They're coming back to life, they're everywhere!!!!!! June 9, 2005 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
How many times have I seen this film? I dont know. Lucio Fulci has long been one of my favourite directors. His ability to ignore narrative and just go for your throat can at times be so claustrophobic and overwhelming, you wonder why Italy (or for that matter, the world) doesnt produce directors like him anymore! Along with Argento, he is simply a master of his art, Zombie being his first attempt at Romero style gutmunching, and the results are seriously good!Firstly, this film is scarier than Dawn of the Dead, the zombies are far superior, they look just like you expect the undead to look. the gore (especially the eyeball scewering and throat ripping) is believable and the music is just plain haunting. Oh, and how many Hollywood films have an underwater fight between a zombie and a REAL shark?! Not many. Acting wise, Ian McCulloch and Richard Johnson (particularly) are perfect for their roles. Johnson is superb! Tisa Farrow (Mia's sister) is not so good and just looks confused throughout. This film may have recieved bad reviews in the past, and rightly so if you are watching the cut, pan and scan print from Vipco, but in glorious widescreen, the colours come to life and the cinematography is very clever. I must say it took a couple of viewings, but it really grew on me, especially the full uncut anchor bay region 0 dvd. Anyhow, its all a matter of taste (or lack of) but i Love this movie, its always one of the first I show anyone who isnt familiar with the Horror genre, and they always love it! Also, check out House by the Cemetery and The Beyond. Both Lucio Fulci masterpieces. Ignore the dubbing and you'll be fine.

ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS July 19, 2003 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is work of a masterpiece, its not like the traditional zombie films wheras they get trapped inside a house its more of an adventure type film where they have to find an escape route from the island because it's getting infested with zombies that come up from the ground. TIME IS RUNNING OUT, AH, I'M BITTEN!!
ZOMBIE FLESH EATING GOODNESS April 3, 2006 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
In my eyes, Lucio Fulci will always be a master of the zombie movies. His films are mind bendingly grotesque in every way, and while he revels in the gore and is outrageously exploitive, he still knows how to make one hell of a scary film. That is why Zombie Flesh Eaters is one of my favorite zombie films of all time. It combines two elements perfectly (exploitation and scares), so it has that general horror film appeal that is lacking in today's cinema. It's very sick, brutal and nihilistic but the way it is portrayed makes it something other than ordinary, run of the mill gore show that the zombie and cannibal crazes of the 80s spawned numerous times. At the same time, its a very overdrawn and exploitive film, but the scenes of blood and guts are not without their own share of intense fear. Fulci didn't simply rely on shocking and sickening displays to keep your interest. Instead he combines those displays with genuine terror that is amplified by an atmosphere of claustrophobia and dread, so not only will gore hounds love the film through and through but it will keep thriller enthusiasts on the edge of their seats.
A boat as floated into New York Harbour, apparently abandoned, and risks of crashing into every other ship in the bay. When the Coast Guard's board the ship they get more than they expected, with maggot infestions, severed hands and a zombie that breaks out of the closet and kills one of them. A young woman named Anne Bowles finally claims the ship, it belongs to her missing father. At the same time journalist Peter West is looking for a good story. Their paths cross when they both investigate the rig then decide to both sail down to Matul, a tropical island that was Anne's father's last known whereabouts, to find out whats going on. Once in the tropics, the two enlist the help of two lovers, Brian and Susan, to take the to Matul. Naturally there are rumours of some strange going ons on the island, and they want to steer clear. A little money helps them make up their mind and off they go. When they finally reach Matul they meet Dr. Menard, who lives on the island with his hysterical wife. Mrs Menard isn't hysterical without a reason. Her husband is trying to find the cause and cure of some strange events on the island: an outbreak of the undead. To make matters worse, the zombie were only on the far side of the island, but now they are being sighted in the village.
Like George A. Romero's Dawn Of The Dead (and most other zombie films of this era), Fulci sticks with slow moving zombies that can be outrun if you move fast enough. It's separated from the rest, however, in how well they are portrayed physically and visibly. They don't just fall over when you give then the slightest of shoves. They come after you, attack you. If there is an obstacle they get rid of it. The zombies in Dawn Of The Dead were too easy to get around and live your life. Here however, the antagonists are so much more brutal in their ways of trying to get you that there's justification for that feeling of dread growing in your stomach. Its also justification for caring for the group of survivors, despite limited character development. The background of the events is given, but not for the characters. We know nothing about why Dr. Menard is on the island or why Anne's father was there, but we still feel the doctor's frustration, sadness and dispair as everyone around him falls victim to this plague. The fact that his friends are coming back to kill him I think is the most haunting of all.
Zombie Flesh Eaters does make some questionable mistakes, however, as most low budget films do. Most of the women in the film simply stand there and scream as zombies approach them, which is frustrating. The acting can be questionable at times, but I think its pretty good compared to some other dub jobs. Other then that the flaws are merely superficial compared to all other horror it brings to the table. With blood and gore there is certainly no shortage and some scenes I thought were too over the top. It also has some of the most awesome scenes in horror film history, with a zombie vs. shark battle, and the climatic showdown at the end of the movie is my favorite part of the film. The cinematography is excellent, as it uses the beautiful scenery to his advantage. This is indeed a Lucio Fulci masterpiece. Despite a somewhat slow start, its a thrill a minute zombie slaughtering, eye popping (literally) horror show. Enjoy it and please take this as a recommendation.
Thank you for reading my review.
an excellent zombie film June 29, 2000 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
dont listen to the other reviews, this is a notorious and all time classic film from the godfather of gore, Lucio Fulci. Yes, we all know it was a cash in on Dawn of the Deads success but Fulci did a wonderful job creating an atmospheric film with bucket loads of gore of the tomato sauce, spaghetti and meatballs variety, and scenes such as the zombie vs shark and eye splinter are amazing. A must for anyone into cult horror. BUY IT NOW !
