Amazon.co.uk Call of Duty returns, and to many people’s surprise, it’s going back to World War II. While original series creators Infinity Ward brought the series into the modern day, developer Treyarch are setting out to make the definitive historical first-person shooter. The Soviet attack on Berlin features intense street battles | Take on the Japanese navy as you board a U.S. flying boat | World at War features the most realistic fire effects ever | The new ability to swim adds to both the story and multiplayer modes | The game is primarily set in the Pacific theatre and has a much more realistic, violent tone requiring less-linear game play than previous Call of Duty installments. You'll struggle to survive Japanese attacks without mastering new gaming skills, like swimming or how to use a flamethrower--a weapon that packs some punch in the fully destructable game world. Also featured is a campaign on the Eastern front, where you take control of a soldier in the Soviet Red Army during the attack on Berlin in the closing stages of the war. The game also includes the series’ first co-op mode, while the competitive multiplayer mode aims to build upon the achievements of Call of Duty 4 and add to the game’s longevity. Key Features - Dual campaigns: Fight in two very different World War II battles. Take on the Japanese Imperial army in the Pacific, and liberate Berlin as part of the Soviet Red Army.
- Grim realities: Experience the most bloody and realistic combat ever seen in the series, as you witness enemy atrocities and wield horrific new weapons such as the flamethrower.
- Job with benefits: Revamped competitive multiplayer mode features useable vehicles and an expanded perks system from Call of Duty 4.
- Brothers in arms: For the first time, a Call of Duty game features a four-player co-operative mode that’s playable online or via a split screen option on the same console.
- Modern graphics: The game uses an enhanced version of the Call of Duty 4 graphics engine, with wood that splinters realistically when shot and fires that spread organically.
About the Developer: Treyarch One of publisher Activision’s biggest internal studios, Treyarch have worked on many of the company’s best known titles, from the Spider-Man movie tie-ins and spin-offs to several of the Call of Duty sequels and the new James Bond game, Quantum of Solace.

ill informed people making judgement far too early November 15, 2008 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I had the beta version but thought it wise to reserve my judgement till the game was released. This game is brilliant in every way, it differs from the first three (that are also based on WWII)in lots of ways. The type of missions are more akin to COD4, for example sniper based missions. I have never been the biggest fan of the first three and to be honest was apprehensive about COD 5 as the previous game was absolutley amazing. This game is just as good and just as involving, the multiplayer coop is a welcome addition especially for those missions that can be quite testing on Veteran difficulty and treyarch have done a great job in the provision of weapon attachments, for example i was a big fan of the red dot sight, this game has a WWII alternative, its great its brill so dont be put off by cod4 fanboys who have not even played the game.
World War II graphically portrayed. November 19, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
After all the negative comments regarding a it being a step back after COD 4 and people saying no more WWII shooters , it was a pleasant and not unwelcome experience to pick up this game and be stunned by the playing experience online and solo. I went through the game itself in three sittings and am still vividly in shock at some of the scenarios that unfolded. Don't misunderstand me, this is the war as it was, brutal, shocking, profane and mind numbing. I'm not going to spoil it for anybody but certain scenes are brilliantly done, and bring home the staggering events that really took place. Is it still relevant? Damn right it is. The graphics, sound, dialogue and sheer spectacle are the best yet. Online the game is totally addictive, I loved COD 4 online but even at this early stage I think this experience tops it. You won't regret getting this game. THEY HAVE RELEASED THE DOGS!!!!

Well I am one of the lucky ones also to have got the beta version and it is as the other review said fantastic great atmosphere great graphics and basicaly like playing cod 4 so really easy to pick up. What all these fools keep on about cod 6 for is beyond me they obviously haven't played it !!!! Oh and another thing having played this how nice it is to not have the noise of the xbox disc going round so am looking forward to the new dashboard with the ability to download game to the hardrive.

Stunning. This is the most intense WW2 experience short of the war itself. Brilliant. Ignore the beta-reviews. Buy this game...
The best First Person shooter i have ever played November 16, 2008 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
i've been playing games for over 20 years and while i know that doesn't mean i know best i can safely say this game is the BEST i have ever played!
Although made by a different company it follows COD4's course in both multiplayer and single player mode.
Multiplayer - Think COD4 with the original game modes and points system, new guns and new maps, the maps are stunning, very vast with mixed landscapes creating an entire new experience eachtime you play a map. I was expecting the guns to be harder to use but it is NOT the case, being WWII theres no ACOG scopes or dot sights, instead there are weapon attachments such as glass sights, bipods, bayonets etc etc. Instead of UAV you have a Reconissance Aircraft Instead of Air Strikes with 5 kills you call in Artillary Strikes Instead of Helicopter with 7 kills you call in Hounds/Dogs (Brilliant!!)
Basically it is every bit as good as COD4 online if not better!
Single Player - reasonably linear gameplay here but certainly not dissimilar to COD4. the sound and graphics are absolutly amazing and the gameplay is deeply intense thorwing you into huge armies which you you have to fight through very aggressively.... i could go on and on but put bluntly it is completely mental! i would recommend this game to anyone at all, if you fancy yourself as a hardcore gamer then up the difficulty and i garantee it will make you tired!
