The latest feature-length DVD spin-off from Matt Groening's terrific Futurama, The Beast With The Billion Backs picks up directly after the recent Bender's Big Score, and the momentum and fun from that production comes along with it. The story of The Beast With The Billion Backs follows, as you may have guessed from the title, the arrival of a strange creature on Earth. Said creature then takes control of Fry, who becomes the Pope of a brand new religion that soon begins to exert its grip on the planet. And without giving too much away, the panic and paranoia becomes just one part of an ambitious animated adventure, that makes a fair few points among its many, many laughs. The good news for fans of Futurama is that The Beast With The Billion Backs really delivers, with more guffaws and a better all-round script than the mightily enjoyable Bender's Big Score. It's not without the odd problem, and still doesn't quite manage to match the highs of the TV show at its finest, but it's a very welcome fresh addition to the Futurama universe. Two further direct-to-DVD movies are in the works at the time of this review being written, and with them comes continued hope for a full-on revival of one of the funniest animated programmes of the past ten years. It may not make suitable family viewing, but Futurama is brilliant television, and The Beast With A Billion Backs offers plenty of evidence as to why. Strongly recommended. --Jon Foster

I was laughing constantly throughout watching this. The funny bits come at regular intervals, and I don't understand those reviews that have said there were too few of them, perhaps they just don't like/get the humour? I would like to remind naysayers in particular of the science conference scene which floored me with the stream of fantastic lines, and of course, most other scenes are no different. These lines are all in the futurama vein that we know and love of surrealism, linguistic oddities (usually from Fry) and general stupidity.
The differences between this and the last film are as follows: there was no seriousness or tearjerking to it, allowing for greater laughability but not being detrimental to the film. The plot wasn't as intricate as the last and wouldn't 'confuse' you if you got confused by BBS and consists only of the main story and a couple of linked sub-stories. Unfortunately, there is a lack of nerdish science, maths and Star Wars references that were so abundant in BBS, but this is the film's only weak point.
A host of new characters, objects, events (for example, deathball) and rules to the Futurama universe develop our knowledge and make this a truly worthy edition to the Futurama saga. An abundance of extras as well proves this dvd to be of very reasonable value and Futurama votary or not, there is no reason you shouldn't add this to your collection. NO REASON.

My problem with "Bender's Big Score" was there were the constant references to previous episodes and while it was all enjoyable you could almost hear the writers changing gear to the movie length format. It was fun but it wasn't classic Futurama.
However I am happy to report that "The Beast with a Billion Backs" is a real return to form. My main indicator is the fact with the first one I smiled all the way through, this time I laughed out loud on regular occasions.
Bender, the morally corrupt robot, tends to be everyone's favourite but I would say there has sometimes been too much reliance on him to carry the comedy so I am happy to say that while there's plenty of fun with Bender, all the other main characters get plenty of funny scenes too allowing for a variety of one-liners and sight gags.
The jokes come thick and fast (almost anything to do with Kiff in this one is hilarious), the writing is tighter and the basic plot is just scary enough to make you care about a movie length version of a TV series. For fans and people new to the series there's something here for everyone.

The Beast With a Billion Backs is an improvement on the already high standards of Bender's Big Score. Its plot and pacing are better suited to the feature-length format, and its romantic theme draws on the most touching elements of the television series. The dynamic between Fry and Leela is what makes Futurama more than a sci-fi spoof and remains an insistent argument for the continuation of the phenomenon.
I would urge all Futurama fans to buy the first two straight to dvd films, as well as the two that are to come. Even if you have reservations about how the show works in this format, Fox will view strong DVD sales will be the single most convincing argument in favour of bringing Futurama back as a full blown TV series. This happened when Family Guy was cancelled (in my opinion a far inferior series which relies heavily on derivative humour and cut-away gags that The Simpsons abandoned after its first few seasons.)
Encourage your friends to buy these DVDs, and indeed the boxsets of the first four series. We all know that Futurama is too special a series for us to let it fade Into the Wild Green Yonder.

Although Matt Groening will forever be remembered for his creation of the Simpsons and the total hysteria that still surrounds what many will agree has become a very bad attempt at comedy. Futurama, however, is something truly unique and has the potential to become Matt Groenings best creation especially when it comes to longevity as the mere setting of the show gives it the potential to be truly unique on a constant basis as the creators can truly go wild with the stories. Going wild is something they really have done with this movie as it's something that you feel is truly bizarre even for a comedy like Futurama. The story starts off with how the last movie finished with a big tear in the universe and nobody having a single idea about what it was.
At the start we're introduced to the gang in all their glory but we learn that Kif and Amy are having a FonFon Rubok (Wedding) and Fry has a new Girlfriend called Colleen, but there's one problem with Colleen and that's she has 5 other boyfriends. Bender has his role in this movie as after the first attempt to pass through the universal tear and injuring himself in the process, he gets the chance to meet Calculon in hospital and decides he wants to be Calculons official stalker, which leads him into the dark underworld of the League of Robots. Through the movie after Fry breaks up with Colleen he votes himself to enter the rift to explore just exactly what it is that's in the alternate universe, we come to find that it's a huge squid monster names Yivo and it enters on a quest to invade our universe.
This is a really good movie and much, much better than the first. Although the set of Futurama movies were only made with the intention of being split into episodes for a new season to eventually begin on Comedy Central in the USA, the movies don't seem to look like 3 or 4 episodes put into one long movie, they simply appear as intended and that's a damn good movie. It's filled with some of the best one liners I've heard on an animated show of this kind and one of the best lines were by the character Yivo "It burns like my gonorrhoea." This line had me in absolute stitches at the sheer unexpected value of it, this is what makes Futurama so special as it has some of the most creative writing you can imagine. It's not shocking for shocks sake like Family Guy, and it's not ridiculous try hard humour like the current Simpsons seasons it's simply witty comedy that has you roaring with laughter at the genuine wit of the writing.
This and Benders Big Score should be added to your DVD collections along with the upcoming Futurama movies which I can imagine to be just as special.
WATCH IT AGAIN August 24, 2008
I made the same mistake with this one as I did the last. I watched it the whole way through and came away thinking it was dreadful. Now, after watching it in 20 mins clips (as 4 episodes rather than a movie) I must confess....it is as good as the TV shows.
With Bender taking over Earth, Fry becoming pope of a new religion....this cannot be missed for a futurama fan...
gotta wait till Nov now for the next 1
