When you start to watch this movie, it's good to know that it's a collaborative project from three directors (this may help).
In my opinion, it works as a horror, it works as a black comedy and at some points even a romance. Although I even "pah" at myself for saying that.
It's a nice new spin on an "end of the world" type movie, and it's good to see a horror movie with a shred of originality in it's grisly veins.
But hey, that's just my opinion.

The trailer and promo work for The Signal suggested an original, fast paced horror flick, and the spattering of top critical reviews hinted that the idea had come off. Alas, I didn't find anything original at all in the end product.
Having three directors each do a segment is nothing new, and considering the first and third acts are very similar in tone, while the middle segment could (probably should) be from a completely different movie, the idea comes across as a malfunctioning gimmick.
The first and last segments come across as standard 28 Days Later / Dawn of the Dead style horror knock offs while the second segment comes across as the Harvey Keitel section of Pulp Fiction reworked with a horror twist.
The film looks great (suggesting the directors will do more with more complete scripts and bigger budgets), and the DVD is packed full of extras but really, there's nothing here you haven't seen done better before. My final thoughts were that this was a marketing and advertising idea made into a film.

So. Is this a horror movie, a black comedy or a drama? Answer: none of the above. It's a mess.
What is wrong with the critics that they rated this highly?
