5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good   December 19, 2007

Ive only had my PSP (Slim) a few days and it doesn't fail to impress me.
I really wanted a portable film player, a decent games console and a sat nav. So why not have all of these in one? Heck, it even acts as an MP3 player.
Yet again, Sony has a slow-burning piece of hardware on its hands, its true potential yet to be realised.
As much as I appreciate what Nintendo has done in giving gaming to a larger market, there was really no question as to which one I wanted.
As far as Im concerned, the DS does have a good games catalogue, but aimed at the younger more casual gamer. The PSP, against misconceptions, has a very good back catalogue of titles.
The clarity of the screen is, honestly, absolutely stunning. Just put Lumines or Loco Roco in and you can't be failed to be impressed by the looks and the fluidity at how everything runs.
Admittedly, the UMD film thing is a bit of a letdown but thats only because, rightly so, you are not going to pay 15 quid to have another copy of a film which you already own on DVD (hence the TV output - which Im yet to try). Still, this means we can now buy three films for a tenner which is cheaper than three rentals. And thats not to mention the fact you can now download media manager to store your own DVDs to memory stick.
Im looking forward to the sat nav, the newly announced PS1 playback via remote play on PS3 (When I get round to buying one) and an increasingly impressive catalogue on the PSP store.
The ultimate accolade for me? My mum, shes 60, and an avid Playstion fan. The only thing shes ever played, or wanted to play, on a Nintendo is Windwaker.
The PSP has exceeded all my expectations and one of the few ways I can fault it is that I wish there was a few more high profile titles - the PSP is selling bucketloads but the games are not in the charts. So I can only assume that it is being used as a portable media device first and then a gaming console.
The second is that the back of this model doesnt feel as stirdy as I thought it would.
Thirdly, I was a bit annoyed with the location of the headphones jack but a few days later Ive realised it could be anywhere else.
Treat yourself, Ive already been on the internet on it and am now looking forward, another one, to watching live or recorded TV at Wi-fi hotspots as soon as I get my PS3.

5 out of 5 stars Lets balance things here..   October 7, 2007

The PSP always was a nice design - upgrading the previous one by evolving so many features is better than ditching it and adding totally new ones.. (how would the developers support that?) This way people who bought the original shouldn't feel cheated as there aren't hugely compelling reasons to upgrade..

But - for new customers the slim PSP is *much* better than the original. It has faster load times(which was always one of the PSP's biggest flaws), weighs less, is thinner, and the TV out is actually a pretty killer feature to the people who might want it..

Games like MGS:PO, Silent Hill Origins and FFVII: Crisis Core will benefit from the big-screen treatment. I often play single player games somewhat socially, so having others able to see the game easier by having it on the home cinema setup is a huge bonus.

Loads of devs seem to be using PSP projects as a stopgap between the PS2 and PS3 - They get to put a PS2 amount of resources in, but still support modern hardware this way - a lot of good stuff is coming to the system over the next few months. Oh, and they're pretty cheap now!

5 out of 5 stars Bit of an improvement...   October 2, 2007

Thought i would write a review as the previous guy clearly hasnt actually got a psp slim - how can u review something u haven't got? duhhhhh

Ok so after getting a second hand fat psp of ebay a week before the slim came out, with a slightly unresponsive d-pad (well worn) and with hairline scratches on the screen, i got wind of the 3.60 m33 firmware of the psp lite and so sought to get a refund for my worn fat psp. Here are my thoughts,

more comftable to hold - especially for long periods.

Buttons less sticky and much more like a ps1/2 controller - the dpad for example is higher.

Screen refresh rate / quality is a bit better - the horendous bluring you get with dark (black) movement on light coloured (white) has improved - only slight bluring, def better and less annoying. There is a noticable delay when (watching video) a cut occurs - theres still a sort of residue left of the previous frame of video. So refresh is still slow, (video is no where near that of a ipod video) but blurring of dark against white has improved by around 20-40%. The screen also appears to be more coourful and bright than before.

Umd hatch is simpler open, chuk disc in slam shut, easy.

negatives -

noisy, clicky buttons l & r shoulder buttons are the worst.

Cheap feel - but not too cheap - for example you can see the screen light on the right d-pad and square button, prob more of a sign of poor design and execution.

same battery life as before BUT you can use the psp fat battery in the slim which DOUBLES!!!! your battery life BUT it makes the back of the slim slightly uncomftable and generally weird to hold (you cant have the back cover on there.

