5 out of 5 stars Not before time   April 14, 2008

I'm not sure why we had to wait so long for a collection like this - it's an obvious concept for the DS. Contrary to what is stated elsewhere, there are rules given for all games, often allowing variants at the player's discretion. For those who care about such things there are many card backs and backgrounds available, and a list of background music (if you have it on at all, keep it low, as most of it can be profoundly irritating). There are also stats of performance, for those who feel a need for such things. The mixture is well-chosen, although I imagine that any regular players of patience (I'm of a generation who thinks of 'solitaire' as something involving shuffling little pegs around) is bound to find one or two of their personal favourites omitted. The difficulty of the games varies from the virtually mechanical to those requiring a high level of logical card manipulation, and from those that are always soluble (I'm told that Freecell is one of these, and am inclined to believe it) to the 'so unlikely to come out as to be impossible'. The depiction of the cards is rather primitive - more Touchmaster than 42 Games - but this is soon forgotten as one becomes involved in the play. Excellent value - after all, the number of variations for each deal is (for mortals) infinite, and a devotee will come back to the game again and again. Think of it as an investment which will be well repaid over the years.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant and addictive!   July 1, 2008

This is a terrific compendium of solitaire games, and so addictive that I have charged my DS, run it down and continued playing while it was charging in one sitting!

There are a lot of games included, with a variety of options to alter some of the rules, so your favourite is bound to be here. The games do sometimes have names that I don't recognise, but there is a lot of fun to be had in going through them all and finding your favourite.

Many of the games are fairly similar, but then that's solitaire! Because the cards are drawn differently every time you just never get bored!

The only (very small) criticism is that on some of the large layout games, the cards can be a little small. If someone had poor vision it could be quite hard. But for the majority I would say it is fine. You do also get used to the slider at the side of the very long chains of cards, it doesn't bother me at all now.

Buy it! You won't want to play anything else!

5 out of 5 stars great time waster   July 27, 2008

I love playing the 'spider' game on the PC, so I thought this game package would be fairly suitable for me. Now, you DO have to like plain, good old fashioned, card games - you can change the patten on the card back, but that's as flash as it gets! No animation - none of the 'blood and gore' that princelet seems to like in his games (thank goodness!), just plain old cards doing - well - card stuff.

There are over 100 - yes 100 - patience card games - and you don't have to spend hours dealing them out (yipee!). You will heard of some of the games- but with this many - very few. Lots of them are similar - that's the nature solitaire - but there are big differences between some of the 'families' of groups, and there is certainly loads to explore.

It took me a few goes to work out how to load a game, and I have to say that not all the 'how to play' the game instructions are fully clear (even that that took me a while to find): but all that is probably me, wanting to get on and fiddle! I have still have not found a 'hint' button - so you have to keep an eye on it all.

Some games I had a couple of goes at and moved on - and some I wanted to 'just one more' etc, until I REALLY, REALLY HAD to go and sort out dinner. I am not sure how you are supposed to remember which you prefer and which you don't, I guess that comes with practising them all! (As if).

This game package is great for keeping you sane, when you have to pass the time, comfortably. If you have to spend hours on trains/plains, - or are ill / resting / recovering, or want something to pass the afternoon on beaches / in gardens, then this is the one to stop you going totally 'snow crazy'.Now, you won't achieve anything with these games - all you do is pass the time: all be it in a fun way, and as long as you realise that you have to enjoy simple patience card games - then this game will keep you hooked for hours.

I just love it and it will keep me occupied for ages.

5 out of 5 stars A must for card game lovers...   September 6, 2008

I gave this to my 76 year old mother (with a new DS) a few weeks ago, and I've not seen her since!

She's addicted. (And now understands why teenage boys crowd round computer game consoles in shops!)

There's a huge choice of Solitaire games, almost too many to keep track of what you've tried etc. I wish they would bring something like this out with over a 100 word games. If you like card games, you will like this - a bargain for the price.

5 out of 5 stars Addictive!   August 8, 2008
As with another reviewer - why did we have to wait for so long! This game is addictive! Totally! Loads of different games for all ages! Love this game!
