Brilliant Fun August 1, 2007 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
I cannot describe how much I love this game- it's like playing a real guitar added with the fact it trains on on the different strings. The main screen is the same as the stings on the guitar and the shoulder buttons are the cords- you can strum the 'screen' like a real guitar and change the tone/tune by using the cords (shoulder buttons and d-pad) it also sounds like a real guitar if you plug in a small speaker into the headphone jack - you might even want to try busking in the underground ! The Demo i played came pre-loaded with a bunch of tracks (real songs) so i had a crack at playing along to Bob Marely (No Woman No Cry)- it takes you step by step on how to play then it your turn which is great fun especially when you got a partner singing with you. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys there music and even for anyone who wants to learn to play a guitar by doesn't want to pay for expensive lessons.

Great For Guitarist, For nubz? September 29, 2007 6 out of 12 found this review helpful
I play real guitar myself, and have been for about 6 months. i get lesons and have just started making my own solos. Unfortunatly, my brother plays bass so i have noone to play cords for me as i play my solos, so i thought i'll use this as my second guitarist.
Enough about me, the game is an amazing game. It has over 200 real chords, though u nomaly only use major's and minor's. If you play guitar, and have a good nolage of chords for songs, this game is ur portably guitar that fits in your pocket. it also has a bit where you try and work out the chords, so u can try and work out chords of songs.
if you dont play guitar, this is still a great game. My friend got it and loves locking on the internet for chords of his song and then playing them.
More about me, i have a band, and last night, for fun, i played the rthem for american idiot, as the rest of them play it for real. It sounded fine, and with a bit of destorion, which u can do in the game, sounds amazing. One time on stage, ill probably play along on the ds, just for fun.
All in all, this is an amazing game, but has no objective. good or bad, its a guitarist must-have, and a non-guitarist toy.
This is no "Guitar Hero" - It's a real instrument ! December 1, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is not "Guitar Hero" on a DS. In fact this is not even a game. There might be a few songs to play along with (not that you'll ever have heard of most of them) but this section of the package is light-weight and poorly implemented.
No this is a real instrument! It might sound a bit quiet - but connect it up to a real amp, get a few songs with the chords written out, and you'll be playing along like a real Guitar Hero.
Effects like Distortion and Phasing are hidden away in there for different sounds.
Not convinced? Just search on YouTube for videos of people playing this thing at live gigs!
Portable guitar has some let downs, but a great learning aid! October 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am a musician having studied for five years and achieving BA. I have always love the guitar and been envious of others being able to play one so easy. I bought Jam sesions second hand as i'd heard mixed reviews about it. The first point to be made is this is not a game. It has been said many times but people still think it's a game! It turns the ds into a tool, so hard core gamers are out.
First, what i liked. I liked the set up menu, which states where everything is. I like the backgrounds and strings you can chose (some are said to be unlockable but they were all there), and the range of popular songs are great- Avril Lavigne to Coldplay. I was pleased i mastered Coldplay's yellow! These can be easily youtubed if you're not sure how they go, which is convinient! I loved how there was a real guitar sound- it was beautiful! It really did sound like an accoustic! One of my fave bits is the ear training. My only regret is i didn't discover this last year as it would have come in handy! Others have also complained about the sound level- this is meant to be played in a quiet area, and if you need it louder, there are cables available for you to hook it up to an amp, and it sounds fab though one of those! There are also sound effects which can be added, which will please guitarists who like effects. Some have also complained about how long you can record on it for, but remember it is a cartridge so it can only hold so much info at one time, and it is meant to be a notebook for ideas, so perfect for riffs and licks, but not so good for full songs.
Okay, the downsides. Like i said before, this isn't a game, so it will put some people off. Some have said there are no objectives but i disagree in one way- you have to complete one level before moving onto the next in ear training, which means you have to go through all of it. What you learn is great and i found myself recognising chords. However, it would have been nice if it only allowed you to do so much a day, so you had something to look forward to (but i may feel like this because everything was unlocked on mine in the first place). There should be an erase option, so if you decide to sell it, you don't have other's people's progress and you can discover the lockables yourself (again, coming from a second hand game!). One of the main problems was the songs- most were in spanish so most would have never heard of them. I understand why they have them on there- to work on strumming, but two or three would have been enough, not 15! Also, i could easily scroll down to the end of the song, strum one chord and get applause- not the ideal thing really! More popular songs would have been a better turn on. I did ahave a slight problem with the strumming- when going up sometimes, it wouldn't pick it up which is a bit of a pain.
Overall, it's a fantastic idea. I would recomend this tool for people who are learning and play guitar and for those studying music as it will really help with chord identification. For other gamers, i don't think this will be suitable. If you are thinking of getting it, get it second hand and save some money. If there will be a sequal, i will wait a while, and hope that they resolve the problems in this game.
