Amazon.co.uk Preview From the makers of Far Cry comes the most technologically advanced video game ever made, with graphics to make you gasp and enemy artificial intelligence so clever it could give SkyNET a run for its money. With Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 now well established, Crysis has become the new milestone for PC graphics and first person shoot `em-ups. The premise of the game involves an alien landing on an island off North Korea, with you as the only person that can stop it. The incredibly realistic looking environments are the game's initial draw, with some particularly stunning looking jungle locales. All the levels include dynamic effects to make them even more realistic (and dangerous) including earthquakes, breaking ice, landslides and tornadoes. Since the alien decides to flash freeze the entire island half way through the game, and the final sections end up in a zero gravity spaceship, it's unlikely you're going to get tired of the same old environments. As in Far Cry, there's no strict level structure and you're able to explore the island however you want; choosing to go in all guns blazing or taking a more stealthy approach. You can also customise your weapons to suit your preferred style of play with silencers, telescopic sights, laser sightings and more. Your special armour can also be modified as you go, so that you make less noise as you move, run faster, jump higher, recover energy or just take damage better and make use of heavier weapons. Naturally the game also includes an extensive multiplayer mode, but it is the stunning, near photorealistic, graphics and game world which is most certain to claim the game's name in PC gaming history. Possibly the Game of the Year November 13, 2007 117 out of 136 found this review helpful
Crysis has been one of the most watched and most talked about games for the last few years. It promised to be the best looking game ever made, and it promised to deliver a deeper, richer and more engrossing first person shooter experience than its pseudo-predecessor FarCry. And it managed both.
It's probably impossible to review Crysis without spending great lengths talking about how good the game looks. So I'm going to get it out of the way first. Crysis looks amazing. If you have something like an 8800gts and a couple gigs of ram and a dual core CPU, you can probably play it with everything on high at a good resolution. And in this state, it looks utterly beautiful. The sunsets are breathtaking, the island foliage is gorgeous, the character models are astounding and you will feel like you're experiencing something very special when you play this game.
Right, that's the visuals done and out of the way. So what about the story? You play as a USA supersoldier type (with a fancy high tech suit called a nanosuit), you're part of a team sent to explore why an American team of archaeologists was taking captive by North Koreans just as they were making an important discovery. Things just get better and better from there. Need an example? GIANT ROBOT ALIENS! It's no more of an interesting story than you'll find in your typical FPS game, but it's a pretty solid plot by FPS standards. The game also looks utterly gorgeous, by the way.
The game presents many playstyles through the customisation available. Your weapons can be customised - you can attach and detach silencers and torches, you can switch between different types of scope and you can even use tranquilisers for non-lethal takedowns. Your usual assortment of weapons is in here. And then there's your nanosuit. The nanosuit might just be the best thing about Crysis. It has a small energy bar which drains through use and recharges with rest, meaning you can't use it too often, you have to be selective, which gives for a deeper and more tactical experience. With the suit, you can turn invisible for short periods of time, become super strong, super fast or have super armour.
Just to give an example of how that may play out ingame, you spot a camp up ahead with enemy soldiers patrolling. You drop into stealth and sneak past them to take cover behind a building. Using strength you leap right up on top of the building, then survey the scene from high up, tagging enemies with your binocs so they appear on your radar (just like FarCry). You then use strength to smash open the roof of the building, so you fall inside. Switching to speed, you tear out of the building towards the Koreans, faster than they notice you. You then switch to armour and take down all the enemies at close range with your weapons, while taking reduced damage yourself and also giving them no chance to react or call in reinforcements. And that's just one of the ways you can approach that particular situation. With your tools available, there are many, many other ways you can attack the enemy. Crysis is an extremely deep game when compared with your typical shooter. Oh, and it looks utterly gorgeous, too.
