Phoenix returns to another famous victory January 17, 2007 27 out of 30 found this review helpful
Phoenix Wright returns to the DS after a year's absence. This time round, he's no longer a rookie defense attorney. Instead, having achieved some seemingly impossible victories in the courtroom last time round, he's now quite a celebrity. Which is why, when a policewoman is charged with murdering his fiance, she turns to Wright for help. Unfortunately, just before the trial, he was attacked by an unknown assailant. He wakes up with amnesia, and is then pushed straight into court to fight the case. An impossible case again, perhaps? Not exactly, because by examining every piece of evidence, pressing every statement from the witnesses, and pinpointing every contradiction that are present, the ace attorney has return to yet another famous victory.
The above basically sums up Phoenix Wright's premise. Justice for All, which begins soon after the end of last season's sleeper hit, employs primarily the same gameplay features from its predecessor. The game is still divided into two parts - investigation and trial. During investigation, you will still go from place to place, talk to NPCs, and gather clues. During trial, you will still press witnesses, present evidence and, more often than not, bluff your way through. Nothing really changes here when it comes to the basic nature of the gameplay.
Capcom does attempt to make things a little more varied though with the new, but rather tedious "Psyche-Lock" system. This time round, secrets that are guarded by NPCs (even your allies) are typified by on-screen locks. These prevent important conversations from happening. You will need to gather enough information before you can unlock these Psyche-Locks. A wrong deduction will expectedly lead to loss in health, even during the investigation stages. This is a change from the previous game, in which you could only get "hurt" in court. The system is not exactly bad, since it does make the game more challenging. But it also slows the game down, and adds more backtracking efforts to a game that is already filled with various backtracking requirements.
To complement the Psyche-Lock system, your health in Justice for All is also changed from the "Five-Exclamation Marks" bar to a more conventional health bar - something that you usually see in most action adventure games. Now, this is definitely a good move, even though the exclamation marks present more uniqueness. The good thing with this new health bar is that damage taken is varied. Some mistakes will hit you minimally; while others may totally wipe out your health (beware!). On top of that, you can also recover loss health by successfully unlocking a Psyche-Lock. Ah, now you know why I said that it complements the Psyche-Lock.
The fun in Phoenix Wright is not restricted to the gameplay, of course. Interactions with quirky characters are part and parcel of the investigation and court proceedings. In this instalment, you will take on clowns, magicians, and even a radio transceiver. Many of these encounters provide great comic relief. Especially the one with the clown, but I will leave that to you to find out. The game also features returning casts from the previous game - those interested in the Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth sub-plot will be happy to know that he has a major role to play in the intense finale of the game.
On the topic of intensity, you may also want to know that Justice for All has a much more compelling story than its predecessor. Even though it doesn't have a bonus case like the last game, the cases are generally longer here, which more or less compensate for the absence. Murderers are also smarter, more ruthless, and will continue to frustrate you through well-constructed lies. These generate a great sense of competitive tension - if you're the emotional type, you may find yourself totally immersed into the game's universe. The final case, in particular, will test your resilience as well as your conscience. The only gripe is that some parts of the game are a little too draggy. It's almost as if these moments are lengthened just for the sake of lengthening the game.
In conclusion, Justice for All is another great entry in the Phoenix Wright series. It doesn't rock too much of a steady boat, and prefers to focus on its strength of delivering a deep and compelling murder mystery. Fans of the adventure genre would better gear themselves up for another round of sleepless nights as they engage to solve these murders. As for those who haven't played the previous game, I'd suggest picking that up first to fully appreciate the story in this one.
Originality Rules!!!! April 20, 2007 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
I bought this game out of curiosity, wondering if a game where you are a defence lawyer would be any good. I played through the first trial with great enthusiasm as the game has very intuitive controls and it is surprsingly fun to shout objection and hold it!!!! I find the cases are very decent in length and are very fun to play. I love pointing out the contradictions in the witnesses testament adn then smiling smugly as they sweat and look flabberghasted!!!
