Amazon.co.uk Review
Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resembling Dead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. If you're already confused, don't worry--plot is definitely not the strong suit of the franchise, as the film excels during its stunt pieces, which are impressively extravagant (in particular a three-way swordfight atop a mill wheel). It may help to know that Dead Man's Chest was filmed simultaneously with some of Pirates 3, so don't expect a complete resolution (think more The Empire Strikes Back) or the movie will feel a lot longer than it really is. Bloom shows a tad bit more brawn this time around, but he's still every bit as pretty as the tomboyish Knightley. (Seriously, sometimes you think they could swap roles.) Bill Nighy (Love, Actually) weighs in as Davy Jones and Stellan Skarsgard appears as Will's undead father. But the film still belongs wholly to Depp, who in a reprise of his Oscar-nominated role gets all the belly laughs with a single widened eyeliner-ed gaze. He still runs like a cartoon hen and slurs like Keith Richards--and he's still one of the most fascinating movie characters in recent history. --Ellen A. Kim

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!   June 27, 2007

POTC: DMC Blu-Ray (and POTC1) are absolutely awesome. Disney have done a real good job in delivering full HD 1080p picture with 48kHz uncompressed 5.1 audio, with amazing results. Particularly impressive is the detail in Davy Jone's face and the part where Jack fires the gun to ignite the gunpowder on the Black Pearl. They have also included additional extras, along with the original extras from the DVD release (and Lost disc edition).

To address the negative comments below.... This is not a fault with the discs, but is simply an issue with the capabilities of the said blu-ray players. But ultimately, why would one buy a standalone blu-ray player costing 500+, when one can get a PS3 for 400 that does the same job and can play games, view digital camera photos, play music, download movie trailers/games and browse the internet!!!?? The PS3 is by no means a half-hearted blu-ray player: It is HDMI v1.3 (i.e. capable of full HD 1080p playback) and the recent firmware release has upgraded it to 24Hz play back capable (the original framerate that movies are filmed in). And, did I forget to mention, it is wireless (or ethernet), so connects to your home broadband and updates itself automatically - no faffing around with burning discs from the internet to upgrade the firmware!!

Also, the POTC blu-rays are region-free - i.e. you can buy them from Amazon.com for $24 (i.e. 12) and they will work on any blu-ray capable player. (Region free is detailed in the additonal info on Amazon.com - Bascially, movie studios restrict discs to regions in order to stagger the release across the globe - as these movies have been released on DVD before (and so some format is globally available), there is no need to stagger the blu-ray release) International postage is ~15, but you've saved this if you buy at least 2 blu-rays!! I thus bought both POTC 1&2 with Planet Earth 4 disc blu-ray set - $100 down to $66 i.e. 32 - and not released by BBC in UK until November (and will probably be at least 50 then anyway!!) - a true showcase of colour to show off your HD TV!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliance   August 22, 2007

I'm writing this review purely because I think its shameful that this film currently has a 3 star rating because it doesn't work on some people's hardware..Surely you should be posting a negative comment on the hardware in questions area, and not the DVD as it isn't the discs fault..

Agro aside, we'll get to the review:

Visually, Pirates of the Caribbean 2 is the greatest blu-ray movie I have seen so far, and believe me I have seen plenty. From start to finish the film's clarity and depth are astounding, colour rendition is immaculate as is the transfer from source. There is hardly any grain (and by this I mean none, but some people tend to split hairs) and the picture is so detailed that the film takes on an entirely new life and brings an entirely new experience. If you're after a visual feast, this will fill you for years.

The sound follows the footsteps of the video. It is immaculate. Perfectly equalised and as clear as crystal. I won't say too much but all I will say is that its hard to imagine it better.

Extras: Almost too many..who am I kidding? It's brilliant, something like 13 hours of entertaining extra features to keep you busy! I especially like the training sequences and the game!

In conclusion? If you've seen the film before and don't know whether or not to spend the money to see it in HD, do it. Seriously, you don't know what you're missing. Even if you haven't seen it, and you want your first viewing to be in blu-ray trust me, you will not be disappointed with the quality!

5 out of 5 stars "You know you can't read."   June 3, 2007

"It's the Bible, you get credit for trying."

Captain Jack Sparrow is back. He has a secret (or two) and a limited time to keep from becoming a permanent fixture of the deep. All are seeking a key however the key means different things to different people. Will jack succeed? We shall see (or not.)

Over the top, every pirate pun available and non-stop. This movie can be fun if you have plenty of patients. It can be complex with overlaying purpose of many of the characters. There are plenty of one liners and sight gags.

My only suggestion is to wait until the next "installment" or movie in the "series" is produced before viewing this one. Hold your breath.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant all the way   November 14, 2007

If you are a fan of the Pirates series, this is a must-have. The movie is good fun, carried almost entirely on the shoulders of Johnny Depp, but the small amount of character development you see with Lee Arenberg and Mackenzie Crook (the oh so eloquent pirate) is a welcome development.

The picture quality is outstanding, and this one really shows why you should upgrade to HD at this point in time.

4 out of 5 stars Samsung Player needs an upgrade to play this   June 15, 2007

I mistakenly thought my copy of this disc was faulty, until I discovered that my Samsung BD-1000 player needed a firmware upgrade to play it. To do this, download the upgrade file from the Samsung site (make sure its the one for the UK/Europe, not the US one), unzip it, then burn it to a CD- not a DVD- as an IMAGE. My burn software doesn't do this, so I followed Samsung's suggestion and downloaded a trial version of NERO to do the burn. Then place it in the player, take care not to switch off during the upgrade, and then this disc will play.
