Buzz Quiz TV. More to know ? December 6, 2008 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
At time of writing, for 3 more than the regular blisterpack version you get a much better presentation box, but thats not all. Its still a bit big to store your controllers in so i'd have liked to have seen the nice felt bag included. You get the National Geographic Safari Quiz (4.99 on PSN) and the Video Games Quiz (3.49 on PSN). Thats 1000 extra questions and a money saving. Wether the other bonuses are extra or not i don't know but it lists 4 crazy new contestants, 10 bonus buzzer noises, quickstart mode and of course the recently added trophies. The actual dvd game case shows the writing "Special Edition" so i'm going to assume it is an updated version of the game. Its really the bigger box and extra questions for the 3. I think its worth it... Now i must go play :)
An under-rated party treat December 29, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I made a special point of requesting this on my Christmas list, not so much for myself, but for the numerous occasions that we have friends over or see other friends on-line who also have this title.
Buzz! is a quiz-show themed party game (that can be played solo if you wish) using specially-designed Buzz! controllers. The controllers take 2xAA batteries (included) and have 4 simple coloured buttons plus the main red select button at the top. On the side is a slider switch that powers the device on or off - although they will auto-off after 20 minutes of inactivity to save power. Each game takes place in a virtual studio with you taking on a character on-screen to represent you. The game is divided into rounds using different game-show-esque formats such as "fastest finger", or "stop-the-clock", or "pass the bomb", which all help to keep it varied - although a single-player game keeps to a single format as the others wouldn't make sense when playing solo.
The online aspect of this game is called "sofa-vs-sofa" and limits each household to one character representation and one buzzer - which is an area that could perhaps be improved on in future versions, but obviously 4 households could each play with 1 character each.
The player with the lowest points after each round gets to choose the topic for the next round, which helps to keep things relatively balanced, and topics include Music (subsected into 80s, 90s, Recent, Oldies), Science & Technology, General Knowledge, Mind & Body etc. you can also dowload extra Game Packs from the Playstation Store, although this "Special Edition" comes with 2 extra packs included for free.
The games don't take too long to complete - each round takes on average 4 or 5 minutes to complete and there are only about 5 or 6 rounds. It can get very competitive, and some game types mean that even if someone has a commanding lead, the tables could turn quite easily.
I would definitely recommend this Special Edition over the regular pack, as not only is the price differential small, you also get a few extra costumes for the characters, some extra buzzer noises, 2 quiz packs, and perhaps most importantly, a rather nice box to keep it all in, as opposed to the nasty plastic blister pack that the standard pack comes in.
As areas for possible improvement, I would suggest:
* Being able to have more than one user per household on sofa-vs-sofa. * Being able to specify certain game round types as preferences. * Being able to do more with the Playstation Eye/microphone when doing sofa-vs-sofa. Currently it just takes a snapshot at certain moments.
