Amazon.co.uk Review Like Sin City before it, 300 brings Frank Miller and Lynn Varley's graphic novel vividly to life. Gerard Butler (Beowulf and Grendel, The Phantom of the Opera) radiates pure power and charisma as Leonidas, the Grecian king who leads 300 of his fellow Spartans (including David Wenham of The Lord of the Rings, Michael Fassbender, and Andrew Pleavin) into a battle against the overwhelming force of Persian invaders. Their only hope is to neutralise the numerical advantage by confronting the Persians, led by King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), at the narrow strait of Thermopylae. More engaging than Troy, the tepid and somewhat similar epic of ancient Greece, 300 is also comparable to Sin City in that the actors were shot on green screen, then added to digitally created backgrounds. The effort pays off in a strikingly stylised look and huge, sweeping battle scenes. However, it's not as to-the-letter faithful to Miller's source material as Sin City was. The plot is the same, and many of the book's images are represented just about perfectly. But some extra material has been added, including new villains (who would be considered "bosses" if this were a video game, and it often feels like one) and a political subplot involving new characters and a significantly expanded role for the Queen of Sparta (Lena Headey). While this subplot by director Zack Snyder (Dawn of the Dead) and his fellow co-writers does break up the violence, most fans would probably dismiss it as filler if it didn't involve the sexy Headey. Other viewers, of course, will be turned off by the waves of spurting blood, flying body parts, and surging testosterone. (The six-pack abs are also relentless, and the movie has more and less nudity--more female, less male--than the graphic novel.) Still, as a representation of Miller's work and as an ancient-themed action flick with a modern edge, 300 delivers. --David Horiuchi

Brilliant! July 6, 2007 27 out of 33 found this review helpful
I loved this film but didnt expect to after all the poor reviews that came out and the similar films Alexander and Troy which were quite poor really.
This was a straightforward adventure/war film. A band of 300 Spartans, with some Allies, hold the Thermopylae pass against the huge invading force of Persians, which were rumoured to be more than a Million strong. The story is of course based on the real battle of Thermopylae but naturally the directors have taken some liberties with the story but still I feel held true to the spirit of it.
The film is based on the excellent comic book/graphic novel of the same name. Much of the film work, like in the Directors previous film Sin City, has a comic book quality and feel to it. if you read the book you will see that the film is pretty faithful to the book.
It has been a controversial film especially to Iran who saw it as western propaganda but they seem to be missing a number of points; that this battle really took place when the Persian Empire invaded Greece, and more importantly that many of the characters have been made over the top to represent the issues. For example the Persian King is seen as literally a Giant, towering over everyone. This is showing he is the controller of the largest empire in the ancient world. While his cruelties and excesses represent the Persians attempt to take over and subdue Greece.
anyway, politics aside, its a great film. Watch and enjoy!
a review of the actual dvd rather than the film October 1, 2007 85 out of 111 found this review helpful
Brief note on the film first: a very stylised version of what the battle of thermopylae may have been like, adapted from a graphic novel and filmed with back projection to make it look as much as like the comic as possible. The result is really quite stunning, and the action and battle sequences very rousing. And bloody. The film is framed with one spartan telling others what happened, and thus what you are seeing is what they think it must have been like. This is a point lots of people seem to have missed.
As regards the dvd: this is a two disc edition, and the first disc contains a widescreen version of the film, with direct scene access, and a commentary from the director and two of the production staff.
The second disc has:
be one of three hundred: a brief bit with the director giving thanks to those who supported the project online.
A documentary about the battle. twenty five minutes long with contributions from historians and it's fascinating stuff.
A documentary about the spartans. Short but good.
Conversations with the creator of the graphic novel. Brief but interesting.
A short and generic production documentary.
a look at the making of the film in images. fascinating but moves very fast and be warned if you're eplipetic as the fast moving could give you a fit.
lots of short production documentaries, that are all quite interesting, and can be watched as one.
A great film.
And a very good package for it.