Overall i think this a fantastic game. ~Just FAB-ULO-SO~ (It is from the second case. Very funny)!!!!!!!
Wow wow wow, this game is SO good!!! February 27, 2007 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I'm absolutely addicted to the first Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney game and had high hopes for the sequel! And it's brilliant! There are 4 new excellent cases, i especially liked the one set in a circus! The new 'psyche lock' feature is great, it makes the whole investigation side of it more fun! This game is a must buy for anyone, it's got brilliant witty dialogue, addictive storylines and lots of unexpected twists and turns! Perfect!!!
He's always Wright March 11, 2007 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
So phoenix wright is back, no longer the amateur defence attourney he once was, although in the first part of the game he certainly acts like it due to a bout of amnesia to aid first timers to the series in gently.
The story basically follows Phoenix through five trials similar to the first where a murder takes place, and it is up to you to uncover the truth of what happened and thus prove that your defendent is innocent. You'll deal with a murder at a circus, a murder that takes place during a channeling, and the murder of a police officer each time gathering evidence and taking a stand in court.
Now graphically, the game is full of still pictures, even though the character animations are usually well-drawn, detailed and full of life. The locations are always varied, even if some are a little dull like an almost empty room except for some rubbish in the corner, but everwhere is relevant. The sound compliments the game well, with memorable tunes filling the game that will leave you humming them throughout the week.
Lets talk about the gameplay which is essentially broken into two parts. In court and out of court. Outside of court you'll talk to eyewitnesses, you'll look for and find evidence to use in court and you'll be able to use the new psyc-lock mode to uncover extra pieces of information. Basically using a special stone, you have to use evidence to unlock their secrets. However, if you mess up, you'll find yourself damaged. Also new to the game is the profile system where you have information about each character which you can also present in and out of court to people.
In court, little has changed. You basically tear holes in the witnesses statements by showing evidence that contradicts what they're saying. For instance, when it asks you to show evidence as to a motive for the killing of the first person, you'll show a profile. Sorry I'm being really unspecific, but I'd rather give nothing away as part of the joy (and pain) is to find the evidence that fits. Again, false information can damage you and lead to game over. You can use the mic system to squeam objection at false information in statements which can be satisfying, but others might find you crazy.
Downsides. Hefty dialogue and long sections. Thankfully though, you can save anywhere to save further killing yourself. Some of it can be quite dull. If your a fan of murder and mystery, or you liked the first game, this is an excellent purchase, and it still feels quite original. However, if you hate lengthy dialogue and you don't like non-action based games, this isn't for you.
i'm in love June 23, 2007 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I absolutely can not stress how brilliant this game is. I have the first Phoenix Wright and fell in love with that game, and i bought the 2nd and wondered if it would be as good as the 1st since it didn't have 5 cases and only 4. I didn't need to worry, it's just as brilliant. The cases last long too, although the first was quite short the rest werent. And the last one was my favourite, just when you thought it was all over, some new twist would happen to truly shock you and leave you playing for a while yet. All the cases were superbly written, and oh so clever.
New characters like Maya's cousin Pearl and Proscecuter Franziska Von Karma, are brilliant additions. And it's the silly things in the game that make it brilliant too, like Von Karma's desire for whipping everyone in court. You wouldn't get that in real life, but it doesn't matter because it's so great and funny. And old faces like Detective Gumshoe, who is always hilarious, and the handsome Miles Edgeworth well they are great. And yes, I just called a computer character handsome but he is!
This game makes you feel like you are there and you truly begin to care about the characters and it feels like a little family, everyone cares for each other. Some people might call this sad, but who cares. I just love this game so much, i'm gonna play the 1st all over again. I can't wait for the third Phoenix Wright, but that's a while off yet in the U.K
Please buy this game, your life will be so much better for it!
