Amazon.co.uk Review
In a nutshell:
One of the most respected Western role-playing games of all time is back with huge improvements in graphics and accessibility, including a completely real-time combat system and the largest, most detailed game world ever seen. Phew.

The lowdown:
Although previous Elder Scrolls games have enjoyed something of a like it or loathe it reputation, this latest sequel has the means to appeal to everyone thanks to one simple improvement: its incredible new graphics. Unlike many role-playing games it is viewed from a first person perspective, with a game world portrayed in a staggering amount of detail, and realistic psychics and characters that genuinely seem to be going on about their own separate lives. The game's real appeal though lies in the huge freedom: play it exactly how you want.

Most exciting moment:
Using the new combat engine to fight off dozens of enemies, then stealing one of their mounts and riding off into the sunset.

Since you ask:
Emperor Uriel Septim VII is voiced by Star Trek and X-Men luminary Patrick Stewart, but all the characters in the game have full spoken voiceovers instead of just onscreen text. This is the next generation, you know.

The bottom line:
One of the most realistic and accessible role-playing games ever made.
Harrison Dent

5 out of 5 stars Morrowind for the Masses!   September 25, 2006

Amazing graphics and incredible depth, coupled with stacks of playability make this the best game in a long while. I've played it for over 110 hours and not finished the main quest. Its the sort of game you can get a lot of satisfaction out of without even chasing the main storyline, there is so much going on. You can even buy houses and furnish them or spend time adding to your library of books or searching out an elusive bottle of wine for your collection!!
A lot of players criticise the levelling system saying the game is either too hard or too easy but the fact is you can control when you level by sleeping (if its too easy then sleep to raise a number of times, if its too hard then gain experience without sleeping.
You do need a pretty quick system to run the game but its playable at a number of detail and resolution levels. I have 1.5Gb ram and run on an old AGP A7N8X board with a GEForce 7800GS and its perfectly smooth without stutter or slow down (the card makes the difference). Note the general consensus is that this is unplayable with any graphics card lower than a GEForce 6800 - i tried with a GE5900 and it was no good.
Overall, an amazing game with unbelievable potential (the add-ons are starting to come out now)!! It doesn't have the depth or 'beardyness' of Morrowind but is easier to pick up and put down. Your 'other half' will hate it . . .unless you get them into it as well!

5 out of 5 stars Simply Stunning   April 7, 2006

I've had the game for a week or so now and it is simply stunning!

The idea of the game is to give you a totally free form RPG and to fit a story line on top of that that you can choose to follow of you want.

From the start of the game you get a feeling that this is something just a bit different (unless of course you played Morrowind in which case it is very familiar). If you've followed the progress of the game during development you will realise that you start off in a prison and the emperor comes through your prison cell and at that point your game starts. You follow the emperor and you can choose to branch off and follow a small scale dungeon and it is your choices here that get the computer to select a character class based on your style of play - obviously you can completely disreguard the choice and select a different class or make your own.

You no longer have to walk around as much as you did in Morrowind for two reasons. One is horses, you get from a to b fast on a horse and there are various different types of horses to be purchased near the different towns. The second reason is fast travel, if you have been to a location before you can select the location and travel there instantly in game time.

All the guilds are there (fighters, mages, thieves, dark brotherhood) and you can still do missions to advance within them, but the way in which you join all bar the fighters guild has changed. You need to FIND the thieves guild and pass an initiation before you can join. For the mages guild you need 6 recommendations prior to advancement and for the dark brotherhood you need to commit muredr BEFORE you can join. There is also an area where you can fight to the death for fame, glory and money...and if you look hard enough you may also find soem other factions to join

The graphics are a delight to behold, I've got a radion 850 XT graphics card P4 3.2GHz 1GB RAM and it plays everything on high resolution quite happily at 1024x768. The reflections off the water are great, and some of the lighting effects are amazing.