Couldnt get enough March 23, 2007 21 out of 27 found this review helpful
WOW what a film, even my wife enjoyed it, although i suspect for different reasons, haha. Ok lets face facts here, this movie was never ment to be at one with the history books, but has never claimed to be. The director said he was making an enjoyable movie not an accurate one. So bearing that in mind, and enjoying what the film is about... That being the 300 Spartans defending their homeland against the mass of the Persian empire was a bloody (literally) great movie. I laughed and was engrossed from start to end, and was left wanting more. effects were amazing (no surprise really it took 10 visual effects vendors, located in over three continents to create it) and was all shot on a green backdrop, because the green colour was better against the red Spartan uniforms. The acting was as you would expect from this type of movie, cool. But for me the real surprise was Gerard Butler. His version of King Leonidas had me in stitches, but also wanting to follow somewhat. His dialogue was spot on and all be it with a scottish accent delivered it all soo sweetly. My favourite line when King Xerxes tries to reason with King Leonidas to give up fighting and surrender: Xerxes: there is much our cultures could share. Leonidas: Havent you noticed? We've been sharing our culture with you all morning. PRICELESS.....
I cant wait for this on dvd. But if you only see one movie on the big screen this year, make it this one.
"First you fight with your head, then you fight with your heart!" September 23, 2007 17 out of 22 found this review helpful
When I sat down to decide which product to use for my 300th review, it did not take me long to decide; I went for the obvious choice. I am extremely happy that I did, because I found a film with a mesmerizing story of courage and facing the odds no matter how insurmountable, and some great animation to boot.
The movie is a fictionalized recount of the Battle of Thermopylae, in which three hundred Spartans battled the mighty Persian army of King Xerxes. The Spartans are known as some of the best warriors in history, and we can feel that when watching this movie. The unbelievable dexterity for wars the Spartans had was achieved by selecting those that were likely to become great soldiers and training them since their childhood to endure pain and become proficient in all types of combat. The other important element is that they believed that dying in battlefield was the greatest honor they could achieve. One of the finest examples of these mighty warriors was their king, Leonidas.
The movie starts when Xerxes is extending his dominance over the world and sends an emissary to offer Sparta the choice of surrendering and submit to the Persian's will. I am pretty sure that Xerxes did not really understand the Spartans, because the concept of submission is completely laughable for them. Thus, the conflict starts. However, the Spartans need the blessing of the Oracle to go to war, and the twisted old priests that control the Oracle have been bribed and deny Leonidas their support. The only alternative the brave king considers is to gather only three hundred of the best warriors in his clan and march to face Xerxes, arguing it is not an army but just an expedition. The fact that they were facing millions of Persians does not make them doubt their decision in the least.
I was fairly surprised by the quality of this movie, because several people whose opinion I trust described it as just a collection of war scenes. I could not disagree more. I think that there was a good development of the story before the battle starts and even after that, the film keeps going back to Sparta where political tension is brewing. This provides a breather from the violence and balances these nicely with a game of wits. Of course, there are many scenes of pure battle, which are enjoyable and the animation used in them is magnificent. Nevertheless, you can tell that the film is based on a manga, due to the nature of some of the fighting. In this aspect though it reminds me of the fights in one of the best anime productions I have seen in my life: Berserk.
I am a fan of anime, and therefore, can understand why people that do not like this genre may be a little put off by "300", even though the animation in this case is done using human figures. If you enjoy anime, I have little doubt that you will enjoy this movie, but for those that do not fall in this category and can sit through some violent scenes, I still have to say: give it a try; you may be surprised by how much you like it.
One of the best "unhollywood" movies to date November 19, 2007 25 out of 33 found this review helpful
I have studied the Spartans for educational purposes. The only grievance I would have with this film is that they made Xerxes a bit Julian Clarey due to the effeminate nature that is perceived to be part of the Persian attitude and dress at that time. When I saw this at the cinema I was not surprised to see people walk out because they thought they were going to see a hollywood epic. This is one of the best films I have seen in a long time although it falls shy in some respects to the actual story. Where they got the one eyed hump back from is to be queried and certainly does not fit with the story. Enjoyable definitely, action scenes are interesting and the overall sepia effect, very daring. Troy and Alexander were only perhaps, more watchable because of the "babe" factor concerning the lead men. If you had put some Joe Hope as the lead characters, chances are the films would have failed at the box office. 300 is slow going, but nonetheless, in my opinion an all time great. Congratulations to all involved in attempting to portray a very difficult subject and story.
