Amazon.co.uk What does the American Dream mean today? For Niko Bellic, fresh off the boat from Europe, it is the hope he can escape his past. For his cousin, Roman, it is the vision that together they can find fortune in Liberty City, gateway to the land of opportunity. As they slip into debt and are dragged into a criminal underworld by a series of shysters, thieves and sociopaths, they discover that the reality is very different from the dream in a city that worships money and status, and is heaven for those who have them and a living nightmare for those who don't.Beginning with the 1997 release of the original Grand Theft Auto, the GTA series has been one of the most prolific, controversial and down right entertaining franchises in video games history. This pedigree of success guarantees that the highly anticipated eleventh game in the series, Grand Theft Auto IV, will garner at least as much attention if not more.
Return to Liberty City. | The dream as Niko expected it. View larger. | There's always a catch. View larger. | But some skills are international. View larger. | The Plot Grand Theft Auto IV is a brand new adventure in the GTA universe following the experiences of Nikolai "Niko" Bellic, a new immigrant from an undisclosed eastern European country whose troubled pa st and the persuasion of his cousin Roman have brought him to the fictional Liberty City. Unfortunately, Niko's search for the American Dream and a much needed fresh start, hits an immediate snag when the rags to riches story Roman spun to pique Niko's interest is exposed as not only a complete fabrication, but a ploy to enlist Niko's well-known skills as a tough guy against the ample list of enemies clamouring for Roman's debt-ridden blood. Because Roman is the only person Niko knows in Liberty City he begrudgingly accepts his role as Roman's protector despite the deception. But as time goes on Niko comes into his own, and his experience on the wrong side of the tracks proves more valuable than he could have ever imagined as he fights for survival and later supremacy on the crime ridden streets of Liberty City.Game Environments Based on several of the boroughs of New York City and parts of New Jersey, Liberty City, familiar to players of previous games in the series, has been entirely redesigned for GTA IV. Players can expect visible detail down to the weeds growing in the cracks in the sidewalk, cars and buildings of visibly different ages and a much greater level if verticality in the buildings and bridges that they are able to explore as Niko moves through the city streets. In addition, pedestrians in GTA IV are much more realistic. No longer simply moving cardboard cut-outs, these NPCs are intelligent, modern, human representations that laugh, cry, eat, drink, use cell phones and ATMs, and talking amongst themselves regardless of Niko's interaction with them. Gameplay Historically GTA games have focused heavily on mission-based play, requiring successful completion of fixed tasks in order for players to progress through the game, but this has changed to a great extent in GTA IV. Players will experience an entirely new and exciting emphasis centred on the blending of on-mission and off-mission play, resulting not only in an increased sense of realism, but more interesting and unrestricted gameplay. Features Aside from the car jacking and a detailed city environment here are the new features for GTA IV: - Improved combat system - Now you can use cover and also a target lock system, which allows you to take out targets with greater ease and accuracy. Plus, you can engage in some hand-to-hand combat if you can't get your hands on a piece quick enough.
- Cell phone - Not just for basic phone calls anymore. Use your in-game cell phone to receive missions via SMS, snap photos, and ZiT (tag) songs that can be downloaded exclusively on Amazon.com/mp3.
- Free time - In between missions you can take advantage of "me" time. There are gentleman's clubs, comedy clubs, bowling alleys, and bars, which all house unique activities.
- Take a break from the storyline - A variety of side missions allow you to help run a car service, "borrow" cop cars, assassinate targets, help solve problems for those on the street, or take to the air with stunt jumps that are scattered all over the city.
- Control your own fate - Throughout the game choice moments will arrive causing you to make a decision that will affect relationships and money.
Multiplayer Give Niko a rest and create your own multiplayer "hero." GTA has added multiplayer modes allowing you to take your creation out to play online in competitive, co-op, and free form modes. Competitive mode has you fighting against the cops, jacking cars, or racing to finish odd jobs. Co-op challenges you and your friends with various tasks including Hangman's NOOSE where you are responsible for escorting a wanted kingpin to a safe extraction point. Freeform lets you and 15 others lose on Liberty City. Use this mode to hit up the bar and play virtual darts versus each other or head out to the streets and set up your own drag races. If you can dream it, you can do it in Freeform mode.

A good game, but not as good as its predecessors November 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The GTA series is one ive always loved on ps2 and spent so many hours playing since I first got my hands on the amazing GTA3 to the still amazing GTA:SA.
