Nice little independent Nazi Zombie movie. April 23, 2008 19 out of 23 found this review helpful
If you're tired of gigantic hollywood horrors with their formulaic plots and calculated frights, you might want to try this little movie. Set in Eastern Europe, shot in Scotland, starring Ray Stevenson and costing a little over 1 million, you might be pleasantly surprised at the quality of this movie. Genuine tension is offset with sparing gore. Great gun battles and some Nazi voodoo technology thrown in for good measure make this micro-budget effort well worth watching. There are some great characters from all over the world dying in some really creative ways and some pretty nasty baddies lurking in a pretty scary environment.
Why not bypass the hollywood dross and see how a bunch of enthusiastic Scottish film-makers do things. Great fun stuff.
A Great British horror film September 16, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is a fantastic horror film made on a shoestring budget in Scotland. Set in Eastern Europe the mixed bunch of mercenaries must go to an old Nazi outpost in a wartorn country and retrieve a secret Nazi experiment. Given the low, low 1 million budget this looks much better than it ever should and like many horrors it looks like it could shoot off a new franchise. It also has some top notch actors ... and its great to hear genuine Scottish accents (and swearing) in there too. This movie is much better than most of the over produced american pap the studios are now putting out.
A "Great British" horror movie ... give it a bash.
Very creepy - Event Horizon meets the Castle Wolfenstein October 19, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This film will appeal to you if you are a fan of science fiction, war films, horror films or all three. This film is really a mixture of them all. This film tells the story of a group of modern day wealthy backers, who have shown an interest in acquiring an item hidden in a bunker in a former Nazi outpost in Eastern Europe. They hire mercenaries from various special forces units across the world to enter the bunker, extract "the item" and then take it back to the backers.
The soldiers of fortune assume the hunt is for Nazi gold. But when they get there, they soon realise that it is not gold the backers want, but a Nazi device invented to bend time and space. This weapon, had it been prefected, could have won the war. Not long after their arrival in the bunker, the team come under attack from Nazi troops which seem to appear and vanish from nowhere, and the mental state of the special forces team rapidly deteriorates under the realisation they are fighting an army that can appear and disappear at will. Are they fighting ghosts, or the troops of the past who have been trapped in the time warp the machine's experiments created? There is another discovery the team find...
The film is very good. For those of us who remember the film "Event Horizon", there is a parallel i.e. time and space being interfered with by humans, with disastrous consequences once this space-time portal is openened. Throw in a few Nazis, and the film becomes that much more ghoulish, especially when the team uncover a newsreel in the bunker detailing how human experiments were carried out on the machine.
The film is not without its weak points. The film does have very colourful foul language - the f word is used practically every 10 seconds, and the c word even makes a few appearances. This may be more of a problem to some than others.
All in all, the film is a good one if you have a couple of hours spare, especially if you are a fan of science fiction, war films, horror films or all three.
SCARY........................................ November 6, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
A scary, fast action horror flick......A bunch or ruthless, hardened mercenaries are on a mission in Eastern Europe and come up against more than they were trained for! Made on a budget with an all male cast, this is a gem extending to only 80 minutes. The tension is non-stop and I was scared out of the little wits I have. With limited sets, and atmospheric light, the superb acting makes the whole thing seem natural and realistic. The cast is absolutely outstanding and not one single performance lack-lustre. If you can take REAL horror, then DON'T MISS THIS ONE.
Excellent low budget, old fashioned horror September 22, 2008 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
I enjoyed this. For a first outing for many of the crew it's a great example of what can be achieved when you don't have the big budgets available to more mainstream stuff. The mercenaries are a believable bunch because they are so dissimilar and, unusually, not particularly nice. DC is excellently played by Ray Stevenson who holds it all together superbly. It isn't drenched in gore like so many of these films but spaces out the nastier bits and allows the general unease to build. It's a dark film in general and the fear amongst the soldiers is palpable as they realise what is going on and that getting out is going to prove somewhat difficult. One thing I would warn about is that you need the volume up fairly high to understand what the chaps are saying - and then get completely deafened once they fire their guns! It's not a film to watch if there's a child in the bedroom up above and your remote has died - I was up and down like a yo-yo in case he thought we were being attacked. This is well worth watching if you enjoy low budget supernatural horrors which don't rely wholly on special effects and like your protagonists of the more believable variety.
