4 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable   September 14, 2008
After reading other reviews i thought i would have to leave one as well. Firstly the game is slightly repetative, but arnt nearly all shoot em games? The glaive is just a fabulous weapon, and if this was not created it would only get a 3 stars from me and not 4 because without it it could get a bit boring, bur credit to the creators as it really is the best weapon to date on any game. The graphics are good which i would give about 3.5/5 basing on graphics such as Drakes Fortune whice are truly amazing. Another good aspect of this game i like is that it can give me goose bumps. Sneaking through grave yards with the church bell ringing slowly in the back ground can be quite creepy and even more so if you play this in the dark...then pops out a zombie unexpectedly....brilliant. This game is worth its money...buy it...you will enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Fast paced, action packed fun.   June 6, 2008

It's easy to see why Dark Sector is getting so many mixed reviews. At times it is one of the most thrilling games I have played. The Glaive is one of the best weapons seen in a game, and ducking out of cover, throwing it and then controlling it in slow motion and aiming for heads, legs etc is great fun. For me this aspect of the game never gets boring. However, I can understand why other people would get bored though. The game is very repetitive. It has a similar feel to resident evil 4, but no where near the immersion. Where resi 4 felt as if it kept evolving all the way through with new environments, dark sector feels very samey. The puzzles are also something which have had a lot of criticism. For me they are perfect as they are easy! If however, you like to test your brain a bit more then you might find them a bit insulting. It's definitely worth looking at but it wont be to every ones taste.

4 out of 5 stars A great game   June 5, 2008
This game has been described as a mix of Resident Evil and Gears of War, now I've never played Gears of War but this is a hell of a lot better than Resident Evil! One big let down for me in Resident Evil was the control system i.e. it was slow, cumbersome and generally crap. When I read that Dark Sector was like Resident Evil I was anticipating a similar annoyance but thankfully the controls in this game are far superior and a breeze to use.
This game, right from the very beginning is a lot of fun. Even before you get the glaive the duck and cover system and gunplay is really well done. Once the glaive arrives then the fun really begins! At first you may think it's a little annoying to use as it's hard to get a kill with one hit but then you get the after-touch ability and once that happens you'll be guiding the glaive directly at your enemy's neck! As soon as you discover that you can take cover from a guy with a gatlin gun and just after-touch the glaive round the corner to take his leg off, you'll be giggling like a deranged cartoon villain!
The infected that attack you are very reminiscent of zombies and the various scenes where you have a crowd of them shambling round a corner to get you just add to the atmosphere! This game can genuinely send a chill down your spine as it has you peeking round corners for the infected hordes. The musical score is absolutely inspired and really adds to the mood.
Dark Sector has a lot of replay value, not just because it is a fun game but because your powers constantly evolve as you progress. I won't ruin the surprise but let me just say that there are plenty of imaginative ways to take down your foes!
There are only two reasons I have not given this game a 5 star rating. Firstly, the story is almost non-existant: go to assassinate baddie, get infected with a mysterious virus, get powers and kill things! This being said, it is a very minor fault as the game doesn't need a deep Metal Gear Solid-like story, the gameplay more than makes up for it. Secondly, the melee attacks are a little annoying to use so just make sure you don't let yourself get swamped with infected!
In conclusion, if you like action, a bit of gore, a bit of suspense and a really funky bladed weapon then buy this game!

4 out of 5 stars A triumph for action over story   May 31, 2008
Dark Sector is a funny old game. Playing as a secret opps agent called Hayden Tenno, you're sent to a Russian state on one final mission, but are infected with a deadly virus that has been ravaging the locals. Somehow, it has served to make you stronger, including metalising your body and giving you a triple bladed boomerang potruding from your hand called a glaive. Your basic quest is to shoot and slash your way through the story, separating as many limbs from your enmies as possible and causing as much destruction as you can along the way.

There's no need to go too much in depth with the story, because it really isnt all that great. It never fully explores itself, presenting characters you dont need to care about and often leaving you alone for a few hours before popping up with a random cut scene, giving a quite disjointed feel.

Yet Dark Sector still has enough going for it. Besides the fact that throwing your glaive at enemies in the hope of causing decapitations and lacerations never gets old, the combat system is fairly challenging, with a few fairly tricky boss battles. It utilises a Gears of War style point-and-shoot-from-cover system, which might sound dull but suits the game well. Also, the game's atmosphere is constantly thick and delciously bleak, and at times really can grab you. Coupled with a host of tricky enemies, the game presents a fairly balanced challenge.

On the whole, Dark Sector is worth its asking price for the glaive and all its harrowing possibilities. The developer's do need a few more lessons on telling a story, because a fairly promising premise was ruined with poor implementation here. That said, the combat and atmoshpherics were more than enough to see me through to the game's end. An unbalanced treat.
