Amazon.co.uk Review A by-the-numbers haunted house movie, albeit one with some neat twists, a couple of good performances and impressive design work, Thirteen Ghosts is a remake of the 1960 original by exploitation superstar William Castle. When ghost-hunter Cyrus (F Murray Abraham) dies his quietly decent widower nephew Arthur (Tony Shaloub) inherits his house. With almost infinite predictability, he, his teenage daughter (Shannon Elizabeth) and young son, as well as a rival ghost-hunter and Cyrus' untrustworthy tame psychic (Mathew Lillard), are trapped in the house, which is a glass labyrinth of sliding panels and shifting staircases. As the woman ghost-hunter Kalina helpfully explains, the house is "a machine designed by the devil and powered by the dead"--specifically by 12 ghosts, most of them murderously malevolent. Shaloub and Lillard manage to make us care about this farrago and Abraham lends his few scenes his usual malignant authority, but the real star is the inventively designed house itself and the outrageous horror-comic makeup of the ghosts. This is a knowingly trashy film enjoyable on its own level. On the DVD: Thirteen Ghosts comes with a short textual explanation of who Castle was and why he should get this sort of homage, a self-congratulatory making-of documentary and filmographies for cast and crew, as well as odd short featurettes explaining the imagined back-story for each of the ghosts. The disc has Dolby sound and is presented in a 1.85:1 widescreen ratio.--Roz Kaveney

Everything a good horror movie should be + some more! August 3, 2002 14 out of 16 found this review helpful
I purchased this DVD without knowing anything about it, all i knew was that it was going too be scarey. When i got it, i peered at the back of the case and thought that it looked a bit cheap, and tacky. Then i put it into my dvd player and my views changed. The moment the animated menu appears, you know this film is going to be a stunner. As for the story itself, it starts of with an action scene, then the real story begins, the ways the viewer is told information is simply spectacular. The way people die in the film is also amazing, never been done before. As for the 13 ghosts, well most of them are utterly terrifying although one or two are slightly unrealistic. Well BUY THIS DVD if you like to be scared, i do. Ive watched it 3 times and i only got it this morning. Its much better than House On Haunted Hill and not a long as The Others which makes this film a must have for any "Scarey Movie" fan, YOU WONT BE DISSAPOINTED!! CLICK ON ADD TO BASKET, YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO!!
Better than most reviews suggest September 29, 2006 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I cant belive that so many reviewers (especially the most recent) have only given this movie one or two stars. It is a very good modern horror movie that manages to combine horror genres, mainly ghost/spooks and slasher. It has plenty of suspence and is actually quite gorey, which makes a change when compared to most 15 certificate modern horror movies.
The storyline is origional and the effects are very good. The house with the "Th13teen Ghosts" is made almost completely of glass inc. walls, floors, ceilings and it is very technical with all sorts of strange machanical devices for opening and closing certain sections of the house and the movie manages to pull this off very well without making any mistakes or making it look cheesy. This adds to the suspence of the movie. The ghosts themsleves are pretty creepy and about three of them are downright terriying!
Don't listen to bad reviews, give this movie the chance it deserves and you will be please you did.
A TOUR DE FORCE OF HORROR July 23, 2002 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Forget the knockers who say this film is rubbish,'13 ghosts' is one of the best horror movies for years. The pace is quick and furious, unlike 'The Haunting', which was slow paced, this film really kicks. You really have to keep your eyes on the screen,it's so easy to miss certain things. All in all,the style and pace of this film and it's fantastic jaw dropping effects, will have some of you reaching for the good old cushion to hide behind. I have watched horror movies for 40 years, this is one of the best.If you have 5:1 sound, you will be drawn further into the horror!.Get it now.
Thir13en Ghosts - HIT January 30, 2003 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
Thir13en Ghosts is a fantastic movie and I would highly recommend it to anyone considering buying it. You watch the film the first time and maybe find it scary then you must watch the featurette on the DVD it explains about the ghosts then watch the film again. This will give you a better understanding of the plot and you will find you can enjoy the film abit more. The special effects are great and the house is made really well. Watch it guys its wicked. Matthew Lillard is fantastic as a paranoid overreacting psycic.
One of the best ghost films I've seen January 5, 2007 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Great ghost film, one of the best ones I've seen for ages.
Following ghost story tradition, there are sudden brief flashes of various nasty looking ghosts which made me jump the first time I saw them. A fairly simply plot which is explained well by the characters as they try to stay alive. Possibly a bit gory for a 15 certificate but definately something I'll be saving to watch again. Early on, before they'd worked out how to see the ghosts, I almost felt like yelling at them as they walked right up to the things, completely oblivious.
Being a bit of a techie, I loved the house. Full of sliding glass and metal panels (driven by a massive frightening looking load of gears - imagine looking into a gearbox created by a madman) opening and closing to reveal and block corridors all under some strange control.
Along with all the screaming and running around, they find time for some humour as well.
All in all, I really enjoyed this one.
