ps3! what happened to ps2 August 18, 2008 i would like this game but i only have a ps2 and this game if only available in ps3 or xbox360 i think they should do it for more consoles like ps2 to make it available to people with not so good models of gaming devices
A big disappointment August 14, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Having brought this game paying 40 for it in the shops I was expecting a good quality and developed game. Unfortunatley I was to be disappointed by a general all round low standard.
First, to accentuate the positives - and they are there - the graphics are impressive and are a clear step forward over Athens 2004 - PS3's technology working nicely.
Now onto the negatives.
There are 205 countries individually competing in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. On the game you can choose from...32. This is a very, very serious flaw as you could choose from more in Athens.
There are events missing - such as some of the longer distance races, longer distance swimming events, and more in the way of weightlifting. There is no badminton and no tennis.
The national anthems are a nice touch - and would be even better if they were played in their entirety instead of skimping on large chunks of the longer anthems. If this was supposed to be an accurate and realistic recreation I'm afraid for me it has fallen flat on it's face. The whole thing smacks of lacking attention to detail.
And that's before we even get to the gameplay. I am aware that these sorts of games are renowned for being "button bashers", and Athens was quite bad in that regard. Compared to Beijing 2008 however, it is a doddle.
Games are not meant to be easy - they are also not meant to be hard off the scale. The controls are easy enough but managing and co-ordinating them is a task in itself. For anyone who does not normally "button bash", this is a no-brainer.
Sadly I cannot give this game a good rating because the negatives are far more evident than the positives. This had the potential to be an outstanding tribute to the most outstanding sports event on the planet, and yet again it's been a let down overall. I only hope that 2012 will be better.
Surprisingly impressive August 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Due to bad reviews, i wasnt expecting much from this game but i though id give the game the benefit of the doubt.... the CRITICS R STUPID! This game is so much fun to play: feels good to break records, good challenge to learn each even, fun to play against friends, 2player online!
YOU MUST BUY THIS GAME IF U LIKE THE FUN SIDE OF GAMING!
Unfinished garbage, DONT BUY IT August 1, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Game suffers constantly from locking up and other lag related issues online. Sega have no customer service for it and probably wont be bothered to patch it. Could have been a good game, but sadly its not. Don't buy it.
Brilliant Game & Great Competition July 8, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have had this game for just under a week and like one or two of the reviews I've read, some of the game controls were at first just to difficult to get to grips with, and also I found the starting system very awkward. It takes a a fair bit of time to get used to them and once you are, well then the game falls into place very well indeed. The career/team mode is really well thought out. You can't get world records straight away with novice athletes, but as you get better and progress through the game, you improve your team and it's attributes, and it makes you think also as some attributes are far more important for some events than others (so you need to check what events are lined up for your team for the next day of competition so you can best decide which attributes to improve of your team as you only get a certain amount of points each day, which you earn by your results, to spread accross the 5 attributes which are power, speed, accuracy, agility and stamina). The online competiton is absolutely fantastic. I just wish people wouldn't quit so easily when they don't do too well in a couple of events, you don't get any good by quitting. The great thing about competing online is that you can choose from 1 event to do to all 38. There are no limits but be prepared for a very long haul if you pick all 38 events to do online (if 8 players play until the end of all events, you'll be there for a good 6 hours!! and probably more). I have gotten pretty good at this game ( I scored over 152,000 in Olympic Mode but for some reason the score didn't register online so I'll be doing that again!) and it has taken a fair bit of practice and playing. There are no bugs that I have come accross as yet, the graphics are superb, and the gameplay is very addictive. The person who rated Athens 2004 better than this needs to give this game a proper go because Beijing 2008 is just the best game of it's kind ever made.
