Amazon.co.uk Review Taste the Blood of Dracula is one of the best of Christopher Lee's Dracula series for Hammer. A group of businessmen who, out of sight of their families, like nothing more than to frequent brothels and generally behave in sensation-seeking ways, are persuaded by Dracula's servant (a splendidly manic Ralph Bates) that summoning up the orthodontically-challenged aristocrat would be the ultimate thrill. They warily agree, purchasing relics for the necessary ritual from a shifty dealer (Roy Kinnear--who else?), but panic halfway through the proceedings and decide to kick their initiator to death instead. Unfortunately, it's too late, and Dracula materialises as they make good their escape, swearing to avenge the murder of his servant. While the subsequent descent into paranoia by the three villains-Dracula himself hardly counts in comparison with this odious bunch--isn't exactly the stuff of Rosemary's Baby, it still infuses the plot with an element of psychodrama that is unusual for a Hammer fang-fest. There are strong performances pretty much all round, but Peter "Clegg" Sallis quakes exceptionally nicely as one of the trio of miscreants. The sets, props and costumes are of an unusually high order, too. --Roger Thomas

An Excellent Hammer Horror December 20, 2006 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is my favourite of Hammer's Dracula series. The story concerns three Victorian thrill seekers who looking for greater and greater excitement are persuaded by fellow degenerate Lord Courtley(Ralph Bates, excellent as usual) to participate in a satanic ritual in an abandoned Church. This is where things start to go wrong as Courtley goes into a seizure and is battered to death by the unpleasant trio, his blood resurrecting Dracula. The children of these men are then used by the Count as an instrument of revenge. The film is very stylish and in some ways the real monsters of the film are the three so called Gentlemen, who pursue their seedy secret life by night. Christopher Lee is given little to do, but is still a commanding presence, and there is strong support from Geoffrey Keen,Peter Sallis, John Carson,Linda Hayden and Gwen Watford
Taste the Blood of Hammer!! July 16, 2004 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Taste the Blood of Dracula is another great film from the House of Hammer. This DVD is the uncut version, which includes the brothel scenes, the killing of Lord Courtley. The film begins with Roy Kinnear, a salesman on a carriage ride trying to sell an item to 2 odd looking men,he gets thrown off the carriage, witneses the killing of Dracula (Christopher Lee). Three Victorian gentlemen who keep respectability in front of their families are drawn in to Dracula's resurrection courtesy of Lord Courtley(Ralph Bates). In a disused church, Dracula is brought back to life by the blood of Courtley & seeks revenge on them & their families, who destroyed him. Although Christopher Lee has a very small part in the film, this is still a good film by Hammer Studio's.There are great supporting roles for Linda Hayden, Isla Blair & Anthony Corlan. The DVD's only extra features is a trailer & scene selection which is a shame but at least it is the uncut version. The picture quality is also an improvement. Worth buying!
The Last Dracula Made Worth Seeing June 11, 2005 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Made as a follow up to Dracula Has Risen From The Grave, it does work rather well. Set in Victorian London, a group of business men who have become rather bored with their way of life are tempted to explore the world of darkness. They get more than they bargain for when Dracula is resurrected and sets about his vengeance when his servant (Ralp Bates) is murdered by the three businessmen. Its a good story helped along by its gothic atmosphere and good sets. Good to see the lovely Linda Hayden in this, her career never really took off which was a shame for she was a decent actress who more often than not ended up in low budget flicks which did little for her career. Dracula (Christopher Lee, who else?) says very little during the film, but his presence adds menace throughout. The supporting cast are good too, Peter Sallis; Geoffrey Keen and Gwen Watford just to name a few. It was sadly, the last film made in the Dracula series which is of any merit, so am sure Hammer fans would add this to their collection. Good sound and picture and can be bought for a good price too.
Taste the blood of Hammer July 9, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Christopher Lee's and Hammer's 4th Dracula outing. A group of supposedly respectable gentlemen looking for new thrills because their current secret debauchery bores them, get involved with Satan ritualism to summon up the Devil, or in this case Count Dracula. The review below from back in 2000 is innacurate as it is referring to the VHS version, it states it is a cut version, whilst this DVD version is 'uncut' and features the nudity and dancing in the brothel; a full 3 mins extra over the old VHS version, the DVD also features a theatrical trailer. All in all a decent vampire film for its day, but not Hammer's nor Lee's best Dracula film.
The last decent film in Hammer's Dracula series July 27, 2004 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
"Taste the Blood of Dracula" begins with the conclusion of "Dracula Has Risen from the Grave," as a traveling salesman makes off with the count's cape, ring and some of his blood. Figuring these mementoes will be worth something, the salesman returns to England. A few years later we find three decadent London gentlemen--William Hargrove (Geoffrey Keen), Samuel Paxton (Peter Sallis), and Jonathan Secker (John Carson)--who spend their nights drinking and whoring in the East End under the guise of "charity work." The trio have become bored with their indulgences and then have the misfortune of encountering Lord Courtley (Ralph Bates), who comes up with the bright idea of bringing Dracula back to life for fun. The three purchase the relics the salesman brought over from Transylvania but freak out during the magic ritual that involves drinking the potion made from Dracula's blood (one thing you have to say for Hammer films, the titles usually come into play at some point in the narrative). The trio beat up Courtley and flee, but the potion transforms the Lord into the Count (Christopher Lee). Dracula immediately decides Courtley is worthy of revenge and goes after the three men through their children, whereupon much blood-letting ensues. This is yet another one of Hammer's Dracula films where it ends up being less about the title character and more about what the director is up to. Unlike those films in the series directed by Terence Fisher, who had great affection for the 19th-century, director Peter Sasdy is more interested in seeing the Victorians as hypocrites who basically get what they deserve in the end. "Taste the Blood of Dracula" not only lacks the strong moral counter-presence of a Van Helsing type, it lacks a true hero. Dracula again meets his fate at the end of the film because that is what is supposed to happen, not because we have any vested interest in the boy rescuing the girl. Dracula is clearly an erotic figure whose seduction of the children of the Victorian debauchers heralds their sexual awakenings (e.g., Linda Hayden as Alice Hargood laying sensuously on the lid of Dracula's sarcophagus). For those of you looking for Freudian overtones, look no further, because things get pretty blatant in this film. "Taste the Blood of Dracula" is the last decent film in the Hammer Dracula series, so if you are working through the series in order, you might consider stopping here.
