Amazon.co.uk Review

The greatest battle of the new football season is not between any real world club but between the virtual giants of FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer. Konami's game has always been the favourite but last year FIFA closed the gap to such a degree that the title race has never been closer. This year's FIFA uses a completely new game engine, for the first time built specifically for the next gen consoles. But improved graphics and animation are only the half of it, with just as much focus going on the artificial intelligence thanks to the new "35 point decision engine". What this basically means is that every player on the pitch is fully aware of those around him and constantly thinking about tactics and position when not under your control.

Other changes include better modelled physics for taking a shot on goal, which take into account everything from air pressure to the angle of your foot. You're also able to create your own special moves to replicate every possible trick from real life. There are also new game modes including Be A Pro which challenges you to play the role of a single player through a whole season or career. On top of this there are revamped online leagues to play a virtual season in the Premier League, Bundesliga, French League or Mexican 1st Division against real opponents. With 620 licensed teams, 30 offline leagues and 15,000 players as well FIFA might just have made enough new signings this year to put it over the top.

5 out of 5 stars The art of perfection   September 29, 2007

Well done EA sports. At last you produced a game worth challenging & outdoing pro evolution. I nearly didnt buy the game because of all the bad press other reviewers gave the demo. But hey a demo is a demo. I intended to rent both pro evolution (when it comes out) and Fifa & buy whichever one was best. But they had it on in game yesterday & i had a go & it looked so good. Needless to say i ended up buying it. I couldnt stop. Very difficult but brilliant. And the graphics are amazing. Commentary is excellent & better reacts to the actual gameplay instead of the same lines over and over. But hey with all the licenses aswell it is thee game. The great thing about this next gen game on PS3 for us customers is it ups the bar in terms of football simulation. Fifa have set a marker. The competition to better it has begun. Hopefully pro evolution will in October. If your a Fifa fan buy it - if your a pro evo fan also buy it - you wont be disappointed

5 out of 5 stars a pleasant suprise   September 29, 2007

well lets set the record straight. i'm a pes fan, and always have been. this makes what i am about to tell you all the more brilliant. fifa have finally figured out how to produce a decent game. yes folks, its taken them a decade to do it, but finally it has arrived.
fifa 08 is by far the best fifa ever, for a simple reason...its fun!
i found all other fifa games dull and lifeless, but fifa 08 is excellent.
the graphics are outstanding from a distance, but you have to take the close ups with a pinch of salt, as obviously EA have concentrated on other things.
the greatest thing about this game is the new be a pro mode. yes, i know it doesn't have a season mode, but the online is great, and even the offline training has kept me amused for several hours.
the only poor aspect of this otherwise delightful game is the online mode.
i found it difficult to join a custom match and had to resort to constantly choosing the quick match option.
the online leagues are a nice touch though.
all in all i would have to give this game a solid 9 out of 10.

graphics - 8.5
gameplay - 8.5
presentation - 9.5
sound - 10 (great commentary from andy gray and martin tyler)
lasting appeal - 10

5 out of 5 stars Fifa 08 - Finally they did it.   September 28, 2007

Fifa 08 will suprise the usual football simulation fan (and fifa/pro evo fan for that matter). After several years of being a solid pro evo fan and not really taking much interest in fifa, i decided to give the fifa 08 demo a try by downloading it off the playstation store on my ps3. After waiting a good hour or so, i switched the game on and i was stumped, suprised and honestly shocked. The game i had tried to avoid for a while had became awfully addictive within about two seconds of gameplay. i kept on playing and playing (annoyingly, you can only play one half of a game on the demo, so any hint of progress is limited). I was annoyed, i have been waiting for a ps3 football game for months and fifa still wasnt out for at least another few weeks.

A few weeks later, i buy fifa 08 the day it came out (sept 28th) expecting major dissapointment, convincing myself that this game would be a mess and that i had been tricking myself. I played my first game which was everton v charlton ath. and once again i was stunned, the graphics playability, realism and ball physics where perfect, the attention to detail, even to the teams outside of the "big-four" and champions league looked fantastic, unique player styles and faces. i have not yet seen the "generic" look of a not so important player yet, everyone of them seems different, tweaked from the next, even in teams like barnsley, orlando pirates etc.

This game is a must buy for any football game fan, or for any fan of realistic games. The best so far and extremely heavy competition for this years pro evo, they'll have to work hard.

Thanks for reading.

Like most fifa fans i have had 28th September in my calander waiting for fifa 08 to be released all year and i can say im not dissapointed. It just keeps geting better! This years has got all the stuff from last year and more but with more realism.

If like me you've been waiting for a mix between fifas licences and graphics and pro evos gameplay then this is the nearest there has ever been.

5 out of 5 stars A huge step-up   September 30, 2007

I started playing footy games way back when (actually started with Kick-off '96 :) ) and from Fifa '97 I played the EA titles 'til well into the noughties. Then all my mates started playing PES 4 and after a few hours of crossing instead of shooting (very frustrating!) I realised how much better PES really was. Since then I have always bought PES over FIFA, but have tried each new version of FIFA only to be left disappointed each year.
This year it is very different!
I actually bought this years version, one because of the earlier release date and two, just to see what the 'be a pro' mode is all about. Boy am I glad I made the purchase, yes there are faults - the passing is a little unresponsive, as is the first-time shooting from medium height crosses, but all-in-all FIFA 08 is better than any PES so far. It did take a while to get used to, but I would urge all die-hard PESers to give it a proper go - three or four games in and you'll soon begin to realise how good this product is.
So - the gameplay is now better than PES6 (looking forward to the new one!), couple this with all the old advantages FIFA always had (loads of players, kits, stadiums, better commentators, big-match feel and much better online options) and you can see why the developers at Konami must be looking over their shoulders.

My recommendation - buy this game!
