Amazon.co.uk The Locust Horde is back and only you and your squad of elite soldiers stand between them and the death of every human being on the planet Sera. In Gears of War 2, entire cities are being destroyed in single attacks, and you must take the fight to the Locusts by battling them in their own underground lairs. You can play the whole of story mode with a friend | The Boomer enemies are back in many different varieties | The game’s ethos of “destroyed beauty” is still in full effect | Shoot the Ticker enemies before they explode in your face | The bestselling third-person shooter is back: bigger, better, and gorier than ever before. But you can't just blast your way through it--this game requires far more tactics and cunning than your usual mindless shooter. A refined cover system means you can use the enemy as “meat shields” as well as hide behind the fully destructible scenery. The graphics are looking better than ever, and the game is purposefully more bloody and violent than before. The story and characterisation has also been improved, making this an action game sequel with brains as well as brawn. Key Features - Brothers in arms: Have a friend join or leave your single player game whenever you want, and even battle together on different difficultly levels.
- Evolving enemies: You finally get a chance to take down the giant Brumak enemies, as well as even larger monsters and new creatures, such as the explosive Ticker.
- Practise makes perfect: Practice the multiplayer mode on your own with computer controlled “bots”--then use the new matchmaking system to find a real opponent of the same skill level.
- Chainsaw massacre: If you loved the chainsaw bayonet in the original game, you now can duel computer or human opponents with gaming’s messiest weapon attachment.
- Hordes of options: Try the new five-player Horde mode, where you all face off against an unending wave of enemies, or any of the seven other multiplayer modes.
About the Developer: Epic Games Based in North Carolina, Epic is well known for games such as Unreal Tournament and Gears of War. They also make the Unreal Engine graphics technology, which is used by many other companies in many different games.

Gentleman Start your Chainsaws! November 6, 2008 33 out of 44 found this review helpful
As my Xbox Amazon Clan friend's can confirm I got a copy this truly amazing game last night and I don't think there will be many people on the fence about this game as it is arguably the biggest exclusive game of year ....unless little Sack boy takes the world by storm that is?. Anyway .......
I don't think there are any Xbox owners out there that have not played the brilliant Gears of War (1) it was the one of the best 3rd person action games I have ever played! BUT it did have its flaws a far too short single player experience and an almost non existent story! If this really effected anyone's enjoyment of Gears 1 then you will be glad to know they are the main areas EPIC games have improved this time around. Gears 2 has been promised to have a good 2 hours on the game length of Gears 1 and a far more fleshed out story and having playing just an hour of the single player, I can confirm that EPIC have certainly seemed to have made good on the latter.
These promises are not the only improvements on Gears 2 the rest are very subtle to begin with...... the game opens with a narration by locust Queen bragging that the lightmass bomb from the end of Gears 1 had done nothing more than kill a few of them and well "annoy " the rest.. So the locusts are just as strong as ever and are still attacking! The first act see's Marcus, Dom and the gang in a hospital that is under attack by locusts.... Now from this opening level you could be forgiven to thinking that this was exactly the same as Gears 1 and hold no new surprises. BUT- After this short epilogue and GEARS OF WAR 2 logo is displayed on the screen, you start the next act and the real sequel emerges!
The start of the next act shows why this is not Gears 1.5 its Gears x 10 ...... the scale of this game is amazing as are the set pieces, the graphics are just stunning and so colourful, they make Gears1 look dull! The main game play has really took the idea of "What saint broke don't fix it" yes you wont need and training levels here (although there is a chance to train a rookie if you wish). This game uses al the strengths from Gears 1 and builds on it, there is slightly wider range of weaponry, and the guns (including the brilliant lancer) seem more accurate and sound a lot meatier, even the locust's weaponry is better (makes u not mind picking them up when ur COG ammo is dry, like I said the changes are subtle but make the whole experience even more enjoyable.
Yes this is the single player experience that will shut the mouths of any Gears critics out there, also as you all know this excellent campaign can also be enjoyed with a mate in co-op! (edited)
Multiplayer- I have not tried this yet, but as the pre release review below has stated, all your favourite game modes are there along with the new Locust horde mode ...... This looks awesome up to 5 Players have to fight off wave after wave of Locusts' ...... brilliant!
I just right this as my first impression of Gears 2 so apologise if its not too detailed, but I'm sure you all want to find out about the actually game first hand, I will just say to anyone that loved Gears 1 you aint seen nothing yet!

Great game, great purchase November 17, 2008 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
Very fun game, campaign is brilliant, the Horde battle game type is great and multi-player is very good.
Campaign is excellent, there are few flaws I've found, the only one I've found which caused me to stop for a while was a Locust who had managed to get under the floor.
