I have been a fan of the Total war series ever since I stumbled across Shogun and was blown away by the individual unit types and abilities. Never before had I played a game that my men ran out off arrows or got tired and scared. I have followed the games ever since and have enjoyed them all with varying degrees. The original medieval 2 game was great and even better when the patch came out to stop my computer from crashing everytime I faced the Timurids, and have enjoyed hours of game play. This expansion pack, and I use the term loosely as it could be a game in its own rite(you still need the original) has been well thought out and gives you the opportunity to fight the many regional conflicts that the larger game has to skip over. I have only played 3 of the 4 conflicts in the game, playing as only 1 of the factions available in each (lots more to go back to) and have found that I have to change my tactics for each off them. I am a defensive player, I like to build big walls and hide, and if I can't then a defensive position on a bridge is where i'll be. Forget about that when you are in America, as my Indian tribes don't build walls and I couldn't hold a bridge with 1000 heavy aztecs streaming over. The British campaign was more to my likeing and as a Scot I found great joy in the Execution of my captives (guess who they where) without the Pope getting on his high horse (no pope in this pack). This game has the only negitive for me as when I killed off the English the Baron faction also dissapeared. Now the Crusade campaign, a joy to play. My defensive style has suited me well and I have started to use more than just my military units. Send in a couple off spys and the enemy city population gets upset, use your assasins to devistating effect (kill an armies captain in the same turn you attack and he isn't replaced), priests or Imams, who new that sending in 2 or 3 could do so much damage (someone who reads the manual), all the annoying problems in the original game made good.
Fun while it lasts September 25, 2007 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is a really good expansion pack for a game that was already brilliant. Apart from the 4 new campaigns, this expansion pack adds a few changes which although sutle, really do improve the game play. First of all, each campaign has different abilites associated with it, Britannia has the Barons revolt where if you dont care for your barons loyalty, they rebel and start their own faction rather then become just a normal rebel who you can latter bribe. In the crusades campaign, key figures such as Richard the Lionheart, Saladin and Baybars feature and providespecial abilites ot the army they are leading. In the Americas, there are no castles but support is provided from the homeland and explration is more challenging. In the Teutonics campaign crusading nobles help your cause and the good old Hanseatic League, lasat since in the first installment of Medieval returns. A recurring theme which is probably the best feature is that recuitment is dependant upon relgion, culture etc... as a certain level of catholicism for example is needed to recuit the most powerful units. The main problem this game has is that although there are four campaigns, they are quite short, some only require the capture of 25 settlements for the long campaign and thus I completed the game in under a week. it is a lot better if you take the time to play as all the different types of factions instead of completing each campaign once and then enver playing on it again.
Wow - easily the best of the lot so far! October 1, 2007 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is an extraordinarily good expansion for a great game and worth every penny. Excellent historical detail, great graphics, fine game engine, bug-free and really original. You get 4 brand new campaigns - each totally detailed and challenging to play, each with their own intro movie, and you learn a lot about history into the bargain. The game world is stunning to see, both in the campaign mode and battle mode. Great medieval period architecture - it seems almost a shame to have to destroy it in a seige! I disagree with one reviewer who said Rome Total War was better; come on man what planet are you on! - the graphics are MUCH better, those gaudily coloured clones have gone to be replaced with realistic looking warriors of many differant statures (short and ugly or tall and ugly!), you get fantastic gunpowder units now for the late period, staggering castles as well as cities, plus religion plays a BIG role (pope, crusades, jihads etc), and yes there are still war elephants as well, not to mention merchants and princesses, hence gameplay is much deeper. Finally there was just 1 proper campaign in RTW, with M2TW we've now got a total of 5!!!!! Well done CA for the choice of the campaigns too, new and challenging, the Brittania campaign was a surprise as a lot of us just expected a re-run of Viking invasion from the original MTW, instead you get.........well you'll see, suffice to say if you play as England then keep a tight rein on your Barons, as well as the Welsh, Scotch and Irish. Ah just like the Home Nations Rugby but with spears! Buy it, take other stuff off your hard drive if you have to, just get it now!
Expansion pack for visually stunning wargaming world September 20, 2007 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
Medieval II, itself the follow-up to Medieval and Rome: Total War was both an engrossing war strategy game and a comprehensive exploration of the history and of one of the world's most tumultuous ages.
Players of the original game experienced Grand Campaign scenarios from the Crusades up until the dawn of the renaissance, including a campaign against the Aztecs of central and south America. This expansion pack opens up four entirely new campaigns to add to those available in the original game - this time covering conflicts in Britain, Northern Europe, America and the Holy Land.
The Britannia campaign is set in 1258 and dramatises a five-way struggle for Britain between English monarch Henry IIII and the Scots, Welsh and Itish, as well as the voracious king of Norway, Haakon IV.
The Crusades campaign is set earlier, in 1174 and concerns a conflict between Egypt and the Turks and the infidel forces from the west.
The Teutonic campaign lets you explore the Teutonic Order's 13th century Holy War on pagan Lithuania and the Baltic.
Finally, the Americas Campaign, set in the latest period - 1521, involves the famous conquistadors of Spain and their attempted conquest of the Aztec and their famous Triple Alliance.
As packed with content as the original game, this expansion pack is well worth considering for those who have exhausted the playing possibilities of the original. As before, this is heavy-duty wargaming for clever kids and serious strategists - and suitable for older kids, especially those interested in military history, as well as for bloodthirsty adults.
Superb - best game released in ages September 8, 2007 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I owned and played to death the original MTW which was superb. I bought the expansion and wasnt impressed. I bought Rome Total War after seeing it on Time Commanders and it was very good but lacked proper Roman tactics. I bought the expansion and wished I hadnt bothered. I bought Medieval Total War 2 and wasnt that impressed. Too much like RTW.
So one would think I should have learned my lesson with expansions. Well...no I bought this one on a whim. And I have to say its the best game Ive ever bought. It makes my purchase of MTW2 completely good value. Ive played the American campaign of the Spanish conquest of the Aztecs and have to say its great fun. The campaign has been changed subtly and enough to really make you feel like you are playing a new game. But the amount of detail is also very nice. And having masses of natives attacking your small armies is superb fun. Although I say attacking at the moment I am attacking them as they do seem to be quite passive. But that will probably change.
The game however also comes with three other massive campaigns. The Britain one will be very interesting to be able to play Scotland of whatever with the new hero units. But also a detailed Crusade campaign should be really fascinating.
So although I have only played one campaign so far I have no doubts in recommending this game to others.
I recently have bought Enemy Engaged 2, Silent Hunter 4, and MTW2 and was fed up with bugs and errors in the games recently. But its nice to see that this expansion has none of that.
