Superficially fun June 29, 2008 Def Jam Icon is one of the shallowest games I've played in years and is highly repetitive and boring.
You get to create what your character looks like but you have to be male and you must be some shade of black/mixed. This character then goes through the trials and tribulations of becoming a big-shot music producer and you fight your way through all the confrontations in between.
Sounds like it might make a good game but it's VERY linear and pretty much every decision you make in the management half of the game has little or no effect on anything. How good would it be to download your own tunes onto the PS3 and mix them into new tracks for the game? Tough, you can't.
There are about 10 different environments to fight in but they all get rather tiresome after the millionth battle and there are never any really cool moments when you interact with the crumbling area. Def Jam Icon is all flash and no substance I'm afraid, I actually liked Def Jam Fight for NY a lot better.

Stylish but no substance June 10, 2008 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
Def Jam ICON is fun in short bursts. But ultimately, it's a shallow, sluggish fighting game which can frustrate immensely. The fairly deep fighting system of earlier Def Jam games has been replaced by more OTT grappling. This makes ICON more fun to pick up and play, but is much easier to master.
More effort has been made with the single player mode than previously. The Build a Label mode gives the option to release records and sign artists like Ludacris and T.I. As the game progresses, the needs of your chosen artists have to be catered for, although this involves nothing more than saying Yes or No to something. Shops and jewellery stores offer limited levels of customisation and the fighting environments are imaginative and well designed. The scratch ability also links the music and the action imaginatively.
Yet like most EA games, ICON is highly polished, but lacks any real depth.
What have they done!? December 22, 2007 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
This game was a big disappointment especially after Def Jam: Fight for NY. Def Jam: Fight for NY was a amazing game but this was such a let down, don't get me wrong the graphics are spectacular but the gameplay is AWFUL! i can't stand with what they have done to the game. You now fight to music this invovles no tatics to what to do basically just press the same old buttons till the music K.O your opponent. The gameplay is fairly enjoyable at first but after a while it is repetitive and boring. The storyline is rubbish unlike Fight for NY and basically the whole game has been ruined!
Avoid this game!
Def Jam, Slightly dissapointed. May 25, 2007 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
Unlike Def Jam: Fight for NY there are no weapons, also the game is trying to be too realistic were as in Fight for New York It was a very fun game which I could play on end. Overall ICON has amazing graphics and was merged Hip-Hop and fighting well. But its 'fighting' and not wrestling.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! April 11, 2007 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
Def Jam is a very interesting game on the ps3. Icon integrates hip hop culture and gaming like never before. The game takes you deep into the life of a high-rolling hip hop mogul to build a record label, discover new superstars, and become a hip hop ICON. With the hottest music infused into the world around you, the game's environments explode to life with every bone-jarring beat. Time your attacks to the driving bass and use falling debris and exposed environmental hazards to pound your rivals. Prove you're the king of rhymes with realistic rap battles Battle to your own music or against the music of a friend Fight with or against hip-hop's biggest stars - Ludacris, T.I., Paul Wall, The Game, Big Boi, and more.
A MUST BUY 10/10
