Effortless. April 23, 2008 60 out of 61 found this review helpful
I had read a lot about Western Digital Passport drives not getting enough power from certain laptops. I checked my USB 2.0 connections in 'Hardware' in 'system information' and was informed that all 4 were rated at 500mA (Dell Latitude D630) so I did wonder if I would have problems with this unit.
However, there were no problems at all. Having got the packaging off with an angle grinder and an industrial laser (and a small first aid kit)** I simply plugged the Passport into a spare USB 2.0 and it started up immediately and was recognised by the system. (XP Pro) I formatted and named it in order to get rid of any dubious (and usually ineffective) software/adware etc that manufacturers provide, and fired up my Acronis True Image 10 software. Fifteen minutes later I had a complete bootable clone of my entire C drive. Job done.
I tested by booting from it and there were no problems. System is a bit slow when everything is running through USB 2.0 (to be expected) but re-assuring to know that if my Laptop's internal HD died then I could get a new one installed and boot from the Passport to load everything back without a rebuild.
Maybe the underpowered issue is one that has been addressed with this generation of Passport. Maybe the people who had problems were trying to drive the Passport from USB 2.0 whilst their laptop was running from battery rather than the laptop mains adaptor. Maybe Dell are a bit 'conservative' in the rating of 500mA. I don't know but it all worked fine. Nice, elegant, compact, quiet and suprisingly quick.
Good luck with yours.
**I wish manufacturers would use something other than impenetrable plastic 'bubble' packaging. What is wrong with using a recyclable card box?
Tiny, lightweight and very useful June 3, 2008 70 out of 72 found this review helpful
I've been using this product for a couple of months now with my laptop. It's obviously designed with portability in mind - it's tiny and so light that I'm surprised I haven't lost it! I carry it around loose in my laptop bag and it seems strong enough too. Plenty of space to fit all your stuff on - I in fact mainly use mine for storing games and tv recordings on (they take up a lot of space on laptops HDD) and it does the job perfectly. Would highly recommend this to anyone who wants a very portable external HDD with plenty of space for under 100.
Huge portable storage with a minimum of wires May 27, 2008 28 out of 29 found this review helpful
And it's quick too. I used it to move my video/mp3 collection to my PS3 and was pretty much astounded at how fast it went. And all running off power supplied over the USB cable. Very 21st century and a world away from the old 3.5" external drives with clunky power supplies I've been using up til now. Neither of which I could get the PS3 to even recognize I might add.
I can't think of a bad thing to say about it.
fabulous June 2, 2008 49 out of 52 found this review helpful
This is by far and away the BEST thing I have ever got. I am a total gadget fanatic and travel a lot. I have ATMT media drives at places I stay which are really bulky and heavy but with this thing I can carry around 320GB of stuff literally in my pocket. It powers itself off your computer so no power cables, no travel adapters - as long as you have access to a computer somewhere your sorted - its really light and transfers stuff quicky. It's silent and opens as a drive on your computer. For the first time in my life I haven't been over my weight limit at the airport. Just FAB.
Great piece of kit, buy one now. July 25, 2008 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
Ordered this because i needed extra space for my macbook, arrived next day. This is a superb piece of kit, i needed the extra space for video editing. Powered by USB, quick transfer times and whisper quite, it even matches the white of the Mac. My only complaint is that it has no firewire connection, but you can't have everything. I can't believe they have crammed a 320gb drive into a enclosure the height & width of a passport with a thickness of 15mm, At a shade under 75 this is superb value for money, buy one now.
