Amazing!!!! December 21, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Mirror's Edge is a game like no other before. There are so many racing games exactly the same, platformers, shoot -em-ups etc. But there has never been anything like Mirror's Edge before - completely unique and utterly stunning.
This game has been nominated for a golden joystick and it deserves 5 stars on innvoation and creativity alone. This game draws you in right from the start where you play as Faith - a runner. As a runner you can make death-defying leaps and jumps from building to building across a beautifully-mapped and visually stunning cityscape. Make amazing moves from pipes, rooves, planks, boxes etc.
The graphics are amazing and so are the interactions with people and objects. You can sneak behind guards and steal their guns, punch and kick your way past the blues and their sniper rifles as you seek to escape their chase.
Sometimes you get stuck where to go and then get completely obliterated by the cops, missed jumps etc can also be annoying; but this game is awesome. 5 stars all the way, and at this price it's a must have for all PS3 owners.

After playing the FULL GAME...
The graphics and atmosphere in this game is awesome. Its really bright, crisp and clear. As you jump from roof top to roof top there is a real sense of depth to this game. If you've got time, stop and watch the TV screens, look at the adverts - in general have a good look around this beautiful city.
The loading scenes provide the cutscenes for the game so you're not wasting precious playing time watching the cutscenes. The scenes themselves are very nicely done..presented in a cartoon style movie which is really effective.
The actual running is amazing and after a level or two practice you can run, jump, wall climb with great speed. Combat is fluid presenting tactical skill (such as getting the enemy on their own before going for the kill). The levels are nicely built with a great mixture of jumping, running, fighting and puzzles.
My grippes are:
-Its short - but, there is so many rooftops you can jump on and off without it getting repetitive (I think its a good length) -At times it can get really really hard. Due to the fact you spoend most of your time being chased (normally by a helicopter) you have little time to think and you have nail each jump every time - first time. -Checkpoints are quit far apart. I lost the will to play, after I died it took me back to a checkpoint 15minutes worth of gameplay away (even though it said it had saved after that!) -Not enough to statisfiy a hardcore gamer. I dont see hardcore gamers putting down BFBC, COD4 and other blockbuster hits to play this solidly...
Its an awesome game...but something that people will play because its 'refreshing' and 'new'.
In all...buy it...you have too!!!!!!!!!!! But dont think it'll keep you entertained for hours upon hours..
So Refreshing November 14, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
And that's really it. Mirror's Edge is such a welcome refreshment in the sea of rubbish that is video games. Ok so i'm being a little harsh, it's not all that bad.
Anywhoo, suppose i'll start with the controls as they're a little wierd in terms of button placement. L1 controls all forward/up motions and L2 controls all backwards/down motions. It sounds a little odd i know, but the gameplay is all about keeping your momentum going.
The main character Faith moves around like Altair (Assassins Creed) for lack of a better comparison. If you leap her of the edge of a building and aim her at something grabable she'll get it like Altair would. And what's grabable is whatever glows red, this is your "runner vision". Aim for something red and it's more often than not the way. Though sometimes the game sufferers from "Where am i supposed to be going?" every once in a while. You can press circle to show your objective but this sometimes confuses matters more. It's one very few small bad points about Mirror's Edge.
The other bad point is the combat. R2 controls all combat from firing a gun to kicking and punching, which you can mix with jumps, slids, wall runs etc... And a well timed press of triangle dissarms an enemy. The problem is, early on in the game you're always encouraged to run away from people with guns, but if you have to fight take them on one at a time, which is easy enough. But in the latter stages you get sorta forced fight whether you want to or not. There are just too many bad guys to outrun.
Get used to trying to same jump again, and again, and again, and again... And again. Mirror's Edge can get infuriatingly hard sometimes, but the checkpoints are fairly frequent so although you'll die a lot, and you will, you don't get put too far back in the level.
When you get a good flow going on a level there's nothing as much fun i've played all year than Mirror's Edge. It's more like a game of Tony Hawk at times, trying to nail that perfect line through the stage and if you're into that sort of thing there's a Time Trial mode to play where you upload your fastest times to compete with others.
That's just about it. Mirror's Edge is brilliant, just stick at it when you're doing the same jump for the 8th time.
free running racing platformer excellence January 3, 2009 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Is it me or are gamers a lot more difficult to please nowadays? I am constantly surprised at the negative reviews of Mirror's Edge because it is a bold innovative game that does what it sets out to do very well. OK it is not an open world game like GTA and doesn't include the massive back story such as elder scrolls games or is an accomplished shooter like COD - but then again - so what?
So if you want a open world platformer shooter type game then don't buy Mirror's Edge. If you want a free running adrenaline rush that focuses on keeping up momentum and getting from A to B as quick as possible whilst successfully using a first person perspective - then buy this game! OK the story may not be fantastic and the climax a bit silly, but I think the game comes into its own when you focus on doing the speedruns of the levels or the time trials. Then you realise the game is not quite as linear as you first thought - for instance there are various short cuts that can knock hundreds of metres and several seconds off the levels. In the time trials you can also download friends' ghosts to race against or even the best times from the leaderboards (a good way to discover short cuts!) The main issue is that you cannot race against others in real time, which seems a natural addition to future games!
Again complaints are made about how short the game is. I would say even if you just played the main story you still have an adequate chunk of time for this bargain price - but add in the speedruns and time trials means you have a game with a fair amount of longevity!
All in all, as long as you don't have unrealistc expectations of this game, then it is a brilliant game and one of the best of 2008!
