PS3 - Not a Games Console! November 15, 2008 180 out of 184 found this review helpful
So I ummed and ahhed for some time about buying the PS3. Why?
1. Don't have enough time to play Games (full time teacher and Dad to be) 2. Heard it was very noisy (untrue!) 3. Did I really need it?
I have to say since owning it now for some time, it really is a truly remarkable piece of kit. Why?
1. The Blu Ray is fantastic. - Just make sure you buy the Blu Ray remote as it's difficult to convince your other half you haven't just bought a games console when operating the Blu Ray with a joystick! That's 200 saved on buying a decent Blu Ray player then (stand alone players don't upgrade themselves either unlike the PS3).
2. It has integrated wireless so no wires which is dead easy to set up. Make sure you have your WEP handy
3. There is a full media server inside so you can browse all your photos, music, videos via your router and which ever other computers you have in the house. Very important for justifying it to the wife when the wedding pics come up in all their glory on your flatscreen.
4. Use it as a DVD player and it automatically upscales the DVD to make them look even better.
5. It has a good Internet Browser built in and the BBC are shortly bringing the iPlayer to PS3.
6. It is constantly being updated and improved via tried and tested over the air updates.
7. It looks fantastic. All black and shiny like the monoliths from 2001 a Space Odyssey.
8. Noise? What noise?? A barely audible slight, very distant hum on occasion. The XBox360 Elite sounds like one of those small portable vacuum cleaners and is really annoying in comparison.
9. It offers full 1080p playback via my Panasonic flatscreen and looks incredible as a result.
10. The Play TV add on turns it into a full on Personal Video Recorder with upscaling. That's another 150 saved then.
11. Oh -the games. Fantastic. Little Big Planet is beautiful, FIFA '09 is better than watching Spurs (not really an endorsement to buy I suppose :-)) and who needs Lara when you've got Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.
12. If 80GB isn't bug enough then... Google PS3 Hard Drive Upgrade. Undo 6 Philips screws, slide out the old Hard Drive and insert a 320GB Notebook one for 60 from Amazon. Now you can back up everything and all those dodgy 80's Student videos you ripped from VHS to DVD!
13. PlayStation Network is improving and is Free. The new Home is just round the corner... downloadable films etc.. social networking etc..etc..
So buy yourself a PS3 and watch it develop into your all in one entertainment centre!
No buyers remorse December 12, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
In order to get the message across I'll tell you a little about myself first. The last console I owned was about 17 years ago when Sega was tops. Since then I have ensured that my PC was high end in order to be able to play the games I wanted to and never ventured into the world of consoles again (except for a brief stint with the PSP). It was with some reluctance then that I read up on the PS3, wondering whether it was time to change my PC / laptop upgrading habits and just spend some money on a good console.
I bit the bullet a few weeks ago and got the 80gb model with a couple of games and a movie as part of an Amazon bundle and let me tell you I am extremely pleased so far. The graphics for the two games I got (Motorstorm Pacific Rift & Dead Space) are just phenomenal (on an HD TV) and my main concern about how I would go from working with a mouse and keyboard to a joystick was put to rest within the first few days. It's a refreshing change and actually a lot of fun as it is wireless and I have much more freedom of control than in front of a PC.
The fact that it has a blu-ray player integrated in the console makes it a fantastic bonus. The console itself is dead quiet, and just oozes quality.
In summary this console is fun, it's pretty (physically and what it produces), and if you're looking for some entertainment to pass away the boring winter nights it's well worth your hard earned cash.
Something you might not know. October 18, 2008 33 out of 37 found this review helpful
Sony supports an additional operating system (OS) on all of it's PS3 consoles. Not only do you get the Sony OS to play games, surf the web, play video's and music but you can install a Linux OS so that you can use the console as a PC.
A lot of people had issues in the past installing a Linux OS and to be fair it was a little tricky. I've just installed Yellow Dog Linux (YDL) and not only is it easy to install but it's free to download and use. Yup, I did say free, as in free.
If you use a Windows PC or a Mac then getting round YDL is easy and you'll pick it up quickly. Just remember when you're making your decision as to which console to buy, ask yourself, could you do with a free PC too.
I reckon you can't go wrong with the PS3, free online play and 2 OS's in one box. Is there any other choice.

What an impressive bit of kit this is, i have just traded my 360 in for this and it just punts the 360 into the weeds. Dont get me wrong i was very impressed with the 360 in terms of its game library and live of course but the ps3 has just so much more going for it Apart from the games and bluray capabilities you can surf the net, play music, view pictures, free online gaming, the list just goes on and on. Ok the online service needs some tweaking i believe but will undoubtedly improve and dont forget it is free and the games library is still a bit small but there are enough decent games in there if you look around. I believe once the developers truly unlock the full power of this machine we will see something very special The interface is also very easy to navigate around and will be familiar to anyone who has owned a PSP, the glossy finish is very nice but i am not totally sure about the overall design but thats a small price for what lies inside - saying that the 360 isnt exactly a beauty itself. The controller is also an improvement on the 360 being a lot lighter and less bulky, one thing though im not sure about the triggers i personally preferred the 360's, the sixaxis also adds another dimension to games giving it a slighter more interactive feel. All i need now is for our old widescreen to give up the ghost and then we can upgrade to a full HD system, im led to believe this just makes it even more impressive and starts to unlock its true potential To summarise then if you do want a very good games library and the very good live service stick with the 360 but if you want all the additional features and increased power go for the PS3, one last thing - the noise !, my god what a difference, my 360 sounded like a plane taking off (ok a slight exaggeration but you get my drift !), the ps3 is near silent just a low hum in the background and this does make a big difference if your using it for watching movies etc. Thankyou for reading and i hope this helps you make a well informed decision
Good for Films & Games. October 11, 2008 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
Something people sometimes overlook is the fact that the PS3 not only has a top of the range Blu-Ray player (which has software updated regularly to keep up to date), it also upscales DVDs. This will give your DVD collection a boost and make them look, in some cases, not that far away from a Blu-Ray disc on a HD ready TV.
As for the games. The PS3 has a little while to go until developers really get to grips with optimising games for it. There are many great games just around the corner though, Far Cry 2, Killzone 2, New Call Of Duty, Little Big Planet, Fallout 3, Dead Space...
Never been a better time to buy a PS3 in my opinion.
