Amazon.co.uk Preview Alternative histories always provide good value and this innovative new real-time strategy features a "what if" scenario involving the outbreak of a conventional war at the end of the Cold War and a Soviet invasion of the U.S. Although the game goes to some effort to make this seem as plausible as possible it's also worth noting that the developers admit the plot is heavily influenced by 1984 Patrick Swayze non-classic Red Dawn. The game itself is similar to the popular Ground Control series, which the same team also worked on, although it features no base building or resource management, instead concentrating solely on combat and tactics. As such you can choose your weapons and equipment before a mission as well as whether you will play the role of infantry, air power, support or ground armour. Each of these four roles comes with their own specialized units, as well as tactical aids such as airstrikes, paratroopers and even tactical nuclear weapons.Graphically the game is hugely impressive; with superb lighting effects and dozens of units on screen at once. The most important visual feature though is the completely destructible 3D battlefields which are slowly demolished by shells and explosions over the course of a level. Skyscrapers and whole forests can be annihilated in a short order, emphasising the game's grim sense of apocalyptic doom. The fully featured multiplayer can be played online by up to 16 people and allows you to take control of Soviet, American and NATO forces in head-to-head or team based battles. There's already a number of innovative new real-time strategy games scheduled for 2007 but this is certainly looking like one of the best. HARRISON DENT

Great Game, Great Graphics, Suprisingly low requirements September 23, 2007 15 out of 17 found this review helpful
***DEMO BASED***
I downloaded the demo yesterday, and after just ONE play i'm going to be buying it as soon as I have the money.
Absolutely fantastic pacing for a strategy game, although it can seem quite relentless at times, you soon get used to the all out action approach to the genre.
Unfortunately my computer is quite low spec for these days, and i was initially apprehensive about how it would run on my computer. However, i was able to run it quite well, almost no slow down. Even on low setting, when the action kicks in the explosions, smoke trails and everything else looks absolutely gorgeous. To give you an idea of the spec of my computer ive listed it below, hopefully to persuade any doubters that it really can run on an ageing system.

Multiplayer Madness October 10, 2007 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
Having played both the Beta and Demo, i couldn't wait for the real thing. Now it is out, i can throw myself full on into the campaign and multiplayer. the campaign is well written and actually has a movie like plot. On the hardest difficulty it is also very impressive, the A.I uses a multitude of tactics to wipe you out, to my annoyance.
But its the multiplayer were the fun truly starts. having only played 3 maps before the real game. i was astounded by the amount of maps, and how different they each were. each map requiring different plans and tactics. Within half a minute you're busy firing shells into the enemy. its so fast-paced. People have complained about the tactics on this game. that there isn't any. well personally i believe they are wrong. the tactics comes in form of teamwork. proper teamwork. so not matter if the enemy masses in one place. a well worked-out attack can change to tide of battle instantly. of even a well placed artillery strike. that reminds me, the visuals on this game are stunning. you can just sit there and watch the battle unfold before your eyes.
A Brilliant game offline and online A definite buy for RTS fans and should also be tried by non-RTS fans.

