Powered by the third generation of the EA Sports football engine, FIFA 09 features more than 250 core gameplay additions and enhancements that deliver the most responsive, intelligent and realistic action ever for the series. Enjoy turning defenders with more controlled dribbling and ball control, snapping off precision shots with improved first-time shooting mechanics and firing beautifully timed passes with greater accuracy, placing the ball exactly where you want it. With new player momentum physics the speed and weight of the player determines everything from the distance of a slide tackle and the power of a header to the severity of player collisions and the height of a player's jump. Plus, players now behave according to their physical attributes with larger, stronger players dominating collisions, battles for control of the ball, and position in challenges for two player headers.

Miles ahead of Pro Evo and Fifa 08 October 4, 2008 12 out of 18 found this review helpful
I've always bought fifa every year since PSone, and I've never really enjoyed Pro Evo. But last years Fifa 08 attempt I thought was poor. Although it looked stunning on the eye, the gameplay was slow and slugish. Passing was fustrating and scoring anywhere from 6 yards out was almost impossible. Coming up to the release date for fifa 09 and pro evo, my mind was swaying for the first time towards Konami's attempt. As I read the great things about the new fifa and played the demo I decided to go once again for Fifa and what a great decision that was. Fifa 09 is without doubt the greatest football game ever made. It's visually better than 08 and the gameplay is exceptional. Every pass, movement, tackle and shot has to be thought about. You can't just press pass, pass, pass, shoot and it's 1-0. You have to work your players about the pitch. Look for passes in space, make your players move. It makes you think about every aspect of your game. Tacklings tough too, as every player is different and weight and size of the player is taken into account. Rooney against Wright-Phillips in a 50/50 tackle and Rooney will win 95% of time but put Rooney against Gallas or Gerrard and it it could either way. Apart from the goal celebrations which you can do yourself, which at 1st are cool but after scoring 50 goals it gets a bit annoying, there isn't anything i've come across which is poor in any way. Well done EA. 10 out of 10!
A Real Review for a Real Game October 3, 2008 9 out of 15 found this review helpful
Fifa 09 is a great game and yes you can create yourself and play against the best in the world, it also carries over from Euro 08 where you can select a surname so that the commentators announces you during the game, it also has a similar engine to the Euro 08 and yes Fifa 09 has improved the looks of C. Ronaldo, in 08 he did not look to great. This is a review for Fifa 09 and not ProEvo why people come here to dispel Fifa is beyond belief all I will say on the matter is that proevo fans should rent this and allow time to get to know fifa and likewise with fifa fans. There are over 250 additions and enhancements to the core gameplay, Fifa 09 delivers a real authentic football simulation game that enables you to customize the game to suit your style and ability, you can full change team tactics and create your own that suits your team requirements, no need for C. Ronaldo to come back and defend but G. Neville to push forward into attack. Also, the player celebrations have returned from Euro 08, you chose how to celebrate, I love putting my finger over my mouth to hush the crown, oh how I miss Henry in the premiership and I am not an Arsenal fan.
The players attributes are now more pronounced its worth familiarising yourself with your team and capitalising on the stronger members. Fifa again brings the unique trick system and an enhanced vocabulary of moves that are executed with a series of inputs on the right stick and gives more skilful players another route of attack. It all adds up to one of the most faithful facsimiles of the beautiful game yet seen.
This game does deliver and I have been playing most of the day, the only problem I am going to have is putting it down.

Fifa 09 demo September 16, 2008 15 out of 26 found this review helpful
Having played this demo i can happily say that EA have once again not failed to impress.
Almost every aspect of the game, atleast every noticeable aspect of the game has been improved. Such, when you are trough on goal you are more likely to score, unlike before when the keeper usualy saved it. The overhead through balls have improbed, they have been made so much better mainly because the players off the ball runs have improved dramaticaly. Meaning you get a much more realistic and skillful way to play.
There are many more skills to do, so you can try to take on oppenents in many ways, like flicking theb all over their head.
The general technique of the players has improved, so they shoot and pass the ball with a good technique.
You can score in more varietys of ways, to prove my point the first ever goal i scored on this game was a chip over the keepers head from outside the box.
Overall, this game is brilliant, and I can't wait for it to come out!
Honest review from a dedicated PES fan October 6, 2008 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
I have to be honest...I've always loved PES and never really got into Fifa, there were always too many quirks like sluggish controls, etc for me and I only played Fifa 08 a few times before trading it in.
However, after being really let down by PES 2008 last year with it's awful slowdown, crowds that looked like something from the C64 and a lack of options to prevent stuff like kits clashing, I decided to trade in a few titles and pick this up on Saturday, knowing that I could always get a bit of cash back and trade it in for PES later on this month.
After playing over 10 games on management mode, it's simply a great football game. Highly enjoyable, packed with features and plays a great enjoyable game of football where you have to work at breaking defences down and it will take a long time to master all of the tricks, etc available.
I will probably buy PES as well (especially as the slowdown appears to have been cured) but this is highly recommended. If you have always been a PES only fan...please give this a chance, it's actually really good!
PES is dead, long live the FIFA!!! October 26, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Firstly, I havent bought a FIFA on the Playstation since FIFA 98 Road to the World Cup, as I found it a bit of a 2 trick pony in that you could easily pull off a trick and stroll past a defender with a speed burst, and it was way too easy to score as there were spots where you shot from and the keepers would flap helplessly in the wind like an England goalkeeper. I then tried PES and my love affair with the beautiful game blossomed............. until PES 2008.
My PES lover then began to take me for granted and my eye started to roam for a new plaything that would get my heart racing again. Then I started hearing stories that my old flame FIFA, had been given a complete makeover on the PS3 and that its latest 2009 version is turning heads and demanding to be looked at. After reading the game reviews online which give it on average 9/10, I decided to buy it and give it a try, after all, whats the harm in trying? If it was a terrible game, I could always trade it in.
On the first play, I initially thought WOW, this game definitely has something what with its immaculate presentation, superb commentary and fantastic online features (10 vs 10, unheard of), but its in the gameplay that FIFA 2009 really brings it home. Granted you must give it at least 7 or 8 games to adapt to the feel of the play, but you will be hooked. It is now quite challenging to score goals and you can no longer beat a defender just by holding the dash button, FIFA 2009 is now the thinking mans game. You must start with controlled build ups from the back, zip the ball about dragging the opposition out of position (pass and move, its the Liverpool groove)and when you get that bit of space inside the box and strike a pearler of a shot and watchit bending for the top corner of the onion bag, the keeper will pull off a truely magnificent world class save ala Pat Jennings in his hay day. A scrambled ugly goal earning you a tight and hard fought 1-0 win will have you punching the air in delight, just as much as a goal of the season contender. This definitely is football.
The only gripe I would have is that there is no World Cup or Euro Championship type competition for international teams, but you can create your own tournament and select the participants which can be a tad tedious. Also, why did they not include Wales? If you are Welsh you wont be able to take the the field as your country, but my beloved Northern Ireland are there along with a digital David Healy so who cares really (sorry Wales).
To conclude, this definitely is the closest thing to football and reminds me of the way PES used to be, in fact FIFA has borrowed the best bits of PES, which has itself turned into the goal fest boredom that was early FIFA.
I would award this game 5 out of 5 which for a PES man, I never thought I could ever bring myself to do. I still hold a little affection for PES as you cant be with it for so many years and not remember the good times, but its 2009 offering has dropped into second place this time. Hopefully PES will get over itself and come out of its comfort zone in 2010 so that we have 2 great football games to chose from instead of 1 this year......... after all, variety is the spice of life.
