Here is a brief summary review for you guys.

GOOD POINTS:-
=============
+ Much better graphics & animations than ever before
+ UEFA Champions League fully licensed (although not all the teams in it are)
+ More licensed teams than ever before
+ Improved physics & more realism
+ Better weather engine, meaning it plays more on your tactics than ever before
+ Liverpool & Man Utd fully licensed from the English Prem
+ Controls are better & sharper
+ AI more realistic

BAD POINTS:-
=============
- Still not enough teams (club or international)
- Music is still naff
- Commentary is also still naff

OVERALL: If you ignore the 3 minor points that this game is still missing, this is easily the best football and best PES game ever, bar none. An absolute must purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Hard but great   December 9, 2008

I can understand why this game has recieved some negative reviews but not the quantity of them. I got this game on the day of release but refrained from writing a review because i was so frustrated with it. There was even a controller thrown at one point! As i have been playing pro evo since the days of ISS on the original playstation i was determined to stick with it and see if it grew on me which it certainly did. Ill admit that this is far towards the simulation side of football games as you would ever want to go and they possibly took it a bit far(some of the players cant dribble past jogging speed) but it encourages people to play a passing game, use the one-two function and create better team moves. Gone are the days when Michael Owen could run in a straight line through your entire team in about 2 seconds. Much like in real life dribbling is about close control and direction shifts, only applying sprint when there is some space to run into and the ball is away from the opposition player. As such first touch is even more important than in previous versions and it can be far more effective to stand still if in space so as to draw defenders out before commiting them with a pass. People used to sprinting everywhere with little patience will find the computer to be irritatingly good at tackling and defending. If you press left bumper after a pass the passer will pass the ball then make a forward run, combinations of these give-and-go passes can be used to devastating effect in this game. Also people familiar with all previous versions of pro evo will know that some versions the shot bar is more like a height bar with the shot being determined by your players stride pattern in relation to the shot and his attribute "shot power". That is the system used in this version so people trying to half power it and blast it into the net will not score may goals unless their players have good enough technique to control that shot. As for the tackling system it is very similar to the previous version with holding of tackle to muscle them, but now tapping it seems to more freely attempt a stab tackle than it did with its predecessor. This may be a bit more than most people want to think about with a football game with it being very difficult to score with basic passes and long dribbles but as with all other versions every single player action can be taken to an extremely high level and if you understand the real life game of football and are prepared to "bring your A game" for want of a better expression to every match then the football that can be played on this version can occasionally be like watching a frantic real life top 4 battle. This is even more the case in master league where the new champions league section brings tough game after tough game. One of my friends was loving playing two player versus the computer because as he rightly said the computer can now finally give your a real game. With better defence, better passing and some evil corner kicks the computer can now score against you with means other than 35 yard free kicks(which went in 90 percent of the time on top level on the last game). Many people will find this game too slow or get frustrated at the lack of dribbling but i find that all these changes have made this game more realistic and at the end of the day pro evo has always been a simulation game with fifa being the arcade alternative. However hard this game is to play it is worth it when you see the football that can be played on it.

5 out of 5 stars pes is back to its best and better then ever   September 23, 2008

As a japanese backwards compatible ps3 owner i have had the luxury of playing j league winning eleven club championship 2008 which is a ps2 club version of PES 2009.Judging by this game this years pes 2009 is going to be something special,forget your champions league mode although it is a nice touch and i cant wait,gameplay is what it is all about and PES 2009 is going to leave us all breathless.Genuine
aftertouch,backheels,players that seek out and look for space off the ball,a manual long pass mode off the left thumbstick or d-pad which gives you full control of elevation and placement if the game is set to type 5,headers that work,instant return passes,bone crunching tackles,through balls that you can curve with the left thumbstick or d-pad and teamates run onto,a auto,semi,auto-manual cursor allowing instant overides and is intelligent and at its best in semi auto mode.These are all the new refinements that will feature in pes 2009 as well as stunning ball friction effects and ramped up ai and teamvision behold pes fans are time has come!!!!!!!!!!!!!I have had the ps2 version for a week and a half and have not enjoyed my football this much since ISS on the n64.The game is more fluid and seamless everything works and everything is just refined to perfection,passing triangles are essential for victory and opening stubborn defences and you now have more control of the players feet making striking less contrived and more skillfull.Gone is thhe pass and go replaced by your teamates instinctively making the wright movement or runs.You now have total control of direction on goal kicks as well as the long ball which gives you the option of direct long ball football plus backspin can be put on the ball by pulling the left thumstick or d-pad back.Players in the box on crosses move towards the ball and backheels are fluid and you can create lay offs in wide areas for instant crosses into the box with aftertouch produced by the left thumbstick or d-pad.Through balls are sublime and work and again like the long pass changes in the balls direction can be applied using the left thumbstck or d-pad.Feints and taking the ball from the outside to the inside of your boot or vice versa is now performed as is the marseille roulette on the left thumstick or d-pad and tevez uses only one foot unlike zidane who always used two and works wonderfully and is a superb touch.What is also worth a mention is the way the ai for the match works making the game slow and speed up making it feel quite real and frenetic depending on how you and the opposition are playing and at times happily feels faster then pes 2008,theres nothing like chasing a game and your teamates are raising there arms for a pass.I know the version i am playing is on the ps2 but this game was only released 4 weeks ago features the become a legend mode and looking at the videos and reading previews of pes 2009 both these game are indentical the only difference being the graphics which are stunning on the ps3 and 360 and the extra month testing konami has done with the next generation versions plus the ps2 japanese version has no champions league or international teams as it is a club prelude version.The new weather effects especially rain which really effects the improved ball physics in this new pes are outstandig with the ground becoming soggy and heavy and rain stopping and getting worse in a match.Konami have really spent most of the developement time in refineing the gameplay and improving the ball physics rather then focusing on lots of new options and some people may at first find the striking seems a little innacurate.Everything in this new pes centres around the trap button R2 which you use a lot for pin point passing and shooting but accurate shooting requires skill gentle hands and correct placement of the ball and the players feet and is sublime once mastered and the way players like messi dash now is superb certainly feeling very fast and you will score some fine goals.I must also mention heading which is now perfect and accurate with players changing position and movement in the box rather then like pes 2008 where they dont move plus it is possible to trap the ball on your chest with R2 and strike a instant volley.You will also find yourself playing bolton style or wimbledon direct football as now you have freedom of control on the long pass and when you spray the ball around you can play head tennis with your teamates making the whole experience a accurate simulation of the beatifall game.........