Overall theres not a massive diffence with the psp slim - (its not 'the new psp' as the previous review pointed out) its just the same psp with a few tweeks (a sportier model). Its not worth getting if you already own a psp. Unless you find the blurring annoying on video and in games. Its also strange how sony have just released it with no case, cleaning cloth etc.. Ovearll this gets 5stars as im judging this on the product alone and the entertainment value you can get with this.

I reccomedn getting a 4gb sony card of amazon as well (for 31)

5 out of 5 stars Great media device, pretty good games console.   December 14, 2007

Well to start things off I previously owned the original 'fat' PSP, however I quickly got rid of it for three reasons: bulk, annoyingly over powered spring in UMD slot and the unresponsive buttons. However having recently switched to the PSP slim I am happy to say that all of these niggles have been addressed.

The UMD slot on the slim is now completely manual (which some people may find cheap but frankly it beats firing your games into the floor by accident) and the buttons are now raised which help tighten controls. What really makes the difference though is the weight and thickness decreases, I bought a PSP for 2 reasons: 1) to play games and 2) to listen to ATRAC files and watch movies on the go. As such the bulk of the previous PSP became a major burden (for a start it was too thick to fit in most of my jeans (and too heavy to put in a jacket pocket).

As for features, the audio playback is beautiful and ATRAC compatibility is a tasy little bonus (ATRAC is MUCH more efficient at compressing music than standard MP3 meaning you can squeeze out every last inch of memory on your card if you so wish). Video playback is good for a device of this price and the screen is beautiful (though it will show up any artifacts in you video clearly - a double edged sword).

My only niggle is on the games front, the PSP still lacks a stellar line up of games. While there are definitely a couple of gems in it's back catalogue (MGS portable ops, Gitaroo Man and the GTA games to name a few) a large percentage of the games are simple PS2 ports and not always well executed ports either. However this having been said there are still enough games to warrant a gaming purchase.

Summary:

Pros:
* Much lighter and thinner too.
* Rasied buttons helps for tighter controls.
* No more UMD firing!
* Beautiful screen.
* Excellent audio capabilities.
* Wireless internet.
* Good video playback capabilities.
* Can now connect to a TV (though why you would want to do this I do not under stand it is still a nice feature).
* There are a number of brilliant games out for it.
* *Drools* shiny piano black....

Cons:
* Screen is a bit of a double edged sword as it WILL show up artifacts in badly compressed movies.
* While there are a number of excellent games out for the console there are also WAY too many shoddy PS2 ports and compilation discs.
* It might look nice having just got it out of the packaging but be prepared for it to look like a smudgy mess once you start playing.
* Battery life isn't amazing but spare high capacity batteries can be bought easily.

I hope that helps!

5 out of 5 stars A great handheld console   October 5, 2007

There is no getting away from the fact that a lot of games for the PSP are ports from the PS2 many of which are great games such as the Prince of Persia series, and the controls aren't good for some of the early FPS shooters.
BUT...
what do you expect from a new console? games have now developed much better control systems solving the earlier problems AND there are also a lot of original PSP only games, including 2 new Wipeout games that were so popular on the PS1 and PS2, not to mention PSP exclusive Medal of honor heroes supporting 32 player multiplayer matches! that you won't get on a DS. other exclusive games include Killzone liberations based on the popular Killzone series, Command and Conquer like Field Commander that replicates 3d warfare on an impressive scale and many others. Most of which are available for 15 or under on many websites! why buy a PSP? they're basically a PS2 in your hand with all the popular games available on PS2 but with extra exclusive PSP games with far superior graphics to the DS, and you can't play your PS2 on a train can you?

I also own a DS and find myself constantly disappointed by the lack of leap in game quality between the SP and DS as most games are gimmicky due to the "innovation" of its stylus that over complicates menus/games that are easier to play via the standard cross and button setup which is evident in games such as the new pokemon diamond/pearl where half the menus are taken from previous versions of the game and don't support the stylus which results in having to constantly switch between the stylus and the cross, making it a lot simpler to just stick with the cross.

The PSP is great, and if you want one why not buy the slimmer one for the same price. You won't be dissapointed.
