Amazon.co.uk Review
If there really isn't any such thing as bad publicity then Mercenaries 2 is already doing superbly. It certainly already has its fair share of infamy, after being denounced by the Venezuelan government as propaganda for the U.S. Army and even dragging Bono (who part owns developer Pandemic) into a row over its probity. Mind you North Korea weren't too keen about the first game either and that turned out all right. The reason poor Bono's name has been dragged into the dirt is that the game's plot revolves around a U.S. led invasion of Venezuela after a dictator takes control in a coup. It's pretty hard to get offended about a game as gleefully silly as this though as its interests are clearly not politics but simply blowing things up as creatively as possible. As before you're dropped into the war zone and free to ply your mercenary trade with whomever you want. However, this time you're in charge of your own PMC (Private Military Company) and get to set up your own base and recruit your own soldiers. Owning your own PMC gives you a lot more control over how exactly you play the game in what is essentially Grand Theft Auto in a warzone. Everything you see can be completely destroyed from innocuous shrubbery to be the biggest buildings. You can now swim as well and there's lot more vehicles and gadgets, from helicopters to grappling hooks. With an online co-op mode as well even Hugo Chavez couldn't fail to be entertained (maybe). GTA with no teeth September 12, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Got this game on download and the first thing that hit me is where is the tutorials? Answer there is none well none that actually teach anything. also i bought this on download so no manual for me. so when i did a ahem "helicopter tutorial" i had no idea how to use the winch or if there was one. still dont since the tutorial is actually a timed mini game. so started playing and it hit me that this is gta3 but with bikes that steer like trucks. sports cars that crawl along. infact think of the original gta3 and rub dirt on it make it a bit worse then release it in a years time so its out of date.
there is so may gripes i have with this game you can map the controls but unlike gta3 it dosent tell you what the controls do in cars and stuff. graphics are ok bit glitchy at points and sound sometimes fails to start. it is fun though and it has a sort of god feel to it. where by your a merc thats hard as nails and god like. but as other people have said what do the symbols mean. there is in the control map legend for 4 of them but there are others. it took me ages as to find the foot with arrows coming out of it isnt kick or crouch or rocket boots but jump. and another grip is who ever set up the controls didnt acound for pc users. yes using the mouse to aim is good but i dont want to have to drag it across the entire length of my desk just to do 180. thats even with the sensitvity up full.
if you really really want this game get it at half this price. else wait for gta4. me im going to play it too compleation just because i spent the cash and cant get a refund but after that its going to be forgoten about unless there is something amazingly cool ive not seen yet

These kinds of things just make you not want to buy these games. I wouldn't have if I'd known
Also dynamic ingame advertising - which you can blowup because 'people get pee'd off with the being plastered all over in their game' . They actually said that at E3 2008. So they know very well we don't want them - yet if they can get us to hate them enough to want to destroy them then they've got us looking directly at them to aim at them.... And yet a full price game
Co-op only over internet. No Lan.
Big Letdown September 10, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This review is purely to point out some of the bad points of the game 1st off you cant do high resolutions on this game... my montior supports upto 1680x1050 or something like that but this game will only let you run it in a much lower resolution...2nd the graphics are totally rubbish... the ps3 and xbox looked alot better which made me get this game for the pc but the pc version looks really crap to be honest overall its just a really bad port and i would avoid and get stalker clear sky or crysis warhead (2weeks away) instead
not all that bad October 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
this game is ok, not amazing, not crap. just ok. very similar in many ways to the first, but then different in so many others. at first i was reminded a little of just cause, (a slightly flawed near masterpiece that could have gone so the other way but didnt) but i think that was just the gameplay and setting. its nothing amazing and if you are expecting great strides with this then you are barking up the wrong tree.
im not playing so much now, as i have foolishly bought loads of new games together over the last few months and keep flitting between, although i am definately concentrating on far cry 2.
all in all, it passes 30 minutes here and there in that old gta way where you could just dip in and out, do a mission, wreak havoc, drive round aimlessly.
oh and dont get me wrong, im not comparing this to any other games i mentioned, just offering similarities, where i felt i was reminded of said games.
buy it if you fancy it, but there are better games out there at the moment i feel.
Stay well clear September 9, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Bought this title expecting something really good to get my teeth in to. Shame that the graphics are at least 3 years old, most native resolution for 17" an 19" screens are not supported (1024x1280).
Reedeming features.... if you like seeing things being blown up then its a novelty for 10 minutes or so.
EA have done us no favours with yet another poor title that seems to be a console port.
This title could have been excellent, but unfortunately its mediocre at best.
3/10
