2 out of 5 stars Shallow and glitchy   April 20, 2008

The only thing that developer Cauldron has kept true to Ravens original games is gratuitous violence. Admittedly, there is much satisfaction to be had blasting someone's leg off with a Shotgun, but the violence can get very OTT after a while. There is a low violence option, but Payback would be no fun like this.

The originals moustachioed hero John Mullins has been replaced by a mercenary called Mason, a walking stereotype. Hearing some of his lines;
"What one of them survived...I must be slipping" is enough to make anyone cringe.
Mason also has no partner, feeling like a missed opportunity for co-op play.
The original games' base of operations, The Shop, is now only accessed via cut scenes and menu screens, which is slightly disappointing. In fact, more effort could have been made to make the experience more seamless. Levels begin and end abruptly, and often start in a completely different place to where the previous ended.

For a game that prides itself on OTT violence, it doesn't disappoint on the weapons front. There is a massive selection, but each level contains enemies with more or less the same weapon. This leaves your weapon choices useless early on, so don't spend too long agonising over which Shotgun looks best.
The sprint feature is a good idea, but thanks to the limiting control schemes (3 are available but differ little) its frequently used at the wrong time.

The graphics do the job with some nice lighting and textures. Yet the overall look is fairly cartoon-like and environments do feel closed and limited, especially when replaying levels. Locations are also few in number, Middle Eastern villages and jungles being order of the day. It isn't until the end levels that some variety is thrown in, with garages, a nightclub and even a brothel to fight through. Sadly, they aren't particularly exciting and are just one corridor fire fight after another.

The majority of the game feels more like Serious Sam than Call of Duty 4; mowing down wave after wave of identical enemies. Attempts at variety only frustrate, trying to protect a prisoner being one sticking point. Enemies have no AI other than to run at you, and at times 4-5 of them line up to be killed. Levels also have invisible trigger points, meaning that passing a certain point makes enemies appear, even in areas cleared. On many occasions, they appear from thin air.

Payback also has its fair share of glitches. Most noticeable is after a grenade attack, where dismembered limbs will spin around on the spot. It can look quite disturbing. And why, in 2008, dead bodies have to fade away after 30 seconds remains a mystery.
It's difficult to recommend this, even with so many average shooters available on PS3.

I've bought some rubbish first person shooters in the past, but this one takes the biscuit. Apart from the pathetically bad enemy AI, the identical looking enemies and short missions, this is just another PS2 game masquerading as a PS3 one. It's actually worse than the original SOF titles that came out years ago on PC and PS2.
It arrived on Saturday morning and I completed this game in one sitting - in less than four hours. I couldn't believe it when the credits started rolling and to say I was disappointed in this game would be an understatement. How Activision can bring something like COD4 out and follow it up with this rubbish is beyond comprehension. Avoid.
