5 out of 5 stars More of the same Ace Attorney goodness   May 16, 2008

If you enjoyed the three Phoenix Wright games you'll enjoy this. It's more of exactly the same - investigation followed by trial, followed by further investigation and more trial. There are the usual infuriating moments when you can't work out what to do next, but that's all part of the fun.

I don't want to give too much away, but you might get a shock from the opening couple of cases. Don't worry, because everything is resolved in the end, and you learn to like the new characters as much as the old ones. I really liked the fact that each of the cases is linked together - it all forms one coherent story (in a way that the PW games only partly managed to achieve)

Only complaint is that, like the very first PW game, you can't present suspects as evidence, but Apollo has new skills that make up for that...

Can't wait for the next game in the series, set to feature Miles Edgeworth as Ace Prosecutor....!

5 out of 5 stars fantastic great improvment lots of characters and twists   June 10, 2008
i have followed all of these games and was a bit dubious when i seen a new title but hey am amazed different characters, harder trials, and a lot more intresting ,and as the chapters go on it does test youre skills !and abilities! but well worth the effort will be sitting in anticipation for the sequel, graphics great and twists and plots intriguing!! huge enjoyment and some frustrtion trying to piece it all together but you will understand when you play!!!!!!! happy gaming

4 out of 5 stars It's what you'd expect, if you've played the other games   May 18, 2008

The Ace Attorney (Phoenix Wright) series is back, but this time with a new protagonist: the entertainingly named Apollo Justice. If you're thinking that's a sign that the game takes itself too seriously, fear not: one of the first things the game does is make fun of the titular character's name.

So, this is pretty much in line with the rest of the Phoenix Wright series: a bit of point-and-click graphical adventure (investigation) alongside a logic/mystery game (court), with some arbitrary wackiness thrown in. Also like its predecessors, all the cases are tied together (albeit somewhat flimsily) in the last one.

If, like me, you really wanted to see the characters from previous games, fret not: an older Phoenix hangs around in the background throughout, and you actually do get to play as him (bumping into Detective Gumshoe along the way - but sadly not Maya, Pearl or the spectral Mia) in the last case. However, overwhelmingly (the exceptions being the judge and Ema Skye) the characters are all new. This is actually a good thing, as the new bunch seem to be better drawn and more interesting. The music is mostly new, but not the best in the series.

The gimmick this time round is the ability to read body language in some sections to detect lies (for the plot, this makes no sense, but it's still interesting): this manifests as a "focus" on an area you can select while the testimony continues in slow motion. Once you spot the aberrant behaviour (fiddling, sweating, whatever), you tap a button, and Apollo crows about his new discovery, somehow resulting in the witness telling the truth. It's both a fun mechanic and a frustrating one: it's enjoyable to spot the giveaway, but it can be rather time-consuming to find it in the first place.

Like the extra case tacked on the end of DS "Phoenix Wright" 1, you get to play a bit with forensic tools, though it always seems like arbitrary gameplay, as you pretty much have to discover the evidence in question first. Other than that, the DS' features seem rather underused: the primary UI is still rather GBA-like.

The last (of four) case in this game is a bit special: in a fancy computer-like interface, you get to go through some "past" and "present" areas in a kind of investigation phase. For this, the navigation UI at least seems much nicer (no travelling to one location to allow travel to another), and you get to interactively explain what Phoenix was doing in the intervening seven years, albeit with some Back-To-The-Future style logic flaws. Though this section of the game is relatively short, it's heavy on the exposition, which makes it pretty pleasant if you've been trying to work out what had happened.

The game definitely has its flaws: there are the usual bits where you can pick to cite some evidence which you know is relevant but the game doesn't want, however the game is more forgiving of this in general than its predecessors. There are also a few stumpers which require you to know something that the game has not clearly conveyed - for example, a word in blood which has actually been smudged rather than sloppily written. Finally, of course, there's very little replay value.

