Not as bad as everyone says. July 24, 2008 I dont know why everyone slags this movie so much. It aint a remake of Romero's movie, but it does reference it quite a lot. All in all its an entertaining zombie movie. Plenty of action and gore. You read good reviews on zombie movies that are truely afawful, so why this one get such a hard time I dont know. Also, its the same guy who did Friday 13th Part 2 and Halloween:H2O. If you do decide to buy it, buy this one cos the cover is in 3D and looks well cool!Day of the Dead [2007]
Travesty to see one of Romero's classic titles treated in this manner May 29, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I honestly don't want to waste my time with this but I too have watched this film. I do enjoy George Romero zombie flicks and after watching this I thought this was a joke. More disappointed actually cause all I got was some rookie director coming up with a 'remake' of one of the master's well known title and jacking it all up. A rookie in the sense of trying to capture the dark, gritty, viciousness of the zombie epidemic as envisioned by Romero in his earlier films. Steve Miner has directed episodes of Dawson's Creek, (which explains some of this film's truly boring dialog and Ken and Barbie type characters) and Smallville (which has effectively turned Superman into a soap opera). What Miner has done here is show us that he can capture all of the plot lines, and zombie behavior previously shown in a dozen zombie flicks, put Mena Suvari (of American Beauty) in the lead and make a horrible horror movie.
While this film might appeal to young folks who don't understand the art as developed by Romero, those who do will undoubtedly turn away from this one after the first half hour. It only takes that long to get an idea of the poor characters. Suvari plays an army Corporal (who carries a gun with no bullets. Why even pull it out?) Ving Rhames has a small part, perhaps wise enough to not stick around. Suvari's character is remarkably calm in the face of danger despite her seemingly bad decision making. The rest of the cast are like refugees from a Dawson's Creek episode. Nick Cannon (Mariah Cary's husband) plays the part of the bad a.., machismo Army Private, and while not giving a particularly good performance, due in part to the horrible script, Cannon does manage to bring some charisma and toughness to the character.
The zombies seem to do extraordinary things one moment (like crawl on ceilings and run real fast-like the Dawn of the Dead remake), but when it comes to attacking the lead actors they seem inept. This picture doesn't do any justice to the zombie film genre. It ranks down there with the very low budget. The title was used to possibly draw attention to it's existence, nothing more.
Good Zombie horror ignore moaners!! May 5, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
If like me you love all things Zombie then this version of Day of the Dead 2007 is worth watching. It is not a follow on from Dawn of the Dead 2004 and in my opinion is not as good as it either, even though Ving Rhames stars in it (briefly), but it is still well worth watching and you should ingnore all the moaners who be-little everything that is not G.Romereo, the god of the zombie genre (although his latest offering Diary of the Dead was disapointing). The Zombies are a little different than the norm but I think they work well, if you like zombie films then you have probably seen some real stinkers, this is not one of them, give it a go.
Not that bad, but gutted its nothing like the Dawn remake !! March 30, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Big fan of the original trilogy and the Night and Dawn remakes. Dawn of the Dead remake was great IMO and the story, acting and new speed zombies were really good. This new Day remake has the super fast zombies and they even run along the celling a la Alien and exorcist 3. They also have the army and a zombie called Bud, just as the 1986 movie. This however is no way as good as the original and bears little to the original. The problem is this story is a cross between 28Days later and Day of the Dead (orig). Its a virus not rising dead! Mena Suvari was really good and was easy to see she was the a-list (although she's probably not that) compared to the rest of the cast. I give this 3 stars as I'm a fan of zombie horrors and although this isn't like the original or the recent Dawn remake, it was still enjoyable to watch. I have the special edition and the extras are also pretty good.
Absolutley awful and very mis-leading March 25, 2008 14 out of 16 found this review helpful
***Be warned before buying this DVD - 'Day of the Dead (2007)' isn't a remake of the classic George A Romero movie***
I generally quite enjoy zombie movies with the Romero" Dead" movies, the Evil Deads and the 28 Days/Weeks Later movies being amongst my favourites, and not having read the reviews here (my mistake!) I was fooled into believing that this was a remake of the classic 80's movie with the same name, but I was wrong. What we have here is Hollywood big names Ving Rhames, Mena Suvari, among a cast of nobodies, some pretty bad special effects and a very unoriginal and uninspired storyline, resulting in a very bad, straight to DVD movie that is so poor it gets to the point where it is completely unwatchable.
The story is basically a small town gets infected and turns it's residents into flesh eating zombies. These are not your usual slow-moving, low responsive zombies though - these guys can run (something seen fairly commonly in zombie movies in recent years), jump, even crawl along the walls and ceilings! Rhames and Suvari are army generals to a non-existant army (where are they?!) that are trying to stop people leaving or entering the town and once Suvari has to take her sick and infected mother to the hospital, that is where all hell breaks loose.
Overall this is a low budget and low intelligence horror movie that should be avoided no matter what! There is absolutley nothing about this movie that would make me recommend this awful piece of rubbish to anyone.