Now after playing the next gen demo i can see this is the same game as the above on the ps2 its brilliant dont listen to the naysayers 5 minutes is just not enough for the code to really get going.You have to click with it but when you do your realise what a magic game this is.The game has to played for 20-30 minutes for the refinements to be appreciated and savoured plus most pes players are still using the d-pad wich is limiting and rarely do anything but pass on the ground and run at defenders where with this new version you have a manual long ball and build up play and moving the ball side to side backwards and forwards is rewarded.Konami have given the user a extra dimension never before utilised in a pes game only there older perfct striker franchise.I know for a fact that it takes a week or more to really hit the g-spot of this game and absorb most of the newer refinements.Im not some over excited fanboy i have done nothing but slate the pes games for the last nine years bemoaning the lack of a manual long ball on the left thumbstick and the fact that teamates off the ball dont make runs into space or move towards manual crosses plus the cheating ai and contrived gameplay and a through ball that never worked properly plus sticky players that felt that they where joined by invisible elastic.This has all been addressed with pes 2009 and we now have a game that rivals or betters perfect striker or iss but with the eye candy and physics calculations of a modern console no one tests these games harder then me because from 1999-2001 i had the definitive football game on the n64 and then the ps2 that offered me total control and all the optons that pes 2009 does.PLUS WE FINALLY HAVE NO SLOWDOWN,MODERN NEXT GEN AI AND A SOLID 60 FRAMES A SECOND.

5 out of 5 stars FIFA MAFIA TAKE NOTE!   October 18, 2008

There's a school of thought here that the might EA's FIFA 2009 has obliterated PES out of the water, resulting in, supposedly, PES 2009 being made redundant in the wake of the (admittedly excellent) FIFA 09. Wll I've got news for you, people - DESPITE what the critics will have you believe, PES 2009 is excellent in it's own right.

What was the best footie control system has been improved. The reason it hasn't been so radical an improvement is down to the "if it aint broke" syndrome. Yes, FIFA 2009 has made loads of improvements, but at the end of the day, let's not forget that it needed to improve. For years, FIFA has been frankly boring. Yet year after year they kept on churning them out. Big deal - so this year, the FIFA version is excellent. Get over it. Anyone remember the travesty that was FIFA 07 on the 360?

If you like all the other PES games on the PS2 and PS1 (and I count myself as an afficionado, having spent thousands of hours on PES over the years!) then you will love this. It has that "PES" factor that FIFA will never have, despite all the bells and whistles.

EA has a lot of clout, and I'm sure has made it worthwhile for certain so-called expert critics to spout on about it being the best sports game of all time etc etc. And the same experts claim that PES is now redundant. Well they are wrong!

The graphics were pretty good last year in my opinion - this year they look excellent. A few tweaks to the control system - nothing radical - has made the general pace more realistic - less arcade-y. So they don't have all the teams - so what? They never have, and it never bothered critics spouting on about the genius of previous versions of PES in the past.

This is the best of the lot. Trust me.

If you can afford it, buy both PES and FIFA. If you like other PES version and can only afford one, buy PES 2009 - you won't be disappointed!

well i own both FIFA 09 and Pro evo 09 now
and after being a "fifa boy" for a few years when i was in school, when i got to college, i was shown the wonders of Pro, and ever since i was a "pro evo boy", but this year i thought id try both, just to see which is the better.

well after playing fifa, i felt like i was having an affair, the gameplay is just horrible, playing pro feels like im at home, its much much better.
i didnt mind last years pro evo, but this years has actually stepped up. and now with teh champions league, on it, it can only be a matter of time, before they get the licenses for more teams etc.

overall, if u want an elite football game, go for pro evo
