Manufacturer's Description
The third game in the Fallout series, Fallout 3 is a singleplayer action role-playing game (RPG) set in a post-apocalyptic Washington DC. Combining the horrific insanity of the Cold War era theory of mutually assured destruction gone terribly wrong, with the kitschy naivety of American 1950s nuclear propaganda, Fallout 3 will satisfy both players familiar with the popular first two games in its series as well as those coming to the franchise for the first time.

The Story: Vault 101 - Jewel of the Wastes
For 200 years, Vault 101 , a fallout shelter, has faithfully served the surviving residents of Washington DC and its environs, now known as the Capital Wasteland. Though the global atomic war of 2077 left the US all but destroyed, the residents of Vault 101 enjoy a life free from the constant stress of the outside world. Giant Insects, Raiders, Slavers, and yes, even Super Mutants are all no match for superior Vault-Tec engineering. Yet one fateful morning, you awake to find that your father has defied the Overseer and left the comfort and security afforded by Vault 101 for reasons unknown. Leaving the only home you've ever known, you emerge from the Vault into the harsh Wasteland sun to search for your father, and the truth.

Key Features:

5 out of 5 stars This game is exceptional....   November 1, 2008

I have been a big fan of all things fallout (except the rubbish Brotherhood of Steel game)since the first game in 1997. This game gets rid of the retrictive isometric view and puts you firmly into the world. I have been waiting for this game for a long time and it certainly doesn't disappoint.

As for a the moans on here, I really do feel they are unjustified. Yes there is a basic Securom, but it does NOT limit the number of installs. As for bugs; well i've been playing for 3 days now and have not come across a single bug. The install was long (not Turok long though) but went very smoothly. I didn't have to adjust any settings or update drivers like I did for both Crysis and Mass Effect.

If you love the Fallout world, Oblivion, in depth RPGs and freedom of choice, there really is no better game than Fallout 3.

5 out of 5 stars IT'S A BRAND NEW POSTAPOCALYPTIC DAWN   October 28, 2008

I am old enough to have played the original game when it first came out in 1997. I was a great fan of the series that followed and, thus, was very eager to get my hands on this latest installment. In a short sentence: FALLOUT-3 is A DREAM COME TRUE!

It is a cRPG game in which the player can alternate between the First and Third person perspective roaming a world comparable in size with OBLIVION. The action has moved from Vault 13 and Southern California to Vault 101 and Washington, D.C. and the story brakes away from the previous bloodlines. However, the atmosphere of the original has been maintained and its scents sharpened: veterans will find it fitting like and old glove - whereas the new gamers are in store for a bag of pleasant surprises.

The graphics are wonderful, the guns detailed and the environments highly interactive. Short of a screenshot, imagine what would HalfLife-2 would look if released today. And similar to HL2, FALLOUT-3 does not require an...ubercomputer to run smoothly. Once you see a NPC move though, you understand where the corners were cut.

Character customization is carried out in great style using the new and improved PIP-BOY at the beginning. You exit the vault and the harsh reality of a world that barely survived annihilation slaps you on the face. Adapt or perish.

The main storyline is there to be followed but FALLOUT-3 offers the greatest number of alternative choices I have ever encountered in a game! There is always a great number of paths to follow in order to achieve any goal - but every choice comes with a consequences tag. This is common feature of most classic cRPGs but in FALLOUT-3 I saw it implemented like never before. If nothing else, this sends replayability through the roof.

Side-quests offer little besides distraction and experience points (XP) to be spend on character improvement. XP are gained solely by completing quests, emerging victorious from fights, finding locations, picking locks and hacking terminals - and they are not limited by the action they were earned. Leveling up is based on 7 basic attributes [Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility & Luck - acronym?;)] that, in turn, affect your (13) specific skills. Since leveling up is capped at Level-20, the game designers wanted to encourage replaying the game. On the other hand, it also means that your character will never realize its full potential (in case you are wondering why I withheld a star from FUN, that's the second half of it).

The game is violent and gory but well within tasteful limits. Not so with the language - but it is tradeoff with realism. In a radioactive world, Sunday-school niceties are bound to go out the window.
What deserves a special mention is V.A.T.S. (:Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System) which opens new vistas in cRPG design. It is an ingenious system which lets you pause the game and target specific body parts of your opponents. The success of your attack still depends on your skills but the end effect is cinematic and amazing (remember SWORDFISH?).

