Bioshock is one of the best games I've played on the PS3, and certainly one of the best first person shooters. It's also one of the few games that I'd consider playing again from start to finish.
One of the game's highlights is its original and fascinating setting. The story takes place in the year 1960, in an underwater city called Rapture. The city was built by Andrew Ryan as a utopia for like-minded individuals with an unwavering belief in free enterprise and laissez faire capitalism. Yet the city they have built for themselves has fallen apart. It is here that Jack (the character you play) enters the scene.
Jack's plane crashes in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and he finds himself at the very gates of Rapture. Taking a bathysphere to the city, he finds himself stuck in a society filled with genetically altered mutants who don't particularly like strangers.
This short synopsis doesn't cover the depth of the fully realised world contained in the game, or the plot, which is filled with surprising twists and turns. The decisions you take in the game will also affect the type of game you play. You can choose to help the people of Rapture or exploit them for your own benefit. The path you choose will determine the difficulty of the game, as well as the ending.
The city of Rapture itself is beautifully displayed. The graphics for the game are brilliant, from the characters to the setting. The effects are also great, from the water-flooded tunnels, to melting ice to raging fires.
In terms of game play, it handles brilliantly. The controls are easy to learn, while there's plenty of weapons to choose from, including pistols, machine guns, crossbows, flame throwers, trip mines, shotguns etc. This is not to mention that you can genetically modify your body giving you access to all sorts of powers from shooting flames and electricity from your fingers, to telekinesis. You can also take advantage of your environment, for instance, you can kill several enemies at once by shooting an electric bolt into the water pool they are standing in. This makes you consider your moves - sometimes the best strategy is to use stealth, at other times you just have to go in with all guns blazing.
The game is also effective at creating mood and atmosphere, and there's plenty of variety to be had. Sometimes it can get eerie wandering through empty corridors, at other times it can be exhilarating when you are faced in a gunfight. The game makes a good balance between horror and action.
If the game has any negatives, it's that it takes a lot of memory to install (it took me 20 minutes to install the game) and it's often difficult to navigate. You'll sometimes find yourself wandering round in circles for half an hour, only to realise that you have to enter a tiny passage hidden near a table. This can cause quite a bit of frustration, but it doesn't detract from the overall game.
Overall, the game has brilliant controls, great visuals, an effective soundtrack, and an interesting, engrossing story and setting. If you one a PS3, and you'd like a good first person shooter, then Bioshock is a must have. Highly Recommended!

For the long overdue PS3 release, a new difficulty mode has been added - Survivor - where every bullet counts. Items and cash are also restricted during this mode, adding a new layer of tactics for hardcore players.
There's full trophy support, with slightly more than 360s achievements. Downloadable content is soon to be added. Called `Challenge Rooms', these will present new puzzles and situations in Rapture. Little else is known at present.
Furthermore, the download-only plasmids that were made available after the 360 release are now included as standard. So the mighty `Sonic Boom' is first available at the Gatherer's Garden in Neptunes Bounty. Plasmids give the game an almost freeform approach. Many powers can turn the environment against your enemies, providing genuine choice when approaching a firefight (rather than a tacked on afterthought).
For the 14 months its taken for Bioshock to surface on PS3, this should be the definitive version. Yet the slowdown that cropped up in the 360 version is still present, and occurs far too often. Load times could be even longer than 360. There's also a mandatory install process. The lighting has been subtly improved, but some textures look slightly rough in comparison. Yet the graphics do make Bioshock hugely immersive, on many occasions I stopped playing and simply admired the surroundings. However, the atmosphere, plot and unique concept make Bioshock really stand out. This quality holds throughout, which is a rare thing.
For those who havent experienced Bioshock, there really is no time like the present. The most original game in some time. And a true masterpiece.

Firstly, I am only about 1/3 of the way through the game (I think), but it is a big game and you will get your moneys worth! So this review is based on the first 10 hours or so.
This game is great. It is not completely your traditional run about and blast non-stop FPS, there is more to it. For those of you old enough to remember System Shock, there are many similarities, hacking, weapon upgrades, trait and ability increase spending points, hitting people with crow bars etc. For those of you that don't remember, all you need know was that System Shock was a fantastic game and me being reminded of the game whilst playing is a plus point! Is it the same people or is the naming just a coincedence?
There are some minor puzzle elements and various ways you can play through levels depending on the choices you make.
The graphics are pretty good and atmospheric (I am Non HD), certainly nothing to complain about.
The sound is excellent, together with the graphics and the stylised game design, play this with the lights out and you will be absorbed for hours.
Downside?
As with any game of this calibre, do not buy if any of the below apply to you;
1.Currently trying to study for exams
2.Girlfriend nagging that you don't do anything together
3.Require early nights for work
4.Have a baby which requires feeding & changing periodically
5.Like to spend time outdoors in sunlight

I used to own this on PC and was completely addicted, I loved it, but due to the high spec requirements it frequently froze even though I was well above the recommended requirements, so I gave up.
Obviously no such problems on the PS3, I have now played it for several hours and I feel that this could be the Killer game and people will want to buy a PS3 just for Bioshock. Note...to play it properly on a PC you need a graphics card which costs as much as a PS3.....enough said.
Beware, this game is the stuff of nightmares, the atmosphere is seriously eerie and sound effects are spooky at times. I am what you would call the more mature gamer, (over 50 years old) yet in some scenes I could feel the hairs standing up on the back of my neck.....most definitely not for people of a nervous disposition our very young people. The "18" rating is justified.
In full HD it looks brilliant, (as you would expect from the PS3). And from what I have seen game play is identical to the XBox 360 and PC version but with a few additions such as an even higher difficulty mode but it is hard enough on easy mode if your not a hard core gamer, and have a life out side of gaming.
The controls are easy to master, and the puzzles not to demanding, while some say it is almost to easy you can make this as hard as you want by switching various options off....
It is basically a first person shooter, but it does ask you some moral questions, to harvest or not to harvest........
So don't listen to the pedantic critics, I think that is just from the people who hoped the PS3 would fail. It is JUST a game, but it is very good , easy to play yet hard to complete on any level, and is very addictive .
It will keep you going for months
Get it , play it with the lights out and frighten yourself......it is that good.

Here is my usual 'trademark' review:
GOOD POINTS:
+ Staggeringly good graphics and animations
+ Breathtaking Water & Fire effects
+ As immersive as any game out there
+ Chilling, cinema style presentation that any blockbuster movie would be proud of
+ Exclusive PS3 only DLC
+ Quite a large game
BAD POINTS:-
- Most of the graphical/technical glitches are there from the PC/Xbox360 versions
- Still no multi=player modes
- New difficuly level is very tough indeed
SUMMARY: Bioshock is still one of the best shooters ever released and it goes without saying, if you haven't played Bioshock yet, you need to experience what the hype is all about. No PS3 owner who doesn't have a 360 should be without a brand spanking new copy of Bioshock in their collection of games. Bioshock is just too good to overlook. The only real negative point to hash out about the PS3 porting of Bioshock deals with some minor graphical hiccups and the promise of future exclusive content. It would have been nice to have some exclusives besides an ultra-tough extra level of difficulty. For the good side of the port, challenge room downloadable content is on its way this month and trophies are fully support on launch. Revisit Rapture and explore the one of the best shooters ever released.
