Amazon.co.uk Review

If the U.S. Army ever does come into possession of a crashed UFO then the very worst place to hide it would be Area 51 - considering that's exactly the first place everyone would think to look for it. If real aliens are anything like the ones in this follow-up to the 2005 hit though they're better off kept a secret. Like the last game this is a first person shoot `em-up with no pretentions about complex storytelling or realism, just the ability to fight lots and lots of bug-eyed monsters. It turns out they've escaped from the titular army base and you're cast as a Special Forces soldier sent to invade their space.

Thankfully you're not sent in alone and you have full control over a squad of ally soldiers, as you order them around by sending them to specific areas or telling them to target a particular bad guy. Each soldier will have their own level of morale, where doing badly makes them poorer shots and eventually convinces them to make a run for it. Thankfully the opposite is true if they're feeling confident though. You'll also be able to hitch a lift on various vehicles, from jeeps to helicopters, for one of a number of fun on-the-rails shooting sections. The game also comes with a wide range of online multiplayer, including a co-operative mode for two people. If there really are any aliens in Area 51 one then this should convince them to stay exactly where they are.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent   January 5, 2008

I bought this last week and all I can say is wow, exellent game play but I think it needs a Hd tv as I'm playing it on a non hd and its very twitchy (graphics) but after getting into gun fights you start to forget about it, its only realy when you running and your squad is next to you for some reason, walking is fine so whether theres too much going on in the game or its a glitch? anyone else had this problem? and if you want this game I'll give you the address and supplier

4 out of 5 stars Not bad   March 1, 2008

This game looks really good and the graphics are very good. However theres a lack of on screen hints so its not obvious how to eve open a door. Ive also had many glitches which started after I got in a vehicle (near the start) the game continuosly froze and has done up until where I am right now. Other than that its worth a buy es[ecially if you like resistance FOM as it feels similar.

3 out of 5 stars Has its moments but pretty average   April 19, 2008

Blacksite is typical conspiracy theory, alien invasion fantasy. Absorbing to play and easy to pick up, but does little new and the credits roll far too soon (5-6 hours). The majority of the game is by the numbers, with vehicles sections and a squad to control.

The game starts out in Iraq, then follows on years later in Nevada, leading up to the finale at the abandoned site of Area 51. The plot is interesting at first, but quickly trails off.
However, first impressions from the Iraq level arent promising and are perhaps the games weakest in terms of design.

The vehicle control scheme is terrible and frustrates throughout.
These sections in particular highlight just how linear the games levels are. The on foot sections hide this slighlty better, due to the squad mechanic. Which actually improves the game; pressing R1 at an enemy will put them as highest priority for your teammates to kill. A morale meter also determines how well your squad fight, although this only makes a difference on harder difficulties. Pressing R1 at a big glowing green icon will perform actions, like activating elevators and opening doors. But this does make Blacksite feel basic and it can take a long time for these icons to become active, leaving a lot of time spent waiting around.
The games loading screen also flickers constantly during levels.

Blacksites urban levels during its middle section are easily the best. Exploring and having full scale battles in trailer parks, residential areas and a drive-in movie theatre are great fun. Its just a shame this inspired level design couldnt hold throughout. Enemy design is also a strong point, with the exception of the bosses, which get too repetitive.

Blacksite does nothing new, big or clever. Its worth a rent, but little else.

3 out of 5 stars Looks great in HD on my 42 inch plasma TV   April 22, 2008

Graphics wise it looks great, I was quite impressed - good for showing off your PS3 and HDTV to your friends but that's about it really. I found the gameplay rather dull with no atmosphere. I would have liked more of back story or background information to put your mission into perspective, sort of give you an incentive or a purpose to carrying out your tasks in the game.