Fistly, I must reiterate a previous review imploring people to also go read dedicated games review sites; a lot of reviews here are woefully misguided, either appearing to have missed the point entirely (some need to look up the word 'tactics' before rendering a judgement on what doesnt qualify for it) or got so stuck in the cliche base-building RTS rut that to venture outside it is like going cold turkey (presumably one reason why the externally divisive C&C3 is so highly rated on Amazon).
Onto World in Conflict itself. Well, lets start by commenting on its designers, Massive Entertainment. In a world populated by games that are still essentially clones of the old Command & Conquer with a measure of the more artificial Warcraft 3 paper-scissor-stone mechanics thrown in, Massive have never made a game remotely like that. The two Ground Controls were different from the 'norm' and different even from each other. WiC is also like them both in that it is not only different from the genre cliche but is even different from its predecessors; no copy-and-paste design from Massive! So if you are getting bored of 'samey' RTS games, WiC is recommended on pedigree alone.
Graphics I wont talk about much; many here do, and in doing so often miss the game underneath them. The most important thing to say that the game is a rare gem these days in that it is very workable on even quite 'weak' computers.
Gameplay-wise, you take contol of a small force (roughly platoon-size) of late Cold War troops and must command them with skill against a technically equal enemy. There is some paper-scissors-stone but not in the usual, artificial way; its more naturalistic and much less rigid. Objectives generally focus around strategic locations rather than simply slugging it out with an enemy base with no actual requirement or need for manouvre. Terrain plays a huge part in the game; bullets dont pass through terrain, you actually need direct line of sight to shoot along (a rarity even in these days), and that forced requirement to manouvre mistakingly makes many people think the game is a 'rush' game, with no tactics, when it is actually the total opposite and requires actual thought to play to the fullest extent. Ultimately, it is a rare and excellent experience; a real game of tactics rather than the usual 'spam a bunch of units and rush the enemy base ASAP' (or focus simply speed-clicking micromanagement, a just as intellectually bankrupt mechanic), where movement and application of tactics are actually rewarded properly; but also it is not so overcomplicated that someone without much knowledge of military matters would find it frustrating (or conversely, where the focus is solely on micromanagement, which can frustrate others). You can choose your own level of play.
Online play is another big plus. Let me state here and now that I normally dislike online strategy gaming; usually designers with online play in mind tend to seriously compromise the quality of their game to pander to a stagnant market of artificial paper-scissor-stone online play (even otherwise excellent games like Company of Heroes ultimately fail to rise beyond mono-tactic and rigid build orders when playing online comes into effect). It also tends to be very cliquey and individualistic. Not so with WiC, where the emphasis is on teamplay. You are restricted to playing within certain roles, which is in a sense the ultimate form of paper-scissors-stone, but ironically it is managed in a way that avoids the usual frustration and restriction on creativity that so plagues other games. To win you need to play your roles not in an individually good way, but in a _mutally_ good way. A numerically inferior team can defeat a cohesively inferior team, almost unheard of in modern RTS gaming, and the highest ideal to aim for.
-----------
In summary, World in Conflict is a truly original and well-made game. It is proud of its heritage and lofty ideals, but not so much that it simply clones what has gone before. In a world that is becoming increasingly staid and lacking in originality or quality, it is a rare gem that not only delivers, but often exceeds its apparent promise. Well worth the money, but dont just take my word for it, look outside Amazon at balanced, professional reviews.
Truly amazing October 5, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Many years ago I remember installing the original Command and Conquer RTS and marvelling at it. Since then I have been a fan of the genre although as time has gone on the various titles do seem to get a bit obvious over time. After installing WIC and playing the tutorial I got the same buzz as I had back with the original c&c. I am only just into the first few missions but so far this has it all; breathtaking graphics that made me glad I spent far too much on a hot rig recently; a storyline that sets a good pace; a good mix of units and an interesting and rewarding way of building and replenishing them; great tactical support.....the artillery and airstrike element of this game is very powerful both in terms of gameplay and visuals. What also gives WIC the edge is the little touches. I was panning around the battlefield and placed the camera next to an IFV and they were having a conversation inside! The game is very fast moving indeed which isn't such a bad thing.....base building and amassing huge armies ready for a surge can get boring after a while! Great for bringing back that '80s paranoia. Best way I can describe this game is RTS but looking, tasting and feeling totally fresh!
World in Conflict is very impressive. August 27, 2007 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
Ok guys, the demo is out there should be links on most major gaming sites. Try fileshack, gamespot etc...
Anyway I am really impressed with the demo, the sheer scale and intensity of the gameplay is incredible. This is more frenetic than company of heroes by a long way.
Very detailed units, fully destructible terrain and the most realistic explosions I have EVER seen in a video game. We can't review the full game until it's here, (take notice all those of you who weirdly try to before playing!?!?!) However if the demo is anything to go by then WiC is going to be a very impressive game.
Note of caution this game like all these newfangled releases (crysis, assasins creed etc) are graphically very demanding, as there are such sweet visuals make sure you have a good rig to see them in all their glory.
Ciao bene
