5 out of 5 stars Excellent game, though a little short   September 21, 2008

First things first - all the bleeting about DRM is vastly over-rated. I installed the game, it activated (silently) and I can activate it on up to 5 other machines, or upgrade my main machine 5 times before needing to contact EA. I don't know about you, but given that I only upgrade my machine once every 3 years, I think being "safe" for 15 years is probably OK.

I know people upgrade bits and pieces here and there, but having just changed my graphics card and hard disk without it having to be reactivated, those people really don't have anything to worry about.

Last thing on DRM - I don't really like that we need to have DRM - but I hate the fact that 1/15 copies of Crysis were stolen even more. The root problem isn't DRM - it's nasty thiefs who think it's ok to sponge of the rest of us.

Onto the game :-)

As you would expect, the game feels very much like Crysis - the graphics are spectacular and the action sequences are immensely good. To me the benchmark for "virtual" story telling is set by both the crysis games and Call of Duty 4. Crysis Warhead is probably the first game where I've actually felt the first pangs of actual emotional connection to game character(s). Something that you might normally only feel in a cinema with real actors, is now nearly within reach of computer game animators, such is the quality of animation and voice acting.

If I have one gripe about the game - and it's also one I had about the original Crysis and also CoD4, its that the single player game is very short. I completed it within a day, though I'm not a big multiplayer gamer so can't comment on that side of things. That said, given that a cinema tickets can cost you 6 quid for one and a half hours of entertainment, the cost of this expansion pack compares more than favourably when compared to films.

In short - DRM is not that much of an issue for me and the game is a benchmark-setter. Only complaint is that the single player is very short, but given the quality of the package it's understandable given how much money and effort have obviously gone into this game

5 out of 5 stars DRM bad - but game very very good.   October 1, 2008

I bought Warhead on Steam and I've had the most fun I've had with a game for a really long time. I agree, however, that EA's DRM policies are disgraceful and I hope the US lawsuits are successful. In fact, I hope we see action by our legislators to prevent companies from curtailing consumer rights in this way. But I don't think boycotting the game will guarantee our rights, all it will do is make the series look like a dud from a sales point of view.

The developpers of Crysis Warhead deserve big sales. This is a 5 star game. The pacing is spot-on, the visual style is stunning, the combat is tactical, satisfying and varied, and even the story telling is handled way better than it was in the original Crysis game (more restrained, to-the-point dialogue and well-executed cut-scenes).

I've completed the game but I'm about to start another play-through because the first time around I took a 'stealth' approach. That was a lot of fun, sneaking through large squads of North Korean soldiers and quietly picking off the ones who strayed from their units. The suit functions, the varied weaponry (claymores, AT mines, rockets, customisable assault rifles and pistols etc) and the open-ended environments mean that you can play out an endless combination of tactics on the unsuspecting but reactive goons. There are (literally) 'on-rails' moments as well, but these are so well executed and entertaining that I doubt you will be able to complain.

In addition to the engaging mechanics and good pacing, I found that I couldn't get enough of the visuals. You just want to soak it all up somehow, it's truly beautiful in my opinion (I was playing with everything on 'gamer' settings, the one down from the max). Obviously this is somewhat subjective, but I thought Warhead was prettier and smoother running than the original.

In conclusion this is Crysis without the 'filler'. It's intense, fun, visceral and beautiful. I love it! Buy it despite the DRM and show the developpers that we appreciate their work - or else we'll be seeing fewer and fewer games of this calibre in the future. The best option is probably to buy it on Steam, because I would guess that if they ever remove the 'activation' restrictions it would be easiest to do so on that more secure platform.

5 out of 5 stars Great game, don't let silly drm change your mind, its not bad at all.   September 20, 2008

Crysis Warhead is a really great game, and is exactly how the last one should have been. It features great action, in which you can approach however you want, as well as the nano suit, that was in the last game and is very versatile and really makes the gameplay something special. The graphics of warhead are really spectacular, the best there is. Period. The last game was also nice looking but the character models have been greatly improved, especially on the faces, which are now much more defined and display more emotion. The cryengine 2 is now much more optimized and will run on low and mid end hardware alot better than last game. the multiplayer is very good and now features team deathmatch,(I have no idea why it didnt have it in last game?)You also play as Sykes who is way way cooler than nomad and British FTW!
Overall Crysis Warhead is an amazing game and worth picking up if you have a capable pc (core 2 duo or dual core amd for cpu and id say 8600 series for gpu nvidia and 2900 or 3000 series+ for ati and for ram 2gb plus. This is for great gameplay, as it will run on lower systems ).
PS. Whats all this DRM nonsense, It really isn't that bad, hell, all you guys can boycott an amazing 5 star gaming experience if you want, but I think i'd rather play it. It was EA's decision to put the drm in the game, and EA are not going to fail because of this one game, all you are doing is killing off crytek, who really worked hard to develop this exellent game, and who are one of the main companies trying to help pc gaming and bring it into a new age, along with companies like valve. All you would be doing by boycotting this game is miss out on a great gaming experience (also look at that price! thats darn good value!) and helping to kill off talented game developers who are not giving up on pc gaming.

5 out of 5 stars 10 hours of intense mayhem   October 1, 2008

What is going on here ? 59 reviews with 1 star, all complaining about DRM, sounds like people are deliberately blitzing this high profile site to make a point, not about the game, but about DRM.

The DRM is no big deal, install and forget. You get 5 activations across different PCs or operating systems. Should last you 5 years ! How often are you gonna play this game ! 1 week at most, then put away and forget. This DRM argument is political and in practice has little impact for anyone playing the game.

As for the game, its brilliant. 10 hours of intense mayhem for 15. Absolute bargain. State of the art graphics, improved AI, the aliens are huge fun in this expansion too, different types, mass attacks, more explosions, more combat, new vehicles, new weapons. The game deserves 9/10. DRM 1/10.

5 out of 5 stars Give the DRM moaning a rest   September 19, 2008

Personally I think it's disgusting that people can leave a "review" of something they have not even bought in an attempt to make the game fail. The original Crysis did not have much protection and got hammered by the thieving leaches that are destroying PC gaming because they think their entitled to something for free. It was one of the most pirated games in history. Developers turn up to work day after day and spend years on these games, they have bills to pay, food to be bought etc. DRM is not great, it is also NOT a massive pain either (you can get the number of installs increased if required by EA). If they think that it will combat piracy then who I am to say it won't. In any event the DRM will no doubt be disabled within a year after the main bulk of sales. It has been on most other DRM games (BIOSHOK for example). How many installs do you want in a year anyway? Surly stating that you only get three when you get 5 is defamatory as well. At least get your facts straight. CRYTEK (the developer) have already said that because of the MASSIVE piracy/theft of the original they will unlikely develop anymore games solely for the PC. I think this is a massive shame and is not helped by the moaning going on here. Instead of trying to destroy the game, why not try and support and reward good work, which is what this game will undoubtedly be. Crysis was fantastic and I have little doubt this will be too, and yes I have bought it. If you don't want to buy the game because of DRM then fine, but leave out the boring, uninformed, malicious "review".