As with all these types of free form games you must talk to the people around you to pick up side quests that will keep your skills improving. The voice acting is also pretty good as well.

Combat is now much more involved. You now have to choose to block (rather than it being based on your block skill) and strike at the right moments in the fight and you can also cast spells at any time without having to change to the casting position (be aware that if you cast you cannot block at the same time).

The quest system is now stunningly simple to follow. You have a list of available quests that you have found, you then select the one that you want to be active and you get a marker on the compass to show you the direction to head in - you still must be able to find the location, but you don't need to wander for days looking for a door on an island off the coast like I did in Morrowind whilst looking for a particular dungeon for one quest. It sounds like it kills some of the enjoyment, but is doesn't.

Most of the reviews on here mention the features that are new, but none of them mention the gameplay. To put it honestly this is the most addictive game I have played in ages. It is a completely involving experience and I imagine that I will be playing it through a few times with different character classes already.

This is a must buy game, BUT you must like your free form adventure games - if you cannot get your head around doing what you want, wandering aimlessly looking for things to do and just looking for dungeons for plunder then this is not for you. If you loved Morrowind then BUY IT NOW!!!

A simply stunning 10/10.

5 out of 5 stars Best game i've ever played and i play too many   June 7, 2007

Previous to playing this game, i was always a bit sceptical about RPG's. i thought most were kinda silly and to linear. GTA games (if they can be considered an RPG) were the only exception to this. i play TES 3 - Morrowind, which was mildly entertaing, but it was confusing and it was impossible to find anything without a game guide. i bought Oblivion on the (very) strong recomendation of a friend. it blew me away the first time i played it. initially it can be overwhelming (especially if you don't normally read game manuals), but the controls are actually very easy to get to grips with. the graphics are awesome if you've got a decent PC and graphics card, music is pretty good too, but the gameplay (and that is what makes a game) is spectacular. ive havent wasted so many hours of my life on a game since AOE; age of kings came out. although not completely open ended there is so much to do it is a rare thing to complete a game. the only criticism i would have is that the backstory isn't as interesting as those of other TES games, however there is humour and the fantasy world is nonetheless very well constructed. definate buy for anyone who appreciates games of whatever type. the specs arent even that high either so a top of the line computor isnt necessary.

5 out of 5 stars When I didn't think RPGs could get any better than Morrowind.......   February 8, 2007

I am a 40 year old working mother of 3 kids with very little spare time to devote to virtual worlds, but the time I have had I have thoroughly enjoyed in the realm of Oblivion. Playing as a Paladin type character(I just can't bring myself to be bad) I have enjoyed this game so much that I am now bereft that I have completed the main quest, and all of the Guild and ancilliary quests that I can - plus the Knights of the Nine add-on. I am now desperately searching for another game to fill the hole. Having played Morrowind and Neverwinter Nights (and the two add-ons)- I'm afraid Oblivion is for me the ultimate in non-linear RPGs.

Just to pick up on some of the comments posted so far - I'm finding it hard to find a game that will load and run effectively on my PC. I didn't have a moments problem with Oblivion or Morrowind. I have bought Neverwinter Nights II and am thinking seriously of throwing it in the bin as I have failed to make it play on either of our PCs.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best games i've ever seen!   May 28, 2007

Have you ever played Oblvion? No? I have and it is truely breathtaking!. The game lets you create your own character from a number of races. (mine was imperial) You then start of in the first level in a prison cell, then you escape from the imperial prison to find your self in a lush landscape filled with swaying trees, biuldings and a huge castle. Thats the beggining of the game. The thing that i love about Oblivion is the huge map and the fact that you can explore every corner of it.

But the thing i really, really love about it is that everything is real time (you know like day turns to night and then it rains. that sort of thing)

oh and one more thing you dont just have'to do the the main quest, you can do a number of other qeusts as well like assasinating, robbing, joining giulds and i think even fighting in wars!

BUY THIS GAME!! IT IS THE BEST RPG OF THE CENTURY!
