5 out of 5 stars I Liked It !!!   August 25, 2008

I really did like this film. Ive seen the original but didn't even bother think about it while watching this one. Why would i watch this one and waste my time if i'm obly watching it to compare or criticise it?

I found some bits scary and some bits not scary , just like we all do in some horror/thriller films.

If your not to sure about this film just do what i do , go on youtube and watch the trailer.

All i can say is just watch it and don't complain if you don't like it.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable horror - just the right mix!   October 21, 2008
To date, the scariest film I've seen is THE RING - it's chilling and compelling and there's something about the horror of it that stays with you for days after you've seen it. I don't tend to like watching things that are tooo scary, especially supernatural horror and when I saw the cinema trailer for THE EYE I was quite torn as it looked like a brilliant film but something that would be a nightmare for me to watch!! I'm a big Jessica Alba fan though and really wanted to see her in this role so I plucked up the courage and got it on DVD!

This film is very watchable - it's got everything: thrills, suspense, suprise, a good storyline and it IS scary. However, I can also see why hardcore horror fans would find this a bit tame. Don't let the negative reviews put you off though - I admit the film doesn't have the kind of sophistication that something like THE RING has and I did finish watching the film feeling like I wanted something a little more especially in the first half of the film which could do with having a few more spine-tingling chills & thrills. Despite this though, it is a thoroughly enjoyable film - the blind girl getting someone elses eyes (and memories) is a cool concept and the film is nicely wrapped up at the end too - a welcomed change for these Japansese horrors!

Speaking of Japanese horrors, after seeing this, I went back to watch the original and I have to say I much rather preferred the remake - it definitely made more of an impression on me as it has much better execution and Jessica Alba plays her character convincingly well. It's pretty loyal to the original but the journey is more chillingly entertaining.

Overall, this is very worthy of it's 4 stars - hardcore horror fans may be a little disappointed but I think you will love this if (like me) you tend to enjoy your thriller/horror films and like to be scared but not so scared that you can't be left in the dark by yourself!! :)

3 out of 5 stars Average remake of a Japanese horror classic   November 15, 2008

The Eye isn't actually that bad in terms of acting and visual beauty- the only reason why I knocked off 2 stars is because it just isn't scary. In my opinion, horror films should be -at least- a little bit scary. The original Japanese version was very chilling and creepy, but even though the remake mimics most of the original perfectly, it fails to frighten you on every level.

If you didn't already know, here's the premise: Jessica Alba has been blind for 20 years after suffering a bad firework accident as a child. Life is OK for her as an independent and well-off young violinist, but when she has a long-awaited corneal transplant, she begins to hear and see 'things that aren't there'.

The film has enough visual beauty to keep you entertained for the most-part, and there's always Jessica Alba on-screen as eye-candy. I'm not really a fan of blood and guts but I do like a good scare, and a total lack of any scary parts made this film -for me- admittedly quite boring and dull. Let's hope that this promising director has a few more tricks up his sleeve for his next film.

2 out of 5 stars Yet another Japanese re-make, it's time Hollywood started to think up its own ideas   October 18, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

The main problem with this film is that it has a very 'seen it all before' feel to it. The film has plenty of genuinely scary imagery and the strange apparitions Jessica Alba's character starts seeing with her new eyes provide some very haunting scenes.

But as Alba's character becomes more aware that there's something very sinister about her eyes and decides to try and unearth some answers, the film then becomes very plodding and a little tedious. Each new revelation is accompanied by an obligatory scare but there's no shocks or surprises here, it's all very production-line, with the film makers making sure they tick all the right boxes for a horror.

The trouble now is that it's getting very difficult to tell films like The Eye, The Ring, The Grudge, etc. apart from one another. This J-Horror derived formula is becoming very tired and a bit stale and it really is time for Hollywood to show a bit of courage and bring something new to the horror genre.

2 out of 5 stars seen it done much better before   November 18, 2008
I like the story, a lot. However this american version was pretty poor, I couldn't connect with Alba's character and she annoyed me!I much prefered the Japanese version which genuinely scared me. This was just so predictable, there was nothing in it which made it individual from the original version, it was just an American rip off.Don't bother with this, watch proper horror with the Japanese original and scare yourself that way.