After the nuclear summer of 2008 (with all the SecuROM-defective EA releases), this seems like a postapocalyptic dawn indeed! BETHESDA decided to listen to the gaming community and did NOT cripple this beautiful game with any idiotic DRM scheme. Inputting a serial number and a DVD-check is more than reasonable.
The publishers of FALLOUT-3 understand that there is a fine balance between "protecting the product" and..."insulting your own customers". And they obviously view respect as the two way street that it is - and for this they deserve our support: buy this game, today.

Voting with our wallets is the only argument the gaming industry cannot afford to ignore. And it is about time to cast some well deserved positive votes.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

5 out of 5 stars Fallout 3 - The Truth   November 10, 2008

Ok before I get onto the game itself I feel obliged to mention two things.

Firstly DRM - This game uses a disk cheker - end of, the 1 star reviews that mention otherwise are misinformation by trolls, I hate Securom as applied by EA and Ubisoft but that system is not inplace in this game - END OF.

Secondly Crashing - For the first day this game froze like anything, then I updated my graphics driver and it ran like a dream. If you cannot properly maintain your PC and it's hardware buy an Xbox or a PS because a PC does require some tweaking at times, always has and probably always will.

Ok now the good part, the game itself.

From the whole character creation process to the early days in the vault the game educates you while also immersing you into the post nuclear world. When leavign the vault the imagary that people complain is grey and desolate is perfect, what do you expect with a post nuclear environent pretty red flowers growing in radioactive earth.

The way this game plays is entirely upto you and your conscience, you can do it the good way, the bad way the inbetween way, the combinations and options are incredible, and the way the game unfolds is different every time.

I am still enjoying this game and still exploring it, but I could not possibly give it a lower score then 5, even with the issues that I put down as mere teething troubles that any PC user should expect time from time, this game has and still is a joy to play.

Bethesda has official forums that outline potential PC problems and how to fix them so please use them if you too had trouble and then enjoy the game before you post a half cooked review based upon heresay

5 out of 5 stars I was shocked and exhiliarated. I Laughed and I cried.   November 10, 2008

I finally completed this game last night. Absolutely awesome is all I can say. From the moment you step out into the capital wasteland (the bits in the vault were a bit boring, but I suppose a good excuse to teach you the mechanics in a safe environment, right up to the final battle, this game is just awesome.

Bethesda have managed to stay true to the spirit of the original games, the dry humour, occasional sad nuances (at first I didn't understand the "big town" thing, but later it becomes obvious), excessive violence (blowing people's heads off with a shotgun is especially bloody) and awkward moral choices. Oh, and lots of old music.

Amazingly, they have also redeemed themselves for the soullessness of Oblivion - this game has plenty of atmosphere, people walk around and talk to each other, sit down for dinner, go to their jobs (the few that have them). Super-mutants shout challenges before running at you with hammers and other weapons. Sometimes you see a fight that has nothing to do with you - for example a town gets attacked by radscorpions, or an abandoned robot starts clearing out the mutant cockroaches in a factory.

The graphics and sound are gorgeous. The screenshots on the box (and this site) don't get across the *enormity* of the ruined landscape. There are some areas (e.g. the town of Arefu) that are actually vertigo-inducing.

Oh, and whatever DRM they have used in the game, good on them for making it unobtrusive. I put the disk in, installed the game (no CD key, no registering, nothing) then played the game.

I did have a couple of software crashes during the last week; usually these truly infuriate me, but in this case I was able to forgive them, the game is otherwise so brilliant, polished, and complete. I think I would have gotten a little bored with it, just when the final mission came up. One day I'll go back and try again, I know I missed a lot of the sub-plots this time around. What were the radio masts for ?

5 out of 5 stars Just great   November 2, 2008

First of all, don't take any notice of the negative reviews about securom and all that, all that is in place is apparently a disc check, altough I've played the game about 5 times over several days, all without the disc in the tray so I don't know.

As for the game its just amazing, I found no bugs or glitches and seeing a head get blown off in slow mo never gets old, the story plays out well with the freedom to do almost anything.
The only down side is that by exploring early on it is quite possible to skip whole sections of the story and feel lost, just always keep seprate saves when going out exploring.
I hated Oblivion, even though this is based on the same engine the look and feel is competly diffrent.

A must buy.
