5 out of 5 stars Force Edge   August 2, 2008
15 out of 16 found this review helpful

Now that this game is finally out, reviews can be done by those who actually own the game. I am one of those people.

To start with, graphics...
Character models, outstanding. Even your own custom characters look amazing, unlike most games that include a create a character option, where your own looks rubbish comapred to the originals. Not the case here. Also, for those of you having trouble creating a character from scratch, select the character box inbetween "random" an "Sigfreid" :)

The customisation even allows you to change originals. Meaning you can have Mitsirugi in a suit of armour with different hair if you so choose. But back on the graphics. Although they look good, the backgrounds could do with more variety imo. But still, nothing to be scoffed at, as they are better than the majority of fighters that we see nowadays.

Audio wise, it is in fact laughable as always. The Soul franchise, right back to day one with Soul Edge on the PS1 (Which should be released on PSN imo), has always had ropey english voice overs. These are just as bad, but not in the kind of way that you want to poke fun at Namco for being so stupid, instead you should realise that the reason may be that they have spent more time refining the game itself, instead of perfecting audio.

Which brings me onto gameplay. A friend of mines recently doenloaded the original Soul Calibur on Xbox Live, and was reminded of how good it was. Similair theme here guys. The fighting is fast, and intense, and most of all, if you want it to be, it is very technical. You can get by on button mashing true enough, but where's the fun to be had there?

If you take your time with any one character, be it real, or your own creation, get to know there moves, and combos, then you're in for a special treat. The moves will look amazing, and the battles will look epic, fitting together nicely with the orchestral score ramping up in the background.

Finally, online mode.
Owning this game for the PS3 (I wanted Darth), the online mode is basically matching you against similairly skilled opponents. However this is not always the case. You sometimes find yourself up against a far superior opponent than yourself, and will in fact, have your ass handed to you three times in a row very quickly. Best bet is find some friends with the game and play them until you are better.
But generally online plays like a dream. No lag whatsoever from my experience, quick matchmaking, and simple interface.

The one gripe I have isn't with the game, it's with players. They tend to kick you out if you beat them....

So, overall. Soul Calibur 4. Finally here, Star Wars characters and all (Btw, good luck against the apprentice in arcade mode). It was definately worth the hype in my opinion, but you lot will have to judge for yourselves. I give it a solid 5 stars because the time I've spent with it has shown the love that Namco has put into the fifth installment of the Soul series. And I salute them for it. I only hope they leave it here, on a high note, and don't continue down the Mortal Kombat path of spin off's and sequels upon sequels....

However, if anyone has this game on ps3, and fancies some online battling, add me and give me a message and we can have some epic battles. :)

5 out of 5 stars Best Fighting Game!! Period!!   August 5, 2008
4 out of 4 found this review helpful

Graphics-
Best so far!

Sound-
Crisp yet has silly/funny narration.

Gameplay-
Very responsive controls, complex yet easy(ish) to learn combo system.

Features-
Excellent- multiple single, multi, online, bonus modes with galleries & a superb character creation system

Replay Value-
Plenty- about 350 pieces of equipment to unlock, character creation system has hours on itself (personal experience here LOL). Then theres the forthcoming download content! New costumes, equipment, characterS? (Yoda) Will definitely keep you busy till the next installment.

Negative-
I can't seem to be able to fit my custom characters with a lightsabre! Mind you, this could come later!!

Otherwise, highly recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars Best Beat Em up ever!   August 5, 2008

Fantastic above expectations which were very high anyway.
The graphics are silky smooth, the change from one character to another is ferociously fast and love the character creation. As to whether we should have Star wars characters in the game is neither here nor there but Darth Vader looks great. Been through game on normal mode with lots of characters and totally addicted to it.

5 out of 5 stars Old faithful   August 1, 2008

Fans of SC2+3 should know what to expect - same old same old - nothing much different here. Having said that, why tinker with (almost) perfection?
Story mode, arcade mode, a quest this time up and down a tower, it's all pretty familiar. More customisable than before, and enhanced damage effects mean if you hit em hard enough their clothes fall off! Still within the realms of decency of course.
Fighting styles aren't as varied as, say, Tekken (coming soon, hopefully) and mastering only a couple should see you through to the end, but what has always been special about this game (in my opinion) is it's beauty - and through HDMI on an HDTV it LOOKS amazing.
Haven't tried online yet (need to change my ISP) but this is where the REAL fun should start.
There are several new characters depending on format, but despite owning both consoles I have no intention of getting it on 360 - who on earth wants to be Yoda? On PS3 Darth Vader kicks some mean butt with some fancy moves or what about the equally hard Jedi apprentice?
A gritty blood 'n guts beat-em-up it isn't, but highly recommended if you like your violence a little more refined.

5 out of 5 stars Soul Calibre Finally on PS3   August 5, 2008

Soul Calibre IV is a very worthy addition to any fight fans game collection.

I've had a few of the older verisions of the game and really enjoyed them - Soul Calibre was always a very good alternative to Tekken which had weapons and as such had a different feel to it.

This PS3 verions doesn't dissapoint as the gameplay mechanics that made the old games great are here again. There's a load of characters returning from the older games and also some guests inclusing Yoda, Darth Vader and a sith Jedi Apprentice to mix things up a bit!

The graphics are good or I should say the charcter graphics are very good but the background graphics seem a little short of this same high standard. It's a slightly odd look to see the ultra sharp characters in the less well defined backgrounds but that's my only gripe to be fair.

The one thing I remember Soul Calbre games for is there cheesy voice overs in story mode. SCIV has plenty more but these just add to the charm. The sound effects are great, really involving with the sounds of blades (or lightsabres!) blasting out from the speakers. There's a good selection of music including Star Wars music for the crossover characters.

There are a lot of modes including online play but each time I've tried to join a quick match on the internet the game has always given me a message saying it can't find a game for me. So actually that's gripe number 2. I've only had the game a day so I'm sure I will figure out a way of getting online. The usual story mode is available where you battle a few enemies in turn in a single stage and the Arcade mode is also present too where you fight 8 openents in turn. There are modes available to allow you to use custom characters to fight too. Training modes are available too - useful for learning complicated moves as the game shows an animation of the character perfomring the move so you know you've actually done it right. All in it's a solid selection and what you'd expect from a fighting game of this, ahem, calibre.

There's also a feature where by using the 'cash' earned in game you can purchase artwork of the characters to view in the galleries. I've always liked this about the Soul Calibre games.

Overall it's a great game, with lots of characters to learn and good presentation. It's a worthy addition to the series and great fun.

8.5 out of 10.