Overall, the game is quite well-produced and eminently fun to play. If you like mysteries or graphical adventures at all, it's worth a go; just be prepared to google for a walkthrough in case you need it.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised   August 24, 2008

I was pessimistic about this game when i heard of its existence, i was in denial over the discontinuation of Phoenix Wright so i didn't want to get it. I changed my mind later and bought it upon its release. Though i prefer the character of Phoenix to Apollo, the game is actually very good. The first proper release of an Ace Attorney game for the Nintendo DS (the Phoenix Wright games were originally GBA games in Japan), thus the graphics are improved. Great new characters, and the music sustains the same sort of brilliance as the Phoenix series (i particularly like Klavier Gavin's 'Guilty Love'). Gripping plot with a fantastic conclusion that keeps me looking forward to the next Apollo game.

However, i find that the characters do not have quite so much depth as the ones encountered in the Phoenix games - it feels like the characters have all been stuffed into this first Apollo game too quickly. Klavier Gavin for instance is perhaps too likeable too soon as your rival prosecutor, whereas Miles Edgeworth from the Phoenix Wright series was a tough cookie to crack and had to 'work', if you will, for your affections later in the game. I sincerely doubt that a re-appearance of Klavier in a later game could ever match the enthusiastic rejoicing of seeing Miles again in the Phoenix series. Apollo Justice as a character does not seem all that different from Phoenix Wright in my opinion. Nor is Trucy that different from Maya.

Instead of the magatama from the Phoenix games (with the ability to see into people's souls to tell if they are hiding something from you), here you have a special bracelet that can focus in on a characters nervous habits that hints to their concealing something or lying. It is a nice change, making great use of the DS's abilities, and is a fresh addition to this new series of the Ace Attorney games.

Really good game, i thoroughly enjoyed it and am happy to have been proven wrong concerning the individual quality of the game. Also a nice little reference to 'The Police' (as in the band), so if you're a fan of Sting and The Police, its a very nice amusing touch.
If you have not noticed that Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations is being released, and you have the two previous Phoenix Wright games, get Trials and Tribulations first. It does not necessarily make any contribution in plot to Apollo Justice, but for the sake of continuity, it is better in my opinion that the full Phoenix series be played before you move on to Apollo. I look forward to the next one, but moreso i am looking forward to Miles Edgeworth: Perfect Prosecutor!

4 out of 5 stars Really not half bad.   November 18, 2008

I am by no means an expert on the DS or the Phoenix Wright series; in fact this is the first DS game I have bought on my first handheld console, but for what it's worth, I found it to be a very engaging and enjoyable game.

The graphics are slick and (compared to the flash-back play scenes) much better looking. For each trial you gain quite a large amount of evidence, some pieces more useful than others. In fact, some pieces are all but red herrings, which can be a bit irksome but only adds to the realism of the game.

Unless you cheat, there is some emphasis on using your brain to get through the cases as it's not always obvious where it's heading, which leads me onto the main flaw of the game. It's intelligent, but sadly can't always keep up with a human brain (as i hear, the previous games couldn't). Once or twice I had a key point figured from the beginning of a case, but if i presented the relevant evidence too soon (even when it seemed possible), it was disregarded as 'Apollo' wasn't keeping up.

One especially nice feature, however, are the random little in-jokes. I won't spoil it all, but as another reviewer mentioned, the game doffs it's hat off to Sting, and there's plenty more like that in there for a good laugh, if you can spot them!

Apollo's special ability is a good use of the DS's abilities, and I like it because it's fairly realistic. Admittedly it can seem odd that simply finding the flaw can make a witness spill the beans, but eh, frankly i don't care. It's Japanese in origin, and from what I can gather, that's a stereotype of legal matters in Japan. In-game you also learn various skills from Ema Skye, which are also fun and use different DS functions. You can also save at any point, which is immensely useful if you're not sure what to present next and you're running low on life.

Most of the characters are fairly cartoonish in personality, but nearly all manage to be likable. I for one, will look forward to any re-appearance of the camp, purple-loving, euro vision-wannabe prosecutor.

All in all, it's honest to goodness fun, and you can't really go too wrong with it if you want a light-hearted point and click game that might challenge you to think a bit.