And the AI is utterly wonderful. The North Koreans will take cover, try to suppress and flank you, use grenades creatively, and also check out things that interest them. This is one of the more interesting elements of the AI. They queue up and remember things that happen, then order them by importance. If an enemy sees something rustling in the bushes, he'll come over to check it out. If you thick quick and lob a grenade as a diversion, he'll immediately turn to check it out. But if he doesn't find anything over there (like, for example, you) he'll turn around and resume his original search. It's very refreshing to play a game where the enemies don't just have more health, but are actually smarter. Crysis's AI also facilitates various playstyles, if you want to play the game as a run n gun, the AI will react as you'd expect. Similarly, if you prefer to play the game as a stealthier, the AI will facilitate this, without being specifically designed for either playstyle. Crysis has some awesome AI. The game looks amazing, too.
The style of the game changes quite a lot over the ten or so hours you'll spend playing. The game is split into roughly three acts. The first act takes place in the lush jungle foliage. The second act takes place entirely in zero gravity, where the recoil of firing your weapons will propel you, and spent shell casings float around in the air. It feels like you're underwater. The final act is also on the jungle, but it's been xenoformed by the aliens into an icy jungle - there are some truly epic battles against aliens here. It's quite refreshing to play a game that changes so much over its length, as so many games - especially shooters - tend to stagnate in those final few hours from doing the same thing over and over and over. Crysis does not suffer in this way. The game just keeps on throwing new set pieces and scenarios at you. You never feel like you're playing filler. The game also looks utterly fantastic.
Crysis also features a great sandbox level editor (which is actually pretty easy to use once you get to grips with the basics), and your typical assortment of multiplayer modes. But really, it's the singleplayer experience that shines, and the technology that backs it up. Crysis is probably not the best game of the year, but it is nevertheless a magnificent achievement which every FPS fan or techhead should play. If you like deep, clever shooters then Crysis delivers, if you like fast paced firefights, Crysis delivers. If you like beautiful visuals, astounding technology and magnificent physics, Crysis delivers. Oh, and it looks absolutely beautiful.
Amazing - best game ive ever played February 16, 2008 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
I have a very short attention span with games. I need them fast paced, energewtic with a lot of variety. Crysis has been amazing, really really good. I love the variety of how you can aproach situations, you can do a rambo or a sam fisher - totally up to you. The suit allows this variety by its many funtions. The levels are not repetitive, and its always something new and interesting as you progress. From jungles to large iopen fields to underground caverns....
I really like the combat, and for me is so much better that bioshock or half life. You really need to think what needs to be done. Do you hide behinf the concrete bag and liet youre suit replenish, but with the risk of a grenade or do you run across the clearing firing at will? stuff like that.... Great guns, with some cool features you can add such as different scopes, silencer, laser beam, torch etc....
I will stress you really are missing out if you have it on low graphics.
Graphics - as all may already know this is the most advanced game for looks, and they wernt kidding. It is the best ive seen in a game, and i mean it. So good. the light from the sun through the trees is great, water effects, the faces of the people... etc etc.... all amazing. Its so good looking i wanted to cry (slight exageration) the explosions are gorgeous. When grenades blow the screen goes blurry and theres bit of blood and dirt stuck to the screen. SO SO SO GOOD
What else.... erm, AI is very good. They will use cover, try to flank you and throw grenades etc...
I first played this on a 2000xp, with a nvidia 7500 256 card and 1gb ddr ram. It worked on low graphics, low res ok. Not great frame rate but was playable.
I than bought a intel dual core 3000, and a nvidia 8800gt 512 and 2gb of ddr2 ram. I was hoping for medium graphics on 1000 x 700ish resolution. I was EXTREMELLY HAQPPY to find I copuld put it on high graphics, on a very high resolution and it ran perfectly. This is even with downloads going in the background. Such a massive difference, really made experience more worth while
I cant see why people are moaning about it being so demanding. As I just said it was playable on a quite old 2000xp xhip with a 256 card,- get on ebay and upgrade you tight asses.
Anyway, I only wrote the review cause my hand was hurting from too much crysis playing and had to share my excitement with others.
