Valkyria Chronicles is set in a fictitious continent reminiscent of 1930s Europe - divided in two and ruled by the Empire and the Federation. The Empire has set its sights on invading a small neutral country called Gallia, which is situated in the middle of the two great empires. The game follows a hero named Welkin and his fellow soldiers of the Federation's 7th Platoon as they engage in a series of epic battles. Built upon the new "CANVAS" engine, developed internally by SEGA Game Studios Japan, Valkyria Chronicles' stunning 3D graphics resemble a watercolor painting in motion, taking full advantage of the processing capabilities of the PLAYSTATION 3. The power of the PLAYSTATION 3 also allows the development team to exploit the full potential of this new engine, giving players many different stunning environments to explore. A new type of tactical battle mechanic has been specifically designed for Valkyria Chronicles. Known as "BLiTZ," this gives players freedom to strategically move around the environment and attack enemies using real-time controls, something never before seen in the tactical role-playing game genre. The new "CANVAS" engine technology, the "BLiTZ" battle concept and an epic storyline offers players hours of exciting gameplay.

Unique single player game; could do with multiplayer November 3, 2008 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Having played the very short demo, I was intrigued enough to buy this game and after a few hours of play, I can safely say that the game itself is a justifiable purchase.
Set in a made-up country called Gallia, you are charged with the defence of this tiny peace-loving province in the face of overwhelming odds. The game starts simply enough giving you an idea of the combat mechanincs, effectively holding your hand as you learn the ropes. Each character is assigned a class (Scout, Shocktrooper, Sniper, Lancer, Engineer etc) with specific strengths and weaknesses that you use to your advantage on the battlefield. Each class has a set amount of Action Points that acts as a timer for you to get to where you want to go (preferably moving to cover) and one action command (i.e. shoot, bombs) per turn. You physically move your squadron into position in a third person view and you decide when and who they target, but it is very much a strategy game, so you have to consider who you're fighting and best way to outflank the enemy. It is not as in-depth as something like Command & Conquer, but the strategy element mixed with conventional RPG levelling up (XP and tech points gained during combat and skirmishes) helps to create a unique experience that is a breath of fresh air.
Assigning your XP and tech points is done at HQ via a separate section which you can access in between story chapters and battles and works by simply assigning points to each particular class. You can also upgrade weapons in each class and improve Welkin's tank, the Edelweiss, depending on how many points you have acquired. It is very straight forward to newcomers to RPGs and second nature to more experienced RPGers. You get more XP in battle, but you are free to take part in Skirmishes (accessed via the menu in story mode) at any time which will allow you to grind your way to more XP.
If you are not a fan of turn based games, then this may not be for you, but it does play differently to most turn based games. I would recommend downloading the demo via PSN because even though it's short, you'll get a good idea of what to expect. Graphically, it looks like a Manga film, the cell-shading style is a worthy advert for the PS3 and the game play is fun and absorbing as well. The only reason why this loses a mark is simply bacuase there is no multiplayer element. This game is screaming out for co-op campaign or multiplayer online skirmishes, but as a stand alone single player game, I would wholeheartedly recommend this one if you can break away from LittleBigPlanet.