Demo Review/Walkthrough October 31, 2008 10 out of 30 found this review helpful
First off, this review will not focus on the traning level but rather the proper part of the demo, also, I did not pre-order so I cannot review time trial.
And so:
Title screen appears, sleek interface backed with music that seems rather "pure". Demo starts, anime cutscene shows how the city the game is set in became how it is: safe, clean but totalitarian. Following the training, the camera pans around into Faith's (your character) perspective as she runs along some air vents on the side of a skyscraper, slides down off them and lands on a rooftop. You then get control of her. The firs thing that hist me was the vividness of the colours, many of the buildings are shades of white but there are solar panels topping some that are deep blue, lage orange signs, red cranes in the distance and black windows. The sky is pale blue, save for a few clouds and the sun is bathing the city in a bright light. The horizon is filled with towering buildings, some of which are under construction and a large bay is visible in the distance. While typing this, Faith's mission controller was urging me to get a move on, saying things like "Hey Faith, you wanna get paid, you wanna EAT? Now hurry up" - a nice tough I thought to keep the theme of urgency.
The controls are simple: L1 to jump, L2 to duck, R1 to flick Faith around, and R2 to punch. These are the main ones with the face buttons for things such as change your view or drop weapons. So as I move Faith through the early buildings, she builds up momentum making the edges of the screen blurry. It's hard to describe exactly how well the running flows but you can seamlessly go from run to jump to slide to run and then wall jump with just a few button presses, a nice simple mechanic which definitely makes and doesn't brake the game. Runnng further I reach a large jump, launching Faith off a roof is exilhirating and a quick tap of L" just before landing ensures that she rolls to reduce the impact.
A few seconds later, Faith reaches a pipe which must be crossed. It's the regular "tip the Sixaxis controller to keep the balance" manoeuvre. I personally found it easier to switch the motion controls off and just to use the joysticks. Tilting the camera down I can see cas whizzing past and air vents whirring. Following the pipe crossing is a gap which can either be jumped or wall run, the latter being much faster and cooler. One more big jump and a bit of skill is needed here as you must direct Faith onto a drainpipe while in midair. While jumping there is the sound of wind whistling through you ears and Faith's heartbeat, adding to the already impressive array of ambient sounds of vehicles, machinery and air conditioning systems that can be heard throughout the demo.
After climbing the pipe, you barge through a door (with R2) and charge up through a pristine corridor. Faith's mission controller then tells her that the police or "the blues" are heading her way so you must hop up into an air vent to evade them. However, as you drop out of it a squad of blues sees you, yells and then blunders after you as Faith bails up some stairs. The police aim isn't too good here but seeing as the demo version is the prologue of the real game, it is probably scripted so that you don't die too easily. Anyway, you break through another brightly coloured door and our into the open once more for some intense roof jumping, be sure to roll here to save time. Now after about 15 seconds more free running you come face to face with some blues, they can be easily avoided though as you can actually run right past them - their aim is appauling. Should you choose to fight them, you can slide kick, jump kick, punch or disarm. So far though, the combat seems rather limited, but in the full retail game you can string combat into runs. For example: slide, run, wall jump into jump kick which would be extremely impressive.
On this play through I avoided the blues and, running up onto a roof of a stair block, jumped to an external staircase of the next building where I handed over the bag to a fellow Runner. Now the SWAT team equivalent arrives, they muyst be fled from as they all have assault rifles that rip you to shreds. So as they are blasting away at you you run across another roof and a helicopter flies in and hovers at the edge of the building. To go back means death, so charging forwards I make Faith leap and she grabs onto the chopper. It lowers down and you can see your reflection in the windows of the building. As it begins to fly off the game makes Faith drop down what seems about 5 stories onto a soft is rooftop. You look back up at where you came from and can see the SWAT team peering down at you from above. Demo ends.
So, the Mirror's Edge demo... what an experience:
Gameplay: 4.5/5
I would have given it 5 but the combat is just slightly too basic, the enemies can't fight back as they are too slow. You will ALWAYS win one one one fights and always LOSE 4 on one fights because of the guns.
Controls: 5/5
There could not be a better configuration, Faith's leaps and slides are mostly context sensitive to prevent too many diffcult combinations. So far, the hardest one I've come across is the wall jump which requires a run, jump, turn and then jump which is still fairly simple.
Graphics: 5/5
Detailed surroundings and bold colours make for an extremely effective visual style. I would call it "eye candy". Definitely a pleasure to look at. You can also see your own body which makes you feel like you actually ARE Faith, she also wears extremely cool shoes!
Sound: 5/5
No music during the course of the actual demo gameplay but as I mentioned earlier, the ambient sounds of the city, wind whistling your you and Faith's heavy breathing are incredible. Very immersive. Also, the game's main theme "Still Alive" suits the atmosphere perfectly and is one of the best songs on a videogame ever to be written. Make sure you check it out on Youtube.
Overall: 19.5/20
Well, what can I say? This demo is the most fun on my Ps3 I've had in a long time. After writing this I will pre-order the full game and then enjoy time trial mode! If it weren't for the the combat which leaves something tiny missing, Mirror's Edge would be THE game to play this Winter and makes a brilliant break from the likes of Fable 2, LittleBigPlanet, Fallout 3 and the other heavyweights. And what's more, Ps3 has EXCLUSIVE downloadable content for the game, making this the definitve version to own.
I'm off for another run through now, and for everyone reading this make sure you download it and do the same. If you have anymore questions please message me of find my PSN: Mozz-eyes.
