Based on a 2004 Thai horror flick, this surprisingly effective Hollywood remake is actually set in Tokyo. That's where newlywed hubby Joshua Jackson has taken bride Rachael Taylor (Transformers) for an ill-advised honeymoon. They hit a woman standing in the middle of a spooky road, after which all sorts of ghosts seem to emerge from Jackson's camera (he's come to Japan for a fashion-photography gig). Can our plucky heroine, a fish out of water in a confusing city, find the answer to this haunted puzzle? Well, yes, but she won't like what she finds. Shutter is distinguished by director Mayasuki Ochiai's compositional eye, which favours the empty, creeped-out spaces in which ghosts might dwell. The movie also gets into the phenomenon of "spirit photography," which suggests that the dear departed make their presence known as white flashes in snapshots. That stuff's kind of fun; unfortunately, Ochiai's ear for dialogue is as clunky as his eye is sharp, and Jackson and Taylor are saddled with some truly unfortunate exposition. The actors don't leave much of an impression either, although Megumi Okina (leading lady of Ju-on: The Grudge) is sufficiently spooky as a woman who will not be ignored. --Robert Horton, Amazon.com

How many American remakes of Japanese horrors are there? 100? Nope, maybe even 1000! Even though Shutter is actually quite a good film, it's nothing even remotely original- and when the credits role, you'll be left thinking: 'Why can't filmmakers produce anything original anymore?!?!'
That said, Shutter does manage to bring back some of the creepiness that made the 2004 original so successful. There's been a few little tweaks to the plot and there's been a bit of extra gore added for its new audience. Still though, throughout watching, you'll be haunted by the same annoying question: 'Where did the originality go?'

You've seen the Grudge, You've seen the Ring ... well you know where this movie is going.
BUT, it is an okay movie if you prepare yourself for the fact that you know where it's taking you, and it is creepy.
A newly wed couple find that after a 'Disaster' things take a weird and scary turn, ending in not quite what you expect for the couple, but exactly what you expect when it comes to the 'weird and scary'.
If you want to watch a movie that you can just take at face value, then watch this one, if you like a movie that gives you something different and doesn't let you guess the plot half way through then leave this one alone.

Shutter tells the story of a photographer who is involved in a car accident. Whilst his wife is driving down a country lane, they seemingly crash into a girl who vanishes. Soon after, they start to notice strange, white blurry images on photographs printed after the accident.
What follows is yet another generic remake of an Asian film. Whilst it is entertaining enough, there are never any real scary moments. All of the "jumps" are so obvious you see them coming a mile off. The trick of having the camera very slowly creep up behind someone, for it to lead to nothing, is also overused.
Overall, if you are a fan of these remakes, then this film is actually OK. It doesn't drag too much, and the lead actors are engaging enough. If, however you are after something that will really make you think and is a bit more original, then steer clear.

I have no issue with remakes of Asian horror movies, some can be very good such as Ring, The Grudge etc. Unfortunately Shutter does not fall into the very good category, I would class it as average to reasonably good.
The storyline has been done before in other Asian horror movies, they do like their ghosts, where as the UK or the USA seem to favour monsters or serial killers and yes this movie is about a ghost.
The story unfolds when newlyweds Ben and Jane Shaw travel to Tokyo, where Ben has taken a job as a photographer. Jane (who is driving) and Ben are travelling down a poorly lit road, Jane's attention is distracted to look at a map and when she looks back, there is a figure of a girl in the road and of course she has no chance to avoid her and hits her. The car crashes and both Ben and Jane lose consciousness. When they come round and look to see what has happened to the girl, she has mysteriously disappeared...
After that, they start to see blurry white ghostly images in photos that Ben takes and some of his friends start to die violently.
Of course the girl is taking her revenge on Ben and Jane, but Jane discovers that Ben knows more about the girl than he is letting on....
The problem with this movie is that it has all been done before. The car crash in which the dead victim disappears, the white blurry images in photos, the ghost of the girl returning to haunt the couple in various ways and the surprise ending, which is not really a surprise.
The scary moments are not really scary and have also been done before. To give you an example, at one point Jane enters an office building to try to solve the mystery. She goes up to one floor, which for some reason is a bit dark and gloomy for a modern high rise, but hey it all adds to the atmosphere and as she walks down the corridor, the ceiling lights start to crackle and turn off, I won't give away any more, but I am sure you can guess what happens next!
The cover warns that it contains scenes of gore and violence, but I would not say it is particularly gory or even that violent, it has only been given a 15 rating.
I have given this movie 3 stars because it is not that bad, it is just a shame it had to borrow so heavily from other better movies for its storyline. While obviously a remake cannot change the storyline completely, it would have been nice if some of the scary moments could have been changed to make them more original.

Not a bad littler chiller for a hollywood remake. A little predictable of course, as it is in the same ball park as Ring, The Grudge, One Missed Call etc etc, so you can sort of guess what its building up to. All in all though I found it to be quite effective. Two young newly weds move to Japan for the husband (Joshua Jackson) to pursue his career as a photographer. On the night prior to their departure to Japan however, they are driving in the woods late at night, lost and tired, they hit a girl who appears to be standing in the middle of the road. It is from this point that events start to take a sinister turn i.e strange images on the photos, haunting visions of the girl they hit, eerie noises and people being killed off one by one in sinister circumstances. As I said its all been done before in similar films but on the whole I found this to be quite a good, solid eerie story, and with the odd jump here and there thrown in. Not brilliant, but not bad at all.