However, this latest installment is not as good for several reasons including the very weak and boring storyline which at several times had me yawning and the missions all felt repetitive and not so GTA like. It mainly consisted of: go there, kill this person, chase this person, kill this person, check this place out, kill some people. There was no fun missions like the old rc helicopter or burning down a cannabis farm or bike hopping along loads of buildings etc. The missions were very repetitive and boring.
This wasn't helped out by the very dull city which although was nicely detailed and lifelike, it was also the same grey roads and houses no matter which island you were on and every island felt like the same. A great thing about GTA's are the fact that when you unlock a new island it really feels like you've entered a new place but in this one it didn't.
Other annoyances were the way the cars handled which felt like they took a crack at making the cars have more realistic handling but at the same time took the fun out if it. Also the graphics which for the big city there rendering were quite good but as far as next gen goes, pretty average. Especially the ps3 version which having played both ps3/x360 versions on same tv the ps3 version suffered more blurry/less sharp image for whatever reason(despite hdmi advantage). Another thing was the money: you can buy guns or... guns or... guns, yeah thats it where's the properties? casinos? custom paint job? engine upgrades? place to collect cars so you can choose the one you want? Last annoying thing was actually the cheats which although the phone was a nice storage place, it kept disappearing when shot or in water, and the cheats this game had were very limited, although some people don't like cheating, I always liked the fun cheats GTA's had for second playthrough and for general messing around which this one lacked.
However there is still some great improvements over previous versions like the graphics which although average for next gen, there still a great improvement on previous versions. Also little details were done very well like the car taking damage like smacks and gunshots would show where the car was actually hit and looked very good. The cover system was a nicely implemented feature that added a new dimension to gameplay. Also people walked and reacted with objects realistically and it really felt like you were driving down new york. Multiplayer was a very nice addition and had many great modes to choose from and being able to use the whole city while online is better than I expected.
Overall I think this game is still a great game and alot better than most games, but for the most part it isn't as good as previous versions and I hope that Rockstar address the issues for the next GTA.
Great game, but needs just abit more madness November 5, 2008 Great game
In response to some of the other reviewers I find the driving more of a challenge as I dislike the more arcade-style driving games. I find the shooting cover system works really well and I haven't come across any faults, even though I bought the game the day it came out.
I have given the game 5 stars overall because of the pure beauty of Liberty City. Sure, it may not have the best graphics, but the scenes are magnificent. Only four stars for fun as the off-line play does get boring after a while, but the online play can be mental.
Hope the next game comes out soon, and that it does inherit a mix of IV's beauty and San Andreas's huge map and absolute craziness. A Mercs 2 style "blow everything up" game engine would also be really cool.
Overall, a great game but needs a bit more madness in it.

Great graphics. Great story. Great gameplay. Great online play. Great Game.
a dissapointment October 11, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
as an avid grand theft auto fan and after the brilliant san andreas on ps2 i was expecting this to surpass it with ease but was very dissapointed a another reviewer states it's like a grand theft auto 3 add on and they couldnt be more right i found the car handling to be very over the top and got bored of it before i had even got off the 1st island in my opinion no where near as good and as addictive as vice city or san andreas. rockstar need to think more about the gaming side and not how great it looks. as this seems the case when GTA made its debut on the ps3
gta 4 let down October 7, 2008 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
just like the title says i was really let down by gta4 for so many reasons, here are some of the things that cheesed me off with the game that so many magazines gave 10/10???? i would give it 7/10 being generous. cheesed off with.... acting is poor and the characters have no charisma or charm, nico is a bland pot bellied immigrant who is just not cool at all and does missions for money he cant spend on anything?! story is really weak, characters appear with no reason for them being in the story and no explanation as to how you got tangled up with them either. driving with external view is rubbish, car handles like a bar of soap but strangely handling is fixed with bonnet view? i prefer to see the car though but it's like you are driving a ferrari with bonnet view and a citroen 2cv with a front puncture in external view. the missions...oh dear the missions,we have the whole of new york at our disposal and do we use it?? nope...drive here shoot him, drive there get some money.that's it!!! what about a fight on top of the empire state,oh dear you cant go up there or even through the front door.what about going up the statue of liberty? nope ground floor only.loads of scope for side missions, nope dont bother! there is only one mission that i found a bit tricky and that was the bank job but it wasnt as good as the one in san andreas, nothing is as good as it was in san andreas or better other than the graphics but...... the graphics they are ok at best, when the light is just right they look ok but most of the time they use too much sun bloom or filters so it looks a lot like a ps2 and a half game. side missions are few and are really boring, the game itself is like when you ask for something really cool at xmas and end up with a brown cardigan. wait for saints row 2,play vice city or san andreas, count the hairs on your arm just dont bother with this!!
