As sci-fi action blockbusters go, they don't come much bigger than Transformers. Maybe it's because of the subject matter: it's based on a toy line from the 1980s, concerning giant robots from outer space engaged in a civil war that pits the heroic Autobots against the evil Decepticons. They have the ability to disguise themselves as vehicles and other mechanical objects, transforming back into robots when it's time to stomp each other senseless. As a premise, it's rather silly. But it's also very simple, and that's why it works. The heroes are truly heroic: the noble and powerful Autobot leader Optimus Prime is one of the most iconic characters of the 1980s, and getting the original voice actor (Peter Cullen) to give him life was a stroke of genius. The villains, meanwhile, are just plain evil: Decepticon leader Megatron (voiced by Hugo Weaving) is motivated by absolute power, and his soldiers are not above a bit of wanton destruction to achieve their goals. Mix in a bit of mysticism in the form of the Allspark, the source of life for all Transformers, and the result is pure cinematic magic. It's not a perfect film: there are some characters and sub-plots that are unnecessary and which go nowhere, and at almost three hours, it's a lot of movie. But the Transformers themselves, rendered in CGI, have a very realistic size and weight on screen, and look particularly good as they switch from one mode to the other. Moreover, director Michael Bay is smart enough to realise that appealing to kids doesn't mean pandering to them--the cutest robot on screen is a manic little psychotic killer with the apt name Frenzy. The humans in the film, meanwhile, keep the film grounded, whilst never detracting from the real robot stars. Unlike The Matrix trilogy, which tried to be too clever, or The Lord of the Rings films, which were too clever, Transformers is probably the best science fiction epic since the original Star Wars trilogy. --Robert Burrow

I haven't been to see many films this year, but when I saw a preview for this at Spiderman 3, I knew I had to make the effort to see this.
The special effects set new standards. Although some of the actual transformations are done 'too close' in my opinion, at no point did I lose the illusion through a dodgey effect. Lets face it, in the matrix there were a couple of times when Keanu looked like CGI rather than a real person. In the massive punch up at the end, with the woman cowering in the middle of the street (you'll know the bit I mean when you see it), my jaw actually dropped at the awesomeness of it all.
Okay, there are some cheesey bits in there. Like the part in the alleyway where the Autobots were introducing themselves; having a 30ft robot body pop and talk street was just all wrong! Most of the humour is fair amusing though, unless you are a complete brick wall.
Suspend belief for a couple of hours, after all almost every bit of Sci-Fi or fantasy is a load of old hoey if you let yourself think about it, sit back with the family and enjoy; whatever your age.

Wow a blast from the past grew up with the robots back in the 80's, didn't think the film would do so well.
Well talk about blown away ending up going to see it in the cinema 3 times as it was so fab, and soon as the dvd came out, i had to buy it again fab that more and more dvds are having subtitles for us deaf film fans.

I watched Transformers at a late night preview, really just to kill some dead time. I took a view that it would probably be a good time filler, I am not a real fan of the 1980s series but was intrigued by some of the positive reviews that I had read about the film...
What I got instead was the best Action/ Sci Fi film so far this year, filled not only with incredible SFX but great performances from the flesh and blood cast, despite playing second fiddle to the towering robots...
Shia Laboeuf turns in a great performance as Sam, a nerdy lad who has to make the jump to all action hero, saving the world while being under some very frightening fire, indeed.
Aiding and protecting him in this is his car - a clapped out Camaro which is actually one of the good Transformers, a warrior robot called Bumblebee. The relationship between Bumblebee and Laboeuf is both amusing and touching, and the scenes where the car is trying to help Laboeuf get the girl of his dreams are pure class.
The plot sees the good Autobots led by the towering Optimus Prime taking on the evil Decepticons, led by the even larger and very menacing Megatron. Young Sam is in possession of some information which could prove invaluable to either side, and the Decepticons will quite literally use any means possible to obtain this. The Autobots protect Sam, all the while having to take on the Decepticons and a largely incredulous US Army and Air Force.
The action sequences are stunning and watching them in a cinema is like seeing a Terminator film for the first time. Sound and vision are stunning. Characterisation is great, with humour and adult themes nicely spliced between the action and SFX. The SFX themselves represent in my opinion the best use to date of the CGI technology which is seamless in this film.
Transformers is a film that demands to be seen in a cinema and I for one will be treating myself to an encore. As for DVD, I will wait for the forthcoming HD DVD release as I want to be able to see this film again in the best possible picture and sound that home cinema can offer. Anyway congratulations to Michael Bay for pulling this one out of the hat, after the stinker that was The Island.

When I first heard they were making TRANSFORMERS into a movie - I was beside myself, a man nearly 30 acting as giddy as when I used to watch the original cartoons.
The day came and I was there on the first day of showing at the cinema with a buzz eager to burst from inside........movie starting, yippee.
What a great film. I was blown away by the power of CGI and special effects and even got goosebumps when Optimus Prime turned up as the truck before standing proud to be the iconic figure that he always was to me.
Thinking about it now, Optimus Prime was probably the only transformer in the film that actually looked like how I remember him to be. I am sure Megatron looked different in original cartoon and could not work out which Decepticon was which at some stages. The film had very quick transforming of the robots to the point that you could not work out which bit goes where or where it came from but I don't see this point as a major disappointment in viewing pleasure but it would of been nice to the see the tranforming instead of a blur of parts whizzing about. Now I am just being picky....enough.
I thought the film had a fantastic blend of all elements needed to make it enjoyable for all ages. There was not only comedy, 'WOW' factor effects and a good storyline summary of the Autobots and Decepticons battling history for all those TRANSFORMERS newbies but also a nostalgic reminder and sprinkle of magic for the fans of yester-year.
I feel it is a must see and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this 2 hour+ blockbuster and will be buying the DVD to satisfy my childhood cravings whenever they should become necessary.
Go and see for yourself and enjoy as much as I did

Transformers is one of the few 80's cartoons that you can look back on as an older person and not cringe. Sure, its a little cheesy and the animation can be pretty bad at times, but compared to say, Thundercats or He-Man, this one still holds up. So there you have it, I'm a fan, but sensible enough to know that if you do a film version, changes HAVE to be made. The cartoon versions of the robots would not work in a 'real-world' situation and the story itself would have to have, well, heart. And it does. The young leads of the movie are fantastic and anchor the very unrealistic idea of 15 foot robots into our world. Thanks to that, we can sit back and watch the spectacle of Autobots and Decepticons battling for control of the powerful 'allspark' cube with real awe, and real concern for the characters, human and machine. Director Michael Bay, well known for OTT action movies like Armageddon and Bad Boys, for once tones down the flash-bang editing and long live America style patriotism in favour of a more close-knit story, wheeling out the pyrotechnics in a last hour of almost non-stop robo carnage. The transformations are spectacular and the fx superb. The autobots have more rounded characters than the Decepticons, because we spend more time with them, but the bad-guys are extremely cool. Voice-work is great all round, with Peter Cullen as Optimus (encoring from the cartoon) and Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith from the Matrix)has a blast as Megatron. In a Summer of disappointments, like Pirates 3 and Spider-Man 3, Transformers is head and shoulders above the rest.
