Movies based on computer games generally aren't well respected, but just because they aren't high art doesn't mean they can't be highly enjoyable. The only catch is that you need to be a fan of computer games to appreciate them. Resident Evil: Extinction is the third movie in the massively popular Resident Evil franchise, and it's probably the best one yet.

Between Resident Evil: Apocalypse and Extinction, the zombie-creating T-virus has spread far beyond the doomed Raccoon City; now the human race is almost extinct (hence the title). When a convoy of survivors meets up with the genetically-altered Alice, the shadowy Umbrella Corporation does everything in its power to take them down and reclaim her; but Alice isn't giving up without a fight...

Resident Evil: Extinction is part zombie movie, and part post-apocalyptic survival yarn. The big set pieces use CGI that doesn't look anything like reality, but does look very much like a computer game, which is possibly intentional--since this is a sequel to an adaptation, Resident Evil: Extinction does tend to assume a built-in audience which is already familiar with the various quirks of the franchise. If you're a fan of the games, you'll enjoy the various references to game characters and events; if not, you might feel a bit left out. It's not the best entry point to the franchise if you're a complete newcomer, but if you've seen the other films, it's a hell of a lot of fun. -- Sarah Dobbs

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE THE RESIDENT EVIL MOVIES   January 27, 2008

This movie was my favourite of 2007 its got a desent story behind it which is hard to find these days it's a good zombie action movie, why do people compare them to the games the are completely different, if you don't like them don't watch them it's called common sense, MILLA JOVOVICH IS SEXY WHEN SHES POWERFUL i had to say it lol.

I've got the first 2 on dvd but i just recently bought a ps3 so i've ordered the trilogy in blu ray from the u.s and let me say cannot wait to watch these babys n hd in all there glory.

Hope this review helped

Peace out!

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Cool   April 5, 2008
Although I wasn't a fan of the first two films in the series, I decided to get this because it was recommended to me by a friend. Needless to say I wasn't disappointed. If you're after a popcorn "horror" flick with a difference then this is certainly the film for you.
I placed the word horror in quotation marks for a reason. I use the word horror in the classic context of something that is genuinely menacing, intimidating and is destined to give you nightmares e.g. The first Nightmare on Elm Street. This wasn't one of those movies that really sent the shivers down your spine, but it did have its moments where you would jump out of your skin and this is obviously something that is considered horror by todays standards.

Milla Jovovich returns to the series as Alice who is now on the move through the desert because she has learned the Umbrella Corp can track her location by satellite. After the incident in Raccoon City in the previous installment the Umbrella Corporation was unable to contain the T-Virus. It quickly spread across the world drying up all the lakes and rivers and turning almost every living thing into a Zombie. The Umbrella Corporation seem to be the only organised group of humans not in a Zombified state. In an attempt to try and create a cure for what's left of humanity, Dr. Sam Isaacs is using Alice clones in an attempt to create a cure and help tame the zombies so as to create a viable work force.
All is not so sweet however as a group of roaming Raccoon City survivors lead by Claire Redfield are attacked by a huge flock of ravenous zombified crows. 5 are killed in the incident, but it could have been more if it weren't for Alice incinerating the flock by using her psionic powers which were gained from her bried imprisonment in the Umbrella facility.

Overall this is a really good film and one of those popcorn flicks that you can enjoy with your friends. Although this isn't entirely based around the game storylines it's still a good stand alone movie and if the rumours are true, I can't wait for the fourth.

5 out of 5 stars Good film or Good series   May 13, 2008
Granted it is a good film however it is by far not the best in the trilogy, still very good though.
It is that sort of film that you can just keep on watching, i have found myself just starting to watch the first resident film and ending up watching them all and still wanting to watch them all over again.
Brilliant one of the best films and trilogy i have ever seen.

I wasn't expecting much from this after the abysmal RE: Apocalypse so I was pleasantly surprised walking out that I had just seen one of the best game to film adaptations yet, not because it remains faithful to its source material (because it doesn't) but because its an adrenaline fuelled Rolla-coaster of a movie that's highly entertaining.

A few years have passed since the events of RE:A and the world has become a wasteland overrun with the undead, a small group of remaining survivors stick together in conveys trying to stay alive traversing the desert, meanwhile the few umbrella scientists still alive attempt to produce a serum to reverse the affects of the virus but to do so they require the blood of Alice, a genetic experiment who currently survives off the grid trying to help whoever she can, when the convoy is attacked she intervenes and pops into Umbrella's view to again.

The film does 'borrow' a fair bit from cult favourites Mad Max & Day of the Dead, but when the actions sequences kick into gear coming thick and fast (helmed by the director of `Highlander') you will become lost in the excitement. The standout scene without a shadow of a doubt takes place on the Vegas strip when super zombies attack the survivors, it's an assault on the senses and easily rivals any zombie action sequences from that of the action heavy dawn of the dead remake.

Due to the films fairly short running time the plot zips along as fast pace. Resi fans will be pleased to see the addition of Claire Redfield played by Ali Larter, (TV's Heroes, Final Destination) and that of infamous Tyrant.

It may be dumb and loud but its handled so slickly that you wont care the perfect popcorn movie easily the best of the three but don't expect the trilogy's loose ends to be tied up as the ending leaves it open for a fourth.

However this could well be the last live action installment in the franchise as Resident Evil Degneration is now in production (a CGI movie Final Fantasy Advent Children style)so if this brings the live action film series to a close they go out on a high

I'm not entirely sure whether I liked this because of the film itself or because it was my first experience of watching a Blu-Ray film.

I certainly think RE3 is better than the first film in the series and almost infinitely better than that "number-two" of a sequel. No longer trying to recreate the game atmosphere was a very good move although admittedly it does revert to type in the final sequence.
To be honest I found both of the previous films reasonably dull and barely cared who lived or died or if they would even escape. Somehow the whole zombie/desert/Mad Max 2 scenario gives the franchise a real adrenaline kick which it sorely needed.

The reproduction on interiors was little different to the visuals on my old upscaling DVD player but the outdoor scenes are a real testament to the power of Blu-ray. I particularly enjoyed the desert vistas, the small detail of the shifting sands blown across the dunes and the truly gob-smacking "crow scene" (Somewhat borrowed from Hitchcock but still amazingly well done)

If you're going to see one of the RE films then make it this one and preferably make it high-density if you can.
