Manufacturer's Description
The third game in the Fallout series, Fallout 3 is a singleplayer action role-playing game (RPG) set in a post-apocalyptic Washington DC. Combining the horrific insanity of the Cold War era theory of mutually assured destruction gone terribly wrong, with the kitschy naivety of American 1950s nuclear propaganda, Fallout 3 will satisfy both players familiar with the popular first two games in its series as well as those coming to the franchise for the first time.

The Story: Vault 101 - Jewel of the Wastes
For 200 years, Vault 101 , a fallout shelter, has faithfully served the surviving residents of Washington DC and its environs, now known as the Capital Wasteland. Though the global atomic war of 2077 left the US all but destroyed, the residents of Vault 101 enjoy a life free from the constant stress of the outside world. Giant Insects, Raiders, Slavers, and yes, even Super Mutants are all no match for superior Vault-Tec engineering. Yet one fateful morning, you awake to find that your father has defied the Overseer and left the comfort and security afforded by Vault 101 for reasons unknown. Leaving the only home you've ever known, you emerge from the Vault into the harsh Wasteland sun to search for your father, and the truth.

Key Features:

  • Blast 'Em Away With V.A.T.S.! -Even the odds in combat with the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System for your Pip-Boy Model 3000! V.A.T.S. allows you to pause time in combat, target specific body parts on your target, queue up attacks, and let Vault-Tec take out your aggression for you. Rain death and destruction in an all-new cinematic presentation featuring gory dismemberments and spectacular explosions.

5 out of 5 stars Superb, but likely to split opinion   November 3, 2008

When a classic franchise switches developer for its newest instalment, it's an understandable cause for concern. Particularly amongst the hardcore fans, who fear the magic will be lost along the way.
Since Fallout 3 was announced, the knives seem to have been out for Bethesda's take on the Black Isle PC classics.

The truth is that Fallout 3 is a magnificent game, one of the most breathtakingly realised worlds EVER. But its mechanics are near identical to its Elder Scrolls series, rather than Fallout. Admittedly, there are plenty of touches that prove Bethesda has a deep knowledge of its subject; it just feels like Oblivion.
This is either good or bad depending on your point of view, but will almost certainly determine how much you'll enjoy it.

Inventory screens are similar, albeit more streamlined and tightly designed with the Pip Boy 3000. The sense of freedom has made the transition intact, and there's an impressive array of side quests that genuinely affect how the end plays out.

So the cries this would be Oblivion with guns are true. But is that really so terrible?
The shooting, like many aspects, does take time to level up and become skilled at. But the V.A.T.S system is ingenious. It doesn't work every time, but the way an optional turn-based element has been added to combat is brilliant, and goes some way to appeasing those hardcore fans.

Fallout 3 could be the deepest, most rewarding game available. But how much did you enjoy Oblivion??

5 out of 5 stars Impresses on every level   October 26, 2008

Having been privledged to play this game before release i must say i was left feeling deeply impressed. If anyone is worried that they haven't played the first two of these games do not worry as it is not much of a continual story line and is more of a stand alone game.

To best describe this game would be oblivion with guns, this may seem simple but it is a very correct description of the title, so if you've played elder scrolls and enjoyed it you will love this, and if you like first person shooters and are looking for a bit more depth story and customisation to your games then this is also perfect for you.

The game is a true picture of what next gen gaming is all about, if you've seen the videos and gameplay you'll know what i'm talking about, the whole game is like that, you can't help but feel part of the world when the world seems so real.

This does help as the world is so large, and takes a longggg time to explore so looking around and enjoying the scenary whilst your lost or looking for something does help! This is one of the problems with the game travel is quite slow and it is enormous, but if you like going for long walks as a hobby then this won't be a problem!

There are some parts where it can get tedious but with over 100 hours of gameplay it can't all be a unique experience.

Overall i found this game extremely enjoyable, the customisation of your character your items and weapons is never ending, you get a few friends along the way...even a dog (for the old fans) which makes pretending to be from the book (film) i am legend even easier. The amount of gameplay you get for your money is definately worth 40 any day! the only part i'd love to see in the fourth is either co-op or online but thats just being picky.

The presentation, graphics and sound makes having a HD TV PS3 and surround sound all the more worth while as this game uses all three effectively, with the sound being quite errie at times.

If your a lover of oblivion or guns, or walking around a post-apocalyptic world with a large gun and a dog, then buy this game

its not for all as it'll take 20-30 hours of your time, but thats what i call value for money!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best PS3 games ever.   November 5, 2008

I was a big fan of Oblivion, but this game surpasses it. The quality shines through in every detail of this game.
From literally being born at the start, to discovering the detail of the graphics and the world when you emerge outside.
The storyline is great, missions and side quests are like being in a movie, and the way that you can "customise" your game so that 2 people could play it and have very different experiences is brilliant.
If your like games that are multi-layered, intelligent, and incredibly detailed and atmospheric (graphics and sound), you must get this.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait!   November 8, 2008

Fallout 3 has finally arrived and for fans of Oblivion it will have been well worth the wait! The same vast amount of content, myriad side quests, familiar but improved interface for relating with the non-player characters - and quite a few new toys to play with.

For me, the star of the game is VATS, the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System. I'm a newcomer to consoles and a complete duffer when it comes to using the controller for shooting the bad guys in real-time in the likes of Call Of Duty 4. What VATS allows you to do is effectively pause the game whilst you use your Action Points to queue up specific shots, at several targets if necessary. You then get to see the often gory results of these shots in slow motion. Sam Peckinpah, eat your heart out! Of course, you can run & gun if you like, but you'll then miss out on the 'bullet time' effects and most likely be left wondering why you're running out of ammo and dying so quickly.

There's a whole lot more to say about the game, but I don't want to spoil anyone's enjoyment of discovering it for themselves.

If you're a fan of the tightly-scripted, relentlessly fast & furious action and the online play of the likes of COD4 then you may find Fallout 3 frustrating, but if you're looking for a wide-open next-gen rpg and don't mind the 18 rating for 'strong bloody violence and gore' then look no further.

5 out of 5 stars Love It   November 9, 2008

I just have to start out by saying this is quickly becoming my favourite PS3 game. Also I hated Oblivion, it bored the hell out of me and i thought the combat in it was terrible and although the similarities in these games are obvious Fallout 3 is just a much improved funner version. I love the conversation in it i think it is very detailed, giving you loads of options to choose from and the music in it is brilliant. I'm pretty much addicted to that 'i dont want to set the world on fire' song. The fighting in it has also been improved greatly. Using V.A.T (i think thats what its called) to blow off someones head is hilarious. This game is also huge i've done two side quests, one where you have to deliver a letter to a womans missing brother and one were you have to find a scientists android, and a tiny bit of the main game and i've been playing for about 10 hours now. I've got just one thing against this game. I hate autosave, in any game, it drives me crazy im always terrified it's going to autosave the second before a bullent tunnels its way through my skull. But apart from this minor inconvenience this game is brilliant. Don't be put off if you didn't like Oblivion it is a million times better than it. 5 stars.
