However the gameplay has undergone a complete overhaul, adding numerous new features and reintroducing others from Gold/Silver/Crystal, that had previously been removed. The basics are still the same though, as you venture out into the world (called Sinnoh this time) in an attempt to catalogue each and every pokemon and battle the evil Team Galactic. Catching and training a pokemon for combat also works the same as before, although beauty and talent contests have been greatly expanded for those that prefer as little violence as possible. The game includes a day and night cycle, which severely impacts the appearance of pokemon, and you are given a new gadget called a poketch which starts as a simple watch but can be upgraded to everything from a scanner to a map. Secret bases are back and considerably more sophisticated than before but the most important new feature by far is the online mode. You can now trade, chat and battle with fans from around the world - proving that progress is not always just a case of better graphics. Harrison Dent

Extra features of Pokemon Pearl/Diamond April 9, 2007 29 out of 31 found this review helpful
In this new addition to the series you lose the pokenav and get in turn a watch, at first it seems dull (with only a map and the time) but as you go on it has up to 25 functions including how your pokemon are feeling, an alarm (from nintendo events) and a berry watcher, which tells you when berries you have planted are ripe. No longer do you make pokeblock either but instead BREAD! Though the game calls it Pofin. If you place your copy of sapphire, emerald, ruby, leaf green or fire red into the game boy advance slot then an extra 8 pokemon (from that game) will be available in the safari zone until the cartridge is removed. BUT BEWARE if you are using a different region ( ours is PAL america is NTSC etc. )game from the ds version this will fail, even though handheld games are region free they can only mix records if from the same region. Also, as you would guess, there are 107 new pokemon the starters of which being:- GRASS Turtwig (tutle), WATER Piplup (penguin) and FIRE Chimchar (monkey) Enjoy the new game along with the 14 new legendary pokemon it brings!
Nostalgic, yet brand new! April 29, 2007 35 out of 38 found this review helpful
After recently obtaining this game from the States, the experience has been nothing less than awesome. Not properly executed since Gold/Silver, the night/day system is back! Of the new Pokemon introduced (over 100) the time system treats you with new events and Pokemon at different times of the day. The atmosphere is beautifully pulled off, with orange tints to the game in the evening and lights switched on in the building at night. The new Pokemon are a real treat, although you may find some disappointment that you're still getting your Ratatta and Pidgey equivalent in the game, rather than a complete new line-up. But if that's what you know and love, then this game will only satisfy you further! Not only that, but finally, you can obtain majority of the 493 Pokemon within the game and transfer between your older Advance generation (Ru/Sa/Em/FR/LG) are possible through Pal Park. The graphics, although still much the same despite the new system, are beautiful and colourful. They match the game perfectly with its slightly pseudo-3D environment. You might be disappointed though if you expected a real update. Although, perhaps the most alluring feature of the game is the new WiFi system, allowing you to battle and trade your precious Pokemon all over the world. This also includes voice chats amoung mutual friends. However, one must be aware of the faults of the game. - nothing has really changed dramatically, except the addition of WiFi - there is on random battle system with other players in the WiFi, forcing you to find your own means of contacting someone - the WiFi is heavily exploited at the moment, with illegal and hacked Pokemon being fought and traded with. One must be aware of scammers and hackers if they don't want to lose their hard-earned legal Pokemon - there is still only one save file, so sharing your game is still not easy Final Highlights: - new day/night system integrated - WiFi trading and battling - New Pokemon, boosting the current number to 493! - Beautiful music and atmosphere - Lots to do with contests, new events and a whole new world!
Conclusion: If people are expecting a new game, you'll be disappointed. But for all you Pokefans out there, this will tickle-you-pink with everything that is included. For those waiting, roll on June!
Extensive game play and enthralling September 12, 2007 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
First off, I'm a 25 year old who first played Pokemon Red, but didn't play any of the other releases, until Pokemon Ranger (DS) and now Pokemon Pearl. When I first started playing, I thought that the game was good, cute and would amuse me for maybe a few days. Nearly 100 hours of gameplay later (in only three weeks!), I am completely addicted to this game, so much so that I have bought a copy of Pokemon Emerald and Pokemon LeafGreen to help me complete my Pearl pokedex.
The game itself is a very simple interface, and doesn't take long at all to pick up. There is a vast map to explore, and interesting side games, such as the contests to fill up time. With added bonus of wireless trading and battling, I'm quite sure this is a game that will have many more hours played on it.
The game also has the ability to save anywhere - which means you aren't tied to the console to push on to the next save point (As with Pokemon Ranger). I would reccommend this game to anyone looking for a big game to really get involved in, it's brought me a lot of enjoyment, and was definitely money well spent.
To clear things up August 14, 2007 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
Ok, first things first, if you are thinking "There are so many good reviews, but what ifits too childish?" DONT! This game is far greater than 5 stars, but thats the limit. For those of you who are going to buy it, but just cant seem to decide, Diamond or Pearl, despite Diamond being more popular, pick Pearl. Later on around the Elite 4 you will have an easier time.A warning to those who will buy it, it is reccomended that you own Fire Red and Saphire/Ruby/Emerald, as pokemon fromthose generations are only obtainable through Migration. You can Migrite Pokemon after completing the Sinnoh Pokedex. That was just to help, now I serioously reccomend this game.
Diamond (and pearl) is a girls ( and guys) best friend! August 24, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
The graphics are much better, and if you are not obsessed with pokemon yet you soon will be! The game is addictive, and the storyline is much more complicated than boring ruby/sapphire! I reccommend this game to all kids and teenagers, girls and boys alike! Many people sneer at pokemon, but they are WRONG.It is an interesting game, that is very different from fire red/leaf green, and much better than the rubbish Pokemon Ranger. In short; BUY BUY BUY!
