5 out of 5 stars Why not The House of the Dead Trilogy???   August 20, 2008
25 out of 26 found this review helpful

Thankfully, developers are beginning to realise that the Wii is perfect for light gun games. The House of the Dead series is one of the greatest in the genre, and the Wii conversion retains everything that made these games so special in the arcades.

Graphically, nothing has been updated, so Part 3 obviously looks better than Part 2. A few modes have been bundled in, like Boss mode and a few tutorials, unlockable extras etc. But Arcade mode really is where its at.

There are multiple branching paths throughout each stage, which usually depend on whether a civilian is rescued or killed. This provides amazing replayability. On a similar note, those worried that unlimited credits wouold ruin this game need not worry. There is a set number of credits when played for the first time, and every failed attempt to complete either game, increases the number of credits available or the players maximum health. This really helps prevent sticking points, especially boss battles, or dying at exactly the same point again and again. Admittedly, the feature has been lifted from the PlayStation versions of Time Crisis, but a great addition regardless.

The co-op mode is also great fun and just like the arcade, player 2 can jump into the action at any time during play.

The House of the Dead 2 & 3 return is incredibly nostalgic for those who have played it, and still a fantastic light gun game for those who havent.
But would it have been too much to ask for the original House of the Dead as well? The House of the Dead trilogy would have sounded so much better too! But a small gripe with an otherwise brilliant package.

5 out of 5 stars The Dead Return One More Time   May 23, 2008

Being a fan of Light Gun games and zombies I have been waiting for house of the dead 2/3 since it was first announced, Now if you have played the games previously on Dreamcast (HOTD2) or Xbox (HOTD3) there will not really be anything new to see as the games are more or less exact ports of these games, if you have only played it in the arcade though you have likely missed a lot of the game even if you put enough pound coins in to complete it as there are multiple paths.

House of The Dead 2

The graphics are Dreamcast quality so not the best in this day and age so luckily the game play fun. The game is really easy to get the hang of, the camera is in first person view and automatically moves leaving you to focus on blasting zombies and saving innocent people, if the zombies get too close you will get attacked and loose a life. Some of the zombies are slow and easy to blast then as you progress faster and more dangerous creatures will start showing up. Like I said earlier certain things you do in game will change the path your character takes leading to new areas e.g. the second level starts with a car coming at you with a zombie on the windscreen attacking the guy inside, if you shoot the zombie the man stops the car and you walk up some steps and through a town but if you don't shoot the zombie he crashes the car in to a shop window you walk through the shop and through a few more buildings taking a completely different path through the level. This adds a lot of replay value to the game as it's impossible to see everything without multiple play throughs. At the end of each level is a boss, all the bosses are quite good and require different tactics to defeat obviously the difficulty of the bosses increases as you progress.

There is also a original mode as a extra, playing through this game you can find hidden power ups in creats/barrols etc then the next time you play through the game you can use the power ups such extra continues, more powerful weapons and many more. Also a boss attack mode where you can practise beating the bosses.

House Of The Dead 3

The Game play is More or less the same for house of the dead 3, graphics are improved over HOTD2. Sega decided to remove the multiple path game play from HOTD3 after the first level anyway, the main differences in HOTD3 I feel is the bosses that are much improved for instance in one of the levels the boss is chasing you the entire level and every time you shake him off and loose him he bursts through a wall and comes at you some more loose him again blast a few zombies turn the next corner, there he is. With the exception of the first and last level you get to select the order you play the levels in so I play the hardest ones first.

Aswell as the arcade game there is a time attack mode where you get extra time for shooting zombies in the head or killing multiple enemies in one shot, if the time runs out you die so you have to be quick.

The aiming is very good in both the games the curser is on screen so you can see where you are aiming to reload you point off screen, if you want to use a gun attachment you can calibrate the Wiimote to your gun and make the onscreen curser disappear to make it more like the arcade.

Over all even though these are not new games they are still great fun and have plenty to offer, with house of the dead 2/3 Ghost squad, Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles and Links cross bow training the Wii is starting to build up quite a nice selection of light gun games so get out there and start playing them.

5 out of 5 stars They "RETURN" indeed... But..   April 6, 2008

Right, so this package includes two of the Arcade Classics "THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD" maybe they could have added the first?

Anyway, i recently just got this for the thrill off just owning Zombies... Like i did with RESIDENT EVIL THE UMBRELLA CHRONICLES which actually has better controls since i do not have to configure anything... But, with THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD... I just simply can not find a way to AIM!! Yes, there is a Colabiration Option, but that does not help me at all.. It worked only about twice... But why does it not now? With THE UMBRELLA CHRONICLES i can freely Aim and Shoot but with this title, it does not work... So i Colabirate it to check it out.. All i get is a way TOO fast curser moving around so i can not concentrate on where i am Aiming... And yes i do enable the curser which can also be disabled...

If anyone can help me... Please comment me back! I would appreciate it!

Aside from that... The Graphics are nice... But a Game does not really need good Graphics does it? The Music sounds nice... Voice Acting is alright... The Controls... Heh, i need help on that one.. I use the Wii Zapper (the one that was included Free with LINK'S CROSSBOW TRAINING) as i try to Aim.. I get nothing! LINK'S CROSSBOW TRAINING allows me to Aim freely as does RESIDENT EVIL THE UMBRELLA CHRONICLES... I have yet to play GHOST SQUAD... But this is the only and most important part for a Game... And without it, it is pointless! Since i have hardly ever played THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD in the Arcades... I do not know what i am actually doing... I read the INSTRUCTION BOOKLET... But after revising that, nothing still...

5 out of 5 stars Great None-Brainer Enterainment   April 3, 2008

My fingers are feeling very crooked from the light-gun use of this game, and that is how enjoyably addictive the House of the Dead games are.

This game is a must for Wii gamers and it puts you right back into the arcade world without having to leave the house (it's also a great laugh because of the appalling dialogue acting from both games). The game-play and control is simple but that's nothing compared to the hours of enjoyment you can get. It's a cut above all the other shooter games for the Wii.

Can't wait for them to release the far superior House of the Dead 4.

5 out of 5 stars You Know What Sega Needs On The Wii...   April 27, 2008

House Of The Dead 4! If you've ever played it in the arcades, you'll know why! The Wii's Motion Sensor would be perfect for it, I just hope Sega reads this and takes it in to consideration.