Multi-player. This definitely has it's flaws, but these WILL be fixed. First of all, the gameplay is fantastic. I've had many good games with my friends, the satisfaction of getting headshots, watching people get blown to little pieces of flesh by your proximity mine really is spectacular. Meanwhile, there ARE connection issues. Matchmaking can often take a long time to connect, disconnections are common throughout playing and these really 'grinds my gears'.
Also if you've played Gears of War 1 you might be surprised to see the power of the Gnasher (Shotgun) reduced by quite a bit, which I found to be a bit of a disappointment, and lancers are a lot more effective. There is also the problem of the chainsaw attachments for the lancer, the way the chainsaw doesn't seem to 'knock down', and people can just run at you with chainsaws.
Campaign - 5/5, Very good overall, co-op is also fantastic Multiplayer - 4/5 Great gameplay but not without it's flaws, connection issues
Overall 4/5, I'd definitely reccomend this game, it is superb, just try not to get frustrated over the connection issues!
Best single player game for the 360 December 13, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Without doubt the finest single player game I have played for the 360. It has a great immersive storyline with numerous intertwined subplots and regular breathtaking cutscenes that had me hooked. There is more variety in gameplay compared to GOW 1 with alot more vehicle scenes and challenges which are a welcome break from just duck and cover shooting. The game is also reasonably challenging and requires some patience on higher difficulties. There have been a number of new innovations building on the first game including more vehicle action and the introduction of mortars and shields and a constant flow of objectives other than just shooting everything in sight and some interesting new bosses which are all highly challenging and different. I have been playing for 10-12 hours on the second highest difficulty and still haven't finished the game and the single player is alot longer and more varied than its rival Halo 3 which to be honest was much shorter as I completed it in under 8 hours on the higher difficulty.
The enemy AI is very impressive and all enemies are capable of dishing out serious damage and killing you and there is a superb variety unparalleled in any other game which really make the game stand out from the rest. From grunts with shotguns, boomers with rocket launchers, flying reavers, Kantus that automatically revive dead teamates, tickers that carry explosives on their back, snipers, soldiers with flamethrowers, soldiers that ride on the back of strange two legged creatures, soldiers with exploding arrows and grenades. All of the enemies require different strategies to beat and quick thinking and reflexes are required when you have a horde of different types of enemies coming at you from all sides and it is much more varied and challenging because of the range of enemies.
Overall I think they have taken the first game which was very good and rather than just sit on a tried and tested formula they have added new innovations and ideas to improve gameplay as well as having a more complex and emotional storyline to make the finest single player game currently available for the 360.
DO believe the hype ! November 8, 2008 7 out of 11 found this review helpful
If you fancy betting your mortgage on a title being played for years ahead both on and offline then this is it. GOW2 is pushing the boundaries of what the xbox is capable of. Stunning graphics and cinamatic scenes combined with a strong story and gameplay and of course gratitious violence. Great selection of weapons such as the chainsaw equipped lancer rifle and the gnasher shotgun and ways to execute the locust hordes such as headstomps and using them as meatsheilds and strong co-op and Live play. If you only have to purchase one game this year then let this be it, you will not be dissapointed.
The new best game ever! November 16, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
The first Gears Of War was a fantastic game, but despite innovative gameplay mechanics - most notably the active cover system - it never really felt as momentous as experience as playing a Halo game. For this reason, I was expecting GOW2 to be great, but never imagined it would be this great.
For a start, everything has been improved and maxed up as much as possible. There are many more weapons, Locust variants, giant creatures, and ways to play both single player and multiplayer than before. But most importantly, it's the first game I have played that truly lives up to its claim of a "cinematic experience". It really is like playing through a blockbuster action movie, and the characters of Marcus, Dom, Cole and Baird are the most detailed, most fleshed out there has been in a squad type videogame. You care about them - easy to say, but with how many other game characters is that really true? The story is told on an epic scale and the clever use of vehicle and "beast flying" sections will make you gasp in amazement first and then want to punch the air in excitement because flying a Locust Reaver through landscapes that flash by in the blink of an eye whilst fighting off an even larger pursuer is just so amazingly cool.
Gone are the "Quake" days where a lone marine can win a war by himself - in GOW2 at several times you find yourself literally surrounded by so many friendlies and enemies you can't count them! If this were a film, the cost of hiring extras alone would be half of the budget! But if lone-marining is your thing, there is a new game mode called Hoard where you can play the multiplayer maps against intelligent AI Locust, facing wave after wave of increasingly menacing opponents. And not just cannon fodder either - they duck, run for cover, retreat, flank you, and genuinely do their best to stay alive as well as beat you. Defeating them really is a satisfying experience.
To conclude, it's not just the best Xbox game ever; it's the best game ever without a doubt. The first game to beat Halo, and surely the new standard that every other game now has to be compared against.