BACK TO CRYSIS WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
p.s. - Delta difficulty is infact not too hard, Id recomend it to tjhose who know how to play an FPS to get the most from the game, and a challenge..
Peace
CRYTEK HITS ANOTHER HOMERUN!!!! November 3, 2007 30 out of 37 found this review helpful
FAR CRY was one of the best FPS games ever sold. It created such a following that can only be compared to that of UNREAL and the original HALF-LIFE. CRYTEK, the publisher of both FAR CRY and CRYSIS, clearly did not rest on its laurels. CRYSIS is an *EVEN BETTER GAME* in many aspects. And toping FAR CRY is NOT an easy task...
Graphically the game is GORGEOUS! Not only it is both DX10 and DX9 compatible, it truly maximizes their capabilities. Moving in the jungle is just unbelievable: the natural foliage, the game of light and shadow, the clear water...The weapons are well designed (familiar shapes but mostly futuristic) and their muzzle flashes add to the game realism. Replenishing your ammo is almost never a problem, provided you are frugal with your snipper bullets. A nice touch: most weapons are enhanceable with targeting-lasers, sniper-sights and silencers. The "weapon" you will enjoy more is, of course, the nanite-muscle-suit, a kind of augmenting exoskeleton that serves as both armor and turning you into a super-human. Throwing your enemies over the tree tops can be really fun - and their limp movements and shouted insults are totally realistic! Speaking of realism, wait to reach the zero-gravity levels: the weapons' kick will propel you backwards as it should! And, very important, all these great graphics with steep yet not exorbitant system requirements! CRYSIS is much more stable than BIOSHOCK, although graphically clearly superior.
The sound has also been well worked on. There are a number of moments where sound clues are the warning you will get. The sound of an enemy crawling towards you is not a good omen...So get rid of those old headphones and plug in a good set of speakers.
The levels are beautifully designed and the AI EXCEPTIONAL! I had a group of enemies outflank me as I was engaged with their comrade left as bait! Shoot an enemy from cover only to watch him seek cover as well - until he or one of his comrades spot your position! Overall, the gameplay controls is very similar to that of FAR CRY (and most FPS nowadays). I do have to point out that movement is precise and effective. Running is fast whereas crouching is stealthy. The game also sports a multiplayer - although it may require lowering the video specs to avoid lagging.
Now, this game (being an EA release) sports ...SecuROM. Usually I subtract at least two stars from games burdening us with such dangerous security routines. However, I liked the game so much I felt torn - and decided to make an exception. So, if you are boycotting SecuROM games, be warned, otherwise:
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Great Game ready for the next gen of gfx December 10, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This game is excellent. Incredibly atmospheric and a great story line to boot. Starting with the intro to the story done with in game gfx rather than a rendered afair it really gets you interested in the story to come.
One of the things I like most is the nanosuit which allows you to radically change approaches to enemy targets and in game situations. From the Stealth , to maximum Armour to Max. speed and Max strength you really can leap tall buildings in a single bound.
As with Far Cry the game starts out with a lot of mystery as to the situation on the island and gets going quite quickly.
The main caveat with this game is that it needs a beast to be able to play at higher settings. For a playable (read round 30fps) framerate for me I am running my Dual core Athlon x2 4800 and ATI X1950XTX at 1440x900 resolution (down from the native 1990x1200 on my 24" LCD) and the settings all on low or medium. The reviewer on a tech site had dual 8800 Ultras with 16GB of DDR3 and still had trouble with Very High settings and AA enabled.
That being said even at lower settings this game still looks the part and of course multi player only adds to the fun.
Worthy of five stars November 27, 2007 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I think the game is very good,so far I cannot find anything to moan about. My computer is over two years old Pentium 4 3.2 2GB memory Geforce 8800 GTS 120gb Hard Drive
I find some of the reviews silly,as for finishing the game in two days,WHY?must have been good to keep you at it for that length of time.I am a pensioner and hope it lasts two months!!!
